MCCh 2016 (09) May 31

Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2016 (update May 31)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating and the number of reviews (out of 30 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; LesInrocks; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: DIY; Drowned In Sound; The Guardian; Music OMH; NME; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny; The 405
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club; Consequence Of Sound; Exclaim!; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Spin; Tinymixtapes

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, Gaffa.dk, Gaffa.se, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, etc…

No love at all for the new Death Grips album? I'm not a super fan of them, but I thought that album was awesome.

The best.

It is. The Chart misses these cultural touchstones every once in a while - usually if they're more hip hop or experimental-influenced.

Bottomless Pit, for whatever reason, seems to have been entirely overlooked by most critics. It only has 8 reviews on metacritic, which is bizarre considering how talked about this band is.

Well here's hoping that the EOY lists will be kinder to Bottomless Pit than megacritic has. But judging by the lack of anything post-Money Store on AM, I don't think it's too likely.

To me, that cover isn't nearly as disturbing as, say, the ultra-gory guro art in the liner notes of Flying Lotus' You're Dead! I'm used to looking at it now, but when it first came out it was a jolting shock to the system, since I tend to go out of my way to avoid such images.

"It wouldn't be a Lemon party without old Dick!"
-- Liz Lemon's father Dick (Buck Henry), on 30 Rock; a sly reference to "lemonparty," one of the classic shock-link photos that used to be big with Internet pranksters, a picture involving elderly nudity that makes the Hotelier cover look, well, as harmless as it actually is

Thanks for this. Very interesting. I don't think the cover is bad or in poor taste. I was just startled/rattled a little bit. LOL.

You forgot to add that these three men featured on the website were in sexual positions; I think I'd rather look at the Hotelier cover.

Well obviously some right-thinking folks @ Spotify think it's disgusting. They blurred the cover ! :angry-nono:
