Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Let Love In vs. Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense

Both these artists have accomplished much more.

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk vs. Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers

Absolutely no contest, even though Tusk is no classic.

Stop Making Sense

Great set from a great film.

Tusk

Fountains of Wayne have done better.

Real Nighttime

Drake is an artist who I think could be great but always falls just short and has to settle for "pretty good". Game Theory was a pleasant surprise.

1. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Let Love In vs. Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
2. Fleetwood Mac - Tusk vs. Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers

The far better Fleetwood Mac self-titled was eliminated in week 3; this time it's Fountains of Wayne turn to take the bad draw. Tusk is an average album lifted by a great single. Welcome Interstate Managers is a pretty good album except for an execrable single. Tusk wins.

4. Emma Ruth Rundle - Some Heavy Ocean vs. Have a Nice Life - Deathconsciousness

Fun fact: my school's marching band played the backing track on the song "Tusk", and since then, it's become our unofficial anthem. They play it at every football game, and yes, I was biased in making this choice.

Also, Some Heavy Ocean is probably my favorite discovery of the tournament so far.

1. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Let Love In vs. Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
One of Nick Cave's finest albums - if not THE finest. Red Right Hand is an outright classic, but there is no filler in "Let Love In" Very menacing indeed. Talking Heads gets the chop here simply because I cannot vote for a live album vs an original work, however great the live album is (and it is..)

2. Fleetwood Mac - Tusk vs. Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers
I do find Tusk very bland - trademark Fleetwood Mack but ultimately un-exciting. FoW sounds an awful lot like Oasis towards the end of the album, but the first part is top notch power pop, they get my vote.

3. Drake - Nothing Was the Same vs. Game Theory - Real Nighttime
Actually I was pleasantly surprised by Drake's album, in spite of all the bad press he gets. But the album has some real decent beats, in spite of a very average delivery. I didn't know Game Theory, Loud Family's previous incarnation - TBH, it sounds exactly the same. Scott Miller's voice is unique and very melodious.

4. Emma Ruth Rundle - Some Heavy Ocean vs. Have a Nice Life - Deathconsciousness
Have a Nice Life delivers a HUGE album. How did I miss this ? It's right up my alley, there are some killer songs in this album.... And it's ranked #3 on RYM for 2008 ? Some Heavy Ocean is good, gloomy, dark with an ethereal female voice which would have won match # 3. However, Deathconsciousness is a beast - long pieces of shoegaze rock interspesed with quieter moments. A great discovery.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Let Love In
Fleetwood Mac - Tusk
Drake - Nothing Was the Same
Have a Nice Life - Deathconsciousness

"Let Love In" is probably my favorite Nick Cave album. The last matchup was great for me - two moody, gloomy albums that were certain to appeal to my taste. Since I was a big fan of "The Unnatural World," I've been meaning to listen to "Deathconsciouness" for a while now - and now I'm so glad I have, since I found it to be even better!

3. Drake - Nothing Was the Same vs. Game Theory - Real Nighttime

I mean no offense to Game Theory's terrific jangle pop collection, which encourages me to lend an ear to Lolita Nation and/or The Big Shot Chronicles, but this was a slamdunk victory for Drake.

Nothing Was the Same is, in many ways, Drake's Dark Fantasy. Both records feature pop juggernauts at the height of their powers looking inward while boldly projecting outward over lush, often bombastic, beats. Much like Kanye, Drake struggles with his fame and fights with every fiber of his being to maintain sanity. "Somewhere between psychotic and iconic," uttered on the moody second track "Furthest Thing", may as well serve as the album's thesis statement. Drake has never been better than when he turns the mirror to reveal his own faults and failures, and after the boast-fueled roundhouse-kick-to-the-face opener of "Tuscan Leather," Drake retreats within himself and reflects upon, among other things, regrets, lost loves, and mortality. The album peaks as Drake cavorts from the viper venom bars of "Worst Behavior" to the tender, yearning "From Time" to easily the warmest track in Drake's career, "Hold On, We're Going Home." Before closing the book on his odyssey through fame, Drake, with the help of Sampha, drops one of the few songs that has never failed to give me chills: "Too Much."

Even if you're no fan of Drake's raps or flow, I definitely encourage you to visit his entire discography if only to focus on the incredible beats of Noah "40" Shebib and co. As captivating as Drake's progression throughout his career is 40's increasingly adventurous production. "Nothing was the same" is not simply a rumination on Aubrey Graham's evolution from child actor with hip-hop dreams to being the biggest rap star of the decade; it is a confident declaration that the hip-hop landscape has forever changed. The "singing rapper," Drake, and the moody beatmaker, 40, took the lead and the rap game hasn't looked back.
I just wanted to be one of those ghosts
You thought that you could forget
And then I haunt you via the rear view mirror
On a long drive from the back seat...
