Re: UMT 2012: Round of 64 #4
Led Zeppelin- Van Halen can only get by on a great debut album for so long.
Metallica- Tough call here. Metallica is one of the best of a genre I don't really care for. When I do listen to heavy metal it's usually Metallica but it's not that often. I'm a casual fan of jazz but am very picky on what style of jazz I like, and most of the time Miles falls out of that comfort zone. So, I very rarely listen to Miles Davis. If I'm being honest, I'd prefer to listen to Metallica.
Frank Sinatra- I didn't realize Sinatra got through... interesting. Yeah, I'll take him over Bob Marley any day of the week.
John Coltrane- I'm not going to hate on The Clash because I get their influence, but there are so many other punk bands I prefer over them. Coltrane's moving on in my ballot again on the wings of Love Supreme and My Favorite Things. I'm pretty sure that plane's going to be landing in the round of 64 though.
The Beatles- I was on a major Family Stone kick a couple years ago, But even then, I wouldn't have had to think about it.
Simon & Garfunkel- The Beach Boys will never get the respect from me as one of the greatest of all time because in my not so humble opinion, they only created one great album. I always held out hope that the Smile bootlegs were missing something that hadn't been released, so when the definitive version was released last year it was a disappointment because it didn't elevate Smile from good to great. In the end, I'm left with a band with a lot of great singles and one great album. Still a great band for sure, but still a few arms lengths away from the greatest ever.
The Kinks- I've been listening to some of the Kinks stuff after the peak years what most call "For fans only" and it's still pretty enjoyable. Nothing great, but the songwriting is still there. I have yet to dive into the stuff that's labeled "Even fans should stay away"
New Order- I think this is my first time voting for New Order. They are a band where I really enjoy most of their singles but I've never given any of their albums a chance other then the comeback album. I always say that Get Ready is my favorite New Order album but I can't say that for sure. Tackling a few of their acclaimed albums is definitely on my to do list.
Metallica- Tough call here. Metallica is one of the best of a genre I don't really care for. When I do listen to heavy metal it's usually Metallica but it's not that often. 1) Led Zeppelin
2) Metallica (to be fair, I've had pretty limited exposure to Miles at this point. Just BITCHES' BREW, SKETCHES OF SPAIN and BIRTH OF THE COOL.)
3) Frank Sinatra (I love Marley but there are more great Sinatra tunes than great Marley ones, IMHO...)
4) The Clash
5) Sorry Sly...Beatles are my 2nd favourite band. Beatles
6) The Beach Boys...not even close...
7) Depeche Mode
8) James Brown

I voted for Simon (and Garfunkel ). But, I can not believe that they won, I was expecting a Beach Boys landslide.Greg Rumpff wrote:This is absolutely painfulSimon & Garfunkel over The Beach Boys (22-21)
