After thinking a lot about it, I've decided to change my vote from Duran Duran to Ofra Haza. I went entirely by my song ratings spreadsheet and "The Reflex" is a childhood favorite (I cling onto some of these like raggedy old stuffed animals); but I've been asking myself, honestly, which would I rather listen to now? In that regard, Ms. Haza wins in a landslide. I've edited my post above...

No contest.
5905. The Velvet Underground - Who Loves the Sun?
Hardest choice there.
5985 - Beastie Boys - Root Down
There is a cheesy-ness about Tom Jones which I CANNOT get past :)
5874. Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
5944. Ofra Haza - Im nin'alu
5897. Corey Hart - Sunglasses at Night
5881. Sinéad O'Connor - The Emperor's New Clothes

Another tough one, and even though I really like Spoon, Eagle Eye Cherry is superior

It was the other way around for me. When I initially looked at the match-ups, I was sure that I was going to choose the Ofra Haza song. But then I listened to the Duran Duran song a few times, and although it's definitely not going to be a new entry into my top 500 songs list, I liked it a lot and felt that I enjoyed listening to it more than I do to the Ofra Haza song. When I first listened to "The Reflex" I realized that I had heard it once or twice many years ago, but that it somehow completely passed me by when I listened to songs for the forum's 80s poll three years ago. Yeah, the song's verses are a complete mess, but the 'why-yay-yay-yay' in the bridge and the fantastically catchy chorus got me quite excited. I'm too much of a sucker for 80s new wave and synth, which is why I also chose Rockwell's synth funk fabulousness over Dire Straits.

This is a fun game. I missed the first round, but I'm looking forward to participating in the rest of round 2.

It's funny you mention the "why-yay-yay-yay," Dan, because, as I said, this was a childhood favorite and even made my "Top 10 of the year" list way back then. My dad, however, could not stand the song, and used to mock that part mercilessly to the point that now, whenever I hear the song, that is the only part that sticks in my head. I wonder if (subconsciously) that is what made me change my vote, since I kept hearing Ofra's gorgeous voice ... and then my dad mockingly singing "why-yay-yay-yah" over and over. Like you, I'm a sucker for 80s new wave and synths (which is why I also voted for Rockwell, as well as Corey Hart); but I think my dad might've unwittingly rescued Ofra!
