These are the 50s albums that I've rated 4 stars or more:

1. Harry Belafonte - Calypso (1956)
2. Chuck Berry - After School Session (1957)
3. Buddy Holly - Buddy Holly (1958)
4. Buddy Holly and the Crickets - The "Chirping" Crickets (1957)
5. Ricky Nelson - Ricky Sings Again (1959)
6. Moondog - Moondog and His Friends (1953)
7. Blind Blake - A Second Album of Bahamian Songs (1952)
8. The Everly Brothers - Songs Our Daddy Taught Us (1958)
9. The Everly Brothers - The Everly Brothers (They're Off and Rolling) (1957)
10. Little Richard - Here's Little Richard (1957)
11. Chuck Berry - One Dozen Berrys (1958)

Edit: Oh no I didn't remember that pre-50s albums are included in the same poll too. I've been listening 50s albums only this month. I hope my list is okay still. Before I have listened to some pre-50s albums, but none of them I've rated 4 stars.

Hi, luney6. Could you post the performance/recording year for these albums? For the albums, we're only including albums that were released before 1960, so certain performances may not be eligible. I apologize if I didn't post this in a place that is easy to find. (I've made so many rules and created so many threads devoted to this poll that I can't remember when/where I said what.) :?
I did try to make sure that all of these were composed between 1900 and 1959, but I only gave the release date of each a cursory glance, so any mistakes would be my fault. I'm editing the original post right now, but a lot of these pieces seem to have fairly ambiguous composition dates. Does anyone know where to get reliable data for that?

I hope I haven't confused anyone, but what I think we're going on for the albums is the release date of the album itself, and not the composition year. Some of these performances may not have been actually recorded until after 1960, while others may have had multiple albums recorded before 1960. When I get home from work tonight, I'll try to find and quote the conversation we had on this subject, but I pasted an example from bonnielaurel's list below. Please let me know if this makes sense.

10. Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York/Bruno Walter - Symphony No. 5 [Mahler] (1947)

Huh. OK. Sorry, my bad. And the same goes for the songs, then?

This is a little confusing though, considering that the release dates for many of these are hard to find and not official.

It definitely is confusing. As I said, I'll find the thread that explained all of this after work (I'm at lunch now) and post this evening. Hopefully, it will clarify. For now, here are the original rules to the best of my memory (and please correct me anyone if you disagree):

Songs 1900-1949: Release date for pop songs; performed dates for classical "pieces," since many were not recorded until much later. All versions of songs will be combined.
Songs 1950-1959: Release date. Since most of these are not "many times recorded" standards, versions will not be combined from different artists.
Albums: Release date of specific albums. In this case, classical symphonies, etc. are included, but it needs to be a specified album/performance released before 1960.

Hopefully, this makes sense. Since I think I've managed to confuse even myself, I'll get back to work and hope the earlier rules I posted are a little more clear when I find them...

Ah, no matter jamieW. As you've extended the deadline by a week, it'll be convenient enough for me to edit and submit my lists, all within time, with a little more clarity in my knowledge of the rules. Thanks.

Thanks for your understanding, luney6. I definitely don't want to confuse or make this difficult for anyone - I really appreciate each and every vote. I did find the information I was looking for from the other thread. It turns out sonofsamiam explained it much better than I ever have. I've copied his quote below:
sonofsamiam wrote:I like that idea of a 50s and a 1900-1949 poll, at least for songs; albums should probably be blended as it is SO '50s heavy.

Also, for the songs of '00-'49, we solved a lot of problems then in two ways, since the idea of the recording and the song were fairly different then:

1. Count all the votes for the song itself, rather than the recording artist (that can apply to both various versions of classical recordings, as well as standards, which can have many different singers). The key is the song needs to have been written in that time period.

2. For classical, vote for movements / arias rather than entire works.

If you look at the old '00-'49 results, it worked out great.

For the albums list, I guess classical recordings could be included, but with the caveat that the recording be from the pre-1960 time period, and the composition from post-1899.

Does any of the above make sense?

One more thing: there might be a small "adjustment period" for the lists once the deadline has come and gone and I'm finishing up the spreadsheet. For now, my focus has been on entering data/organizing the spreadsheet with just "tentative" release dates per the submitter. Once I research this a little more thoroughly, I'd like to give everyone a chance to adjust their lists should a song/album be deemed ineligible. (For example, I haven't yet heard from bonnielaurel regarding "This Land Is Your Land" in the 1950's songs. I'll probably send her a PM soon.) I'll alert people as soon as I stumble upon these.

Sorry to bother you again, Romain, but is there an earlier version of this song performed by Ella & Louis that I don't know about? The earliest I can find is their 1956 album together, which would mean this would be eligible for the 1950's poll. I think what can be confusing is we're voting for standards in the 1900-1949 poll, but if you prefer a version of a standard that was recorded 1950-59, you can vote for that in the '50's portion. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Merde, I have not been serious enough in the selection. I have Cheek to Cheek (it's the same song) by Fred Astaire after (#44). I love so much Ella and Louis that I wanted to put them everywhere :D
I change (again) my list in the original post.
Thousand of sorry.

Yes, I do mind, but I'll move it anyway. It's unfortunate that such a famous song has the wrong date on RYM and on this website, but 1944 must be right.

EDIT: It's now at #54 in my 1900-1949 song list and out of my 1950-1959 list.

Thanks so much, Romain and bonnielaurel. I'll admit that this has been a little more challenging than I thought, and the main reason is that so many of these songs have vague/conflicting release date information. Fortunately, I have Honorio's research from the previous poll to depend upon, which will make my job a lot easier once I begin finalizing these dates in the spreadsheet!

Miguel, I plan on moving everything from #58 on your list up a notch, since we're combining different versions in the 1900-49 poll and I can only count the highest ranked version on each list. Did you want to add a song at #100?

Thanks, nicolas. I will add your songs lists from the previous poll, as requested. Happy Halloween!

Note: I am so pleased with the turnout so far that (unless people feel otherwise) I no longer think it will be necessary to automatically include all of the lists from the old poll. If, however, anyone who participated in that poll doesn't have time to participate and would like for me to include their old lists (like nicolas), I'll be happy to. Just please let me know...

I certainly can! (And you're actually early since I extended the deadline to November 5th.)

Actually, this will be a good time to update the timeline for this...

November 6th, end of day: Last day for submissions. (Yes, I know, this means I'm extending the deadline one more day, but I wanted to give everyone - including myself - an entire weekend to submit any last second lists.)

November 7-13: I will complete the spreadsheet during this week and check for any errors.

November 14: Will send the completed spreadsheet along to DaveC for the presentation.

Please let me know if anyone has any questions.

So please, if you can, don't take my albums list, because I"m listening to Masterpieces by Ellington and it deserves its name !!
I might post another list before the 6th (but just one, sorry :( ) Thanks in advance !!!

1950-1959 Songs

I'm not going to include this time the rankings in my all-time list, basically because I don't agree anymore with those rankings (I did that list in 2007 and it's in a bad need of an update). So…

1. ELVIS PRESLEY, SCOTTY and BILL "Mystery Train" (1955)
At 1'46" Elvis jumps right in and begins to sing the melody a little too early. Any other producer could have insisted in recording another take. But not Sam Phillips. The important thing for Phillips (and for Elvis!) was not the perfection, it was the spontaneity, the feeling, the uniqueness, they aimed to capture the moment. That's how they invented Rock & Roll. No less.

2. CHUCK BERRY "Johnny B. Goode" (1958)
Chuck Berry hit the target accurately and wrote an everlasting Rock & Roll anthem from an almost autobiographical rags-to-riches story. But with one big difference. Berry "could play the guitar just like a ringin' a bell" also, but while Johnny B. Goode "never ever learned to read or write so well" Chuck Berry was one of the best writers of Rock 'n' Roll lyrics ever. Period.

3. CARL PERKINS "Blue Suede Shoes" (1956)
Rockabilly. "Country musicians playing their own version of uptempo Rhythm & Blues music" according to RYM. This sound with "driving guitars, frantic vocals and slap-back echo in the bass" originated at Sam Phillips' Sun Studios and was going to define the 1950s sound in the long run. Carl Perkins' signature tune (and Elvis' "Mystery Train") are for me the peaks of the style.

4. GEORGES BRASSENS "La mauvaise réputation" (1952)
Protest songs can be funny. Brassens wrote a semi-autobiographical song with "La mauvaise réputation" ("Bad Reputation") about growing up in a little village feeling different to other people. And he made it his signature piece, an humorous anarchist chant. Good folks don't like it if you take a different road than they do. Except the mute, armless, legless and blind.

5. HANK WILLIAMS & HIS DRIFTING COWBOYS "Long Gone Lonesome Blues" (1950)
So lonesome he could cry. Almost every root style made art from sorrow and pain, the best examples could be Blues and Flamenco but also Tango or Bolero. And Country, of course, with Hank Williams showcasing his command on yodeling and painting the perfect portrait of loneliness and despair, just like his own death on the back seat of a Cadillac. Alone. And blue.

6. DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET "Take Five" (1959)
Despite being played a billion times as background music in cafés (and elevators and dentist offices) the song hasn't lost any ounce of its greatness, of its natural sophistication (if I'm allowed to put together those antagonistic words). Probably it's because it creates an easy mood not being at the core easy at all, it simultaneously stimulates and relaxes your brain.

7. GERRY MULLIGAN QUARTET "My Funny Valentine" (1953)
This version is usually (and wrongly) credited to Chet Baker. But, unfairly enough, Mulligan's part is for me the highlight of the track. The Quartet had no piano or guitar so the harmonic counterpoint relied on Mulligan's baritone sax, playing heavenly harmonies intertwining with the trumpet and not abandoning a humble background till his own solemn and brief solo at 2:01.

8. LOUIS ARMSTRONG & ELLA FITZGERALD with SY OLIVER AND HIS ORCHESTRA "Dream a Little Dream of Me" (1950)
Just the first 15 seconds (a few notes of Armstrong trumpet and a brief scat by Fitzgerald) are enough to know that this is something exceptional, with a prodigious chemistry between Ella and Louis. To be filed along with my two favourite duets, the joyful "Aguas de Março" (Tom Jobim and Elis Regina) and the gloomy "Travellin' Light" (Tindersticks with Carla Torgeson).

9. JACQUES BREL avec FRANÇOIS RAUDER ET SON ORCHESTRE "Ne me quitte pas" (1959)
It's impossible to write a deeper and more desperate plea for love. It's impossible to go as high as these unreachable promises ("I'll offer you rain pearls coming from countries where it never rains") and as low as this pitiful humiliation ("Let me become (…) the shadow of your dog"). And it's impossible to perform it with more passion and emotional involvement. Don't leave him.

10. NINA SIMONE "My Baby Just Cares for Me" (1958)
The great success of this song in the mid-80s, almost 30 years after it came out, can be explained (apart by the funny video-clip) because great music is always timeless, because styles are less important that substance. Nina Simone always jumped easily between styles, between Jazz, Blues, Soul, Gospel, Pop and Classical. And boarding all of them with... style.

11. FRANK SINATRA "I've Got You Under My Skin" (1956)
Legend says that the musicians stood up and applauded after playing for the first time the arrangement that Nelson Riddle did for the immortal Cole Porter tune. Understandable, they've just recorded probably the best arrangement for a Big Band ever.

12. SARAH VAUGHAN "Lullaby of Birdland" (1955)
Probably the best melody line ever (well, along with "Moon River" and "Fly me to the Moon") enhanced by solos of the whole Clifford Brown band and by the otherworldly vocal performance of Sarah Vaughan, including an outstanding scat part.

13. ELIZETE CARDOSO & LUIZ BONFÁ "Manhã de carnaval" (1959)
Another immortal melody line. Written by Luiz Bonfá, included on the "Orfeu Negro" soundtrack at the last moment becaming the main title, sung by Orfeu (Agostinho dos Santos) and Eurydice (Elizete Cardoso). My favourite? Eurydice's, of course.

14. ELVIS PRESLEY "Trouble" (1958)
When Elvis was the King Creole. With a vibrant arrangement of New Orleans Dixieland Jazz Elvis delivers a rowdy, arrogant and bully Leiber-Stoller original that ends being pure Rock 'n' Roll. If you're looking for trouble you came to the right place.

15. DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH "Symphony No. 10 in E Minor: III. Allegretto" (1953)
The third movement of the Symphony No. 10 is a personal reaffirmation of the composer after the Stalinism and his 1948 denunciation, using the famous DSCH-motif (the composer's initials, Dmitri Schostakovich) over a waltz rhythm pattern.

16. ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST (LARRY KERT & CAROL LAWRENCE) "Somewhere (Ballet)" (1957)
17. LOTTE LENYA "Moritat vom Mackie Messer" (1955)
18. ELLA FITZGERALD & LOUIS ARMSTRONG "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" (1957)

Miguel, I plan on moving everything from #58 on your list up a notch, since we're combining different versions in the 1900-49 poll and I can only count the highest ranked version on each list. Did you want to add a song at #100?
Ok, jamieW:

So please, if you can, don't take my albums list, because I"m listening to Masterpieces by Ellington and it deserves its name !!
I might post another list before the 6th (but just one, sorry :( ) Thanks in advance !!!
Thanks for letting me know, nicolas - I'll wait for your new list. ("Masterpieces by Ellington" is definitely worth waiting for!)

Romain, as I did with Miguel, I plan on moving everything from #49 on your list up a notch, since we're combining versions in the 1900-49 poll and I'm only counting the highest ranked version of a song on each individual list. Would you like to add a new #100? (And I apologize for taking so long to find this.)

I'll just mention that I voted for "Weed Smoker's Dream" by Harlem Hamfats (#60), which is the first recording of this same song.

Thanks, bonnielaurel. That's been another challenge of this poll, since many of these songs were recorded under different titles. I hope I'm catching them all, but I hadn't caught this one yet, which could be an ominous sign! :scared-yipes:

I sincerely wish you the best of luck. It's gonna be a tough on you jamieW but I know you can do it. As for "Weed Smoker's Dream" and "Why Don't You Do Right", while the tune was tweaked just a little bit and the lyrics were changed, from a stoner encouraging his woman to go and sell herself to a woman scolding her man for being a bum, the same can be considered as one entry. For me, they're basically the same song.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, Dexter and Romain! I'll be spending the week between the deadline and when I send the spreadsheet to DaveC searching for errors, since research may be the only way to catch some of these and many blues songs share similar lyrics/melodies. The funny thing is both "Weed Smoker's Dream" and "Why Don't You Do Right" were on my list of finalists for my own top 100, which would've given everyone who I've ever asked to correct their lists an opportunity for payback! :P

Henry:

46. Compay Segundo / Yo Vengo Aqui / 1959

I have this song dated 1996 - but he would have been 89 then, so I suspect it would have been recorded earlier. I would have placed it quite high on my list for the 50's if 1959 is correct.

Re: 1900-1959 Individual Lists Submissions Thread

Post by Dan »

Over the past couple of days I’ve been revisiting all the lists posted in this thread. I’ve already said thank you to DaveC, Honorio, nicolas, and Romain for discoveries made through their lists. But just because I feel like it, below are a few more thank-you’s to people who posted songs I really enjoyed listening to that I hadn’t been familiar with before discovering them. Nearly all of those songs were discoveries I had made 6 years ago from people who had also posted lists in the previous polls of this period. Those discoveries back then were very special to me because (as I’ve probably said a million times before) I had a lot to learn about pre-1960s music at the time. Sorry for omitting people who voted this time but didn’t vote in the previous poll: it’s just that I’ve listened to so many songs from this 1900-1959 period that I was probably aware of all the songs you submitted in your lists. And what is special to me will obviously not be special to everyone else.

bonnielaurel: Trio Lescano’s "La canzone delle mosche"
Brad: Professor Longhair’s "Mardi Gras in New Orleans" (I should probably mention, though, that Brad – and AM – list it as a song from 1950, while other sources such as Discogs, RYM and Wikipedia list it as a 1949 song… I’ve gone with 1949 myself)
Charlie Driggs: Alfred Aholo Apaka’s "Na Moku Eha"
Miguel: Antonio Machín’s "Dos gardenias" and Carlos Gardel’s "Por una cabeza"
Mindrocker: Bob Wills’s "Drunkard’s Blues"
sonofsamiam: Igor Stravinsky’s "The Augurs of Spring"

There are other people who made me discover a lot of great songs in the previous polls but who haven’t yet posted updated lists, or who might not be able to post lists this time around (here’s looking at you, Henrik). Also, there might be a list or two more to come before this poll closes, and I’m looking forward to listening to the songs I don’t know on those too!

Anyway, jamieW, I’ve made a minor change to my 1950s songs poll: When I listened to albums for the albums poll I realized that I should’ve included Nina Simone’s classical-influenced “Little Girl Blue” in the 50s songs poll. So it’s a new entry at #79 and everything else moves down one position. This is probably my last change, but I’ll let you know if there’s another.

PS: I love the similarities between my classical favourites and Dexter’s.
...will keep us together.

Trio Lescano was the Italian answer to The Andrews Sisters. They have an interesting history, because they were Jewish (Hungarian-Dutch), but still allowed to perform in Italy before and during WWII. There's an Italian TV film about them: "Le Ragazze dello Swing". In "La canzone delle mosche" they imitate the noise of houseflies.

A quick update, everyone. I will continue to accept lists until this Friday. (I had planned on doing this anyway, but I was "inspired" to make if official once I stumbled upon some old handwritten lists of mine from many years ago with a number of songs I'd like to revisit before submitting my own lists. I should be finished with this by Wednesday.) The most important thing for me is to keep the deadline of 11/13 to send the spreadsheet to DaveC. As long as I have next Saturday and Sunday to make sure the spreadsheet is set, I should be okay. (One thing's for sure: I always knew a lot of work went into these AMF polls, but I now have an even greater admiration for all the hosts we've had for them. It can be a very daunting task - and this poll doesn't have anywhere near the participation of some of our all-time polls!

Well, I said the three times extended deadline would be today, but since I haven't posted my own lists yet (I'm nearly finished, so I will tomorrow morning) feel free to submit a late list if you'd like. I still plan on doing everything I can to get the spreadsheet to DaveC for the presentation by the end of the day Sunday, but there might be a couple of days delay. (Please let me know if that's a problem, Dave.) As you all can imagine, it's been a rough week for me (and much of America/the world) and I haven't had the time, ambition or enthusiasm to work on my lists and the spreadsheet. (I'm still completely heartbroken - especially needing to explain things to my kids.) But life goes on, and my weekend is completely free, so I hope to stay on schedule. Thanks for your patience, everyone.

Finally finished! There's still so much more I didn't have a chance to listen to. For the multiple versions I had difficulty choosing from in the 1900-1949 songs, I listed my other favorites in parentheses. As I mentioned earlier, I didn't have time for albums this time around. (I knew it was going to be a busy time for me, but I wanted to make sure the first half of the 20th century wasn't left out in the decade poll rotation.)
