The Sonics - Here Are the Sonics!!!
When I rated these two albums, they came out exactly a tie. "Strychnine" was the tiebreaker.

Sisters of Mercy - Floodland
"Minimal Nation" is a very good techno album. Unfortunately, anytime a goth album is nominated - especially a longtime favorite - there's little chance for the challenger.

El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead
One of the all-time great album titles. The experimental music isn't bad, either.

La Femme - Psycho Tropical Berlin
Two terrific albums (in fact, my two favorites of the week again). Familiarity wins out here, since I think it was Romain who recommended "Psycho Tropical Berlin" a few years ago, and I loved it from the start.

Bonnielaurel, just to clarify, which album are you voting for here? (You have The Sonics bolded, but you have it ranked 6th and Spoon 5th.)

JamieW, if I like a lot La Femme (and their new album seems excellent if I just take the two songs already listenable), I think the biggest lover for the band is Nassim ;-)

Oh! I get a lot of recommendations from the album ratings you post in the yearly album threads, and I must have thought this is where I first listened to La Femme. However, now that I think about it, maybe Nassim nominated it for the moderately acclaimed game Jirin hosts at the end of every year? (My memory is failing me in my old age.) Whoever did nominate it, thank you though, because I still love it! :music-listening:

I have given to the first album of La Femme a very good 8,5/10 in 2013, it's maybe in my list you see La Femme the first time but I know Nassim is the hardest advocate of this band.
Halas, it encouter Eric Truffaz in the game, because it's the two best albums of the week for me.

I think that's it! What a relief - the only thing I have a good memory about is music. I'd hate to think that's going, too. ;)

And I agree completely about Truffaz. I hadn't heard the album and just assumed it couldn't defeat La Femme. But it was great and made it a more difficult decision than I anticipated.

1. Spoon - Kill The Moonlight vs. The Sonics - Here Are the Sonics!!!
I hate to have to cast a vote against The Sonics, but upon listening to Kill the Moonlight again, I am convinced this is one of the best toned down, minimalist indie rock record of the 2000s, a pure pleasure. The Sonics' debut is excellent, but somehow it lacks originality by overly revisiting of rock'n'roll classics through the filter of garage rock. Strychnine is fabulous, though.

2. Robert Hood - Minimal Nation vs. Sisters of Mercy - Floodland
Minimal Nation is very good. I can understand why it is considered the pinnacle and huge influence on minimal techno. It is not dissimilar to Plastikman's masterwork, Musik. However, it is pitted against THE reference of gothic rock. That album travelled with me for years and is definitely one of my desert island record. Lucretia, my reflection is a far better single than the much more acclaimed This Corrosion.

3. El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead vs. Anita O'Day - Pick Yourself Up With Anita O'Day
Same as Nassim. I project myself far more in El-P than the 50s era of Anita O'Day. A generational thing, I guess :)

4. La Femme - Psycho Tropical Berlin vs. Eric Truffaz - Bending New Corners
I discovered the La Femme's 2013 album only a few weeks ago and it seems befitting it now appears on MAA. A clear contender for French album of 2013, the album blew me away immediately. Immensely catchy tunes with a little dose of French language, I adored it from the first song until the end. Eric Truffaz reminds me of Guru - great discovery again !

What a great week, there's not been a single bad album.

Yes, that's exactly it, I nominated it for the overlooked albums of 2013 poll, and back in this year Moderately Acclaimed !

1. Spoon - Kill the Moonlight
Exactly what spiritualized said.

4. La Femme - Psycho Tropical Berlin
I ended up enjoying Bending New Corners more than I expected, but it's facing a personal fav.

I'll try to listen to Anita O'Day's album before the deadline, but it's pretty sure I'd save my pick, I'll Sleep When You're Dead, which I'd probably rank as my 4th or 5th favorite hip-hop album of all time.

3. El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead
Pick Yourself Up is a beautiful relic of the past, but I'll Sleep When You're Dead is the sound of the (hopefully dystopian) future blasting out.
