Time for a tally! Kendrick Lamar --- in top 50?

I'll say yes.
I hope so!! He definitely deserves it! Although, I have to admit it won't be because of me, if I'm being honest. He is fairly new and my system takes a while for new artists to break in...but I'm rooting for a nice surprise!!

One more batch for today, setting us up for the Top 50. I'm calling it quits for the night as I go to sleep hoping 2016 will be over soon in light of some more pleasant recent news today (WHAT. A. TIME. TO. BE. ALIVE).

I was not expect Elton John to enter the top 50, but I am happy.

Eno, LCD, and Sufjan entering the top 50 is also great.

Agree about the R&B thing, though. I'm almost relieved that James Brown managed to get as high as #55, which I never thought is something I'd need to say.

Brian Eno in the top 50 is awesome! Sufjan deserves it too, and has an under-appreciated argument to being the best artist since 2000. LCD is a little high for me given the small discography, but still cool to see them rank so highly.

Listened to the Jacques Brel songs mentioned in his write-up here, and I liked them! Any recommendations outside of those 3 listed?

These were the first three songs I recall hearing of his, so I'm s complete newbie! I've taken to some French music since visiting there a couple years ago, but hadn't listened to Jacques. Thanks for the recs! That album doesn't seem to be on Aussie Spotify unfortunately, but there are a number of comps which may contain a lot of the songs.

Oh, Spotify took down the entire album everywhere. I can confirm that the entire ten-track album is on compilations, though, but I have U.S. so I can't be too sure about you.

A few more of my personal favorites are "Les bergers," "Fernand," and "Le moribond." It really helps to watch his live performances on YouTube, since he was one of the most electric performers I've ever seen. He's definitely one of those artists who absolutely commanded attention and the more I've watched/listened to him, the more my appreciation has grown.

Very, very happy to see Blur in the top 50, especially after their lackluster (a relative word, considering they came in at number 90) placement in the 2013 poll.

Well, I regret starting it all with my comments on Nickelback and Guns N' Roses. It was all innocent for me, but given how derisive many of our comments were lately, I'm pretty sure now that our newcomers/lurkers from this time around won't even dare to vote again in the future.

As others pointed out, this was a list of our favourite acts, not the best ever. Apparently people who don't intervene on the forum decide not to do so because their tastes are too different from those who do. That's a shame for both sides in my opinion, even considering that my tastes are, Radiohead aside, more inclined toward the active members than the passive ones.

To you guys, I apologize again. I'm sort of a sarcastic person in general, but my approach to music is just as amateurish as anyone else's who only received a succinct eduction in music. Please take it for what it is.

I agree with you. I want to apologize for those who might have been a bit offended by some of my comments. Most of these things are said out of shock. I mean, Backstreet Boys over quite a few established artists? Bee Gees ranking that high just surprised me so much that my jaw literally dropped. I didn't expect them to rank that high above Sly & the Family Stone and Chuck Berry and others...

However, I will never like Celine Dion. I hope this will be accepted and I might make comments concerning this (all without disrespect to those people who will like her).

EDIT: And, people, please don't be afraid to join discussions. It's a friendly place (and again, I must apologize for my occasional snarky comments).

No worries. I voted for Fleetwood Mac, but given the option, later FM would not make my top 100, but Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac would be higher. Again, just personal preference, not implying any value judgement of bands or voters.

Hello moonbeam, I'm happy to see you here more often, I miss you with your "different love" in music.

And you know, you can always found recommandations for French music here. ;)
Contrary to Gainsbourg or Brassens whose entire albums and songs are good or excellent, Brel, for me, make some of the greatest french songs ever but a lot of not so good songs, so, it's rare, but for Brel, I prefer to recommand you a Best Of, this one for example is perfect https://www.discogs.com/fr/Brel-Quinze- ... ter/140630

And I can give you my personnal favorites (as always, with the "chansons", the words are most important than the music.)
So, the first three you have already listened :
Amsterdam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2kkr0e_dTQ
Vesoul https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guaEg2U89p8 song that imposed in common langage in France the expression "Chauffe Marcel"
Ne me quitte pas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_bq5mStroM (the most beautiful love song ever written, maybe ?!)
Orly
Jojo
Quand on a que l'amour https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3fpCztWWug
Les vieux https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-nyLvIuHDU
La chanson de Jacky

La quête https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2kn0Q3UHOc
Ces gens-là https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxqNP2O4N1w He was really an incredible "showman", it's obvious in this one.

Hi Pierre,

I love the sarcasm!! I am not offended in the least as I tend to be a very laid back, go with the flow type of person. I feel everyone is entitled to their opinion whether it be snarky or straight forward. Besides, it makes for more interesting forum when people disagree. If everyone felt the same way, that would definitely make it very boring. I cannot speak for the other newcomers but I would be willing to bet that they probably feel the same way. I did notice some newcomers defending their choices which is great. I'm having fun and love the anticipation of the reveal. I can say that this site has opened up a lot of interest in artists I never knew about. I feel it has influenced to some extent what I listen to. There is a lot of acclaimed music that coincides with my personal tastes but I also have a lot of guilty pleasures too.

Hopefully, those who voted will continue to participate in the forum. My very first post was for the songs poll, and someone whose opinion on music I value and respect as much as anyone in the world mentioned in passing that he was shocked by the sudden high ranking of my all-time favorite song (which, of course, I was the major reason for). There was nothing malicious about it (quite the contrary!), and I don't think there's been anything malicious said so far about any of the surprising high-placements here. I think it's all about exposure, and those that stick around will find their lists change the more they hear. (It doesn't mean they'll stop loving their favorite artists any more than I have. As stated many times before, I do love my "unacclaimed" music, too.) However, the more I hear, the more my lists have changed, and I look forward to them evolving even more over time. I think I said earlier that all I hope is that people vote honestly (which they obviously have!) and that they're open to listening to music from all eras/genres/nations/etc. If people do vote for their favorites, and then disappear from the forum forever, it would kind of confirm my second fear...

Although I did not feel offended by any comments, sometimes I don't understand what some folks here want. JimmyJazz told us to make a list of our favorite artists, and simply, was what I did.

Bee Gees is my favorite artist and I think it will always be. And for one who asked, yes, I heard the whole discography of them.

Also, I would like to thank Jimmy Jazz, to present the results in an incredible way.

The rules definitely stated not to vote for who you think is the greatest artist of all time. Obviously, there are some people who have participated that feel very strongly about the Bee Gees.
My list would have been exactly the same.
Wow, I have to say I am very surprised. My two lists would be very different indeed. For me, it's very hard to separate what is considered acclaimed music from personal tastes. Many people will say that their choices are the best regardless of what critics say or anyone else. It's all in good fun. I appreciate the comment. :D No matter where our favorite artists land on the list, the chance to comment and read what others have to say is wonderful.

Hi JamieW,

Very well stated like a true diplomat. I think most will stick around. I hope everyone knows that its all in jest and don't take comments too seriously. I have seen nothing out of line, just people simply giving opinions which is what it's all about. I would have to echo your comment about how tastes evolve over time after exposing ones self to new music. I think one of the strengths of this site is it's ability to expose people to different music. I know it has opened up a whole new world for me. Thank you to the creator(s) of the site!!

Well I'm glad people don't seem to feel offended by the comments on Bee Gees, Coldplay, GnR, etc. I'd still suggest one thing: if we are going to do alternative tops 100 with only the "veteran" AM or most active AM users, it would be great to make one with only the newcomers as well. This way they won't have a reason to feel somewhat "excluded", and maybe it will be great to contrast these tops. There may be interesting lessons to take from such a comparison, at least in my opinion.

Bravo, Profeta! I don't know why some are applauding those who post "in jest" when we all know there were real sentiments behind those "jokes." You were at the receiving end of some of the mudslinging having been one of the top voters for ABBA, Guns N' Roses and Bee Gees. If your #5 artist, Christopher Cross, made it I'm pretty sure all hell would break loose. It takes courage to come out and tell it like it is! They're simply your favorite artists, critics and "high-brow" regular forumers be damned. The fact that many voted the same artists as you validates your ranking of the aforesaid artists... and God bless Christopher Cross.

The whole point of my post was not to applaud anybody. I was merely trying to convey that it should not matter what others think about your taste and personal choices. I am sorry if I did not bring that point home. That was truly the intent. I did post that the Bee Gees were my #66 choice plus made notice that people were standing up and defending their choices, which is awesome!

Maybe not. The way I see it, the opinions of these others, who are mostly regulars, clearly matter. Sorry but I don't see their "sarcasm" and "clean fun" as a form of encouragement for the newcomers. Take profeta's statement "Although I did not feel offended by any comments, sometimes I don't understand what some folks here want." That second part of her sentence drives home my point. It's as if transfer students were given a hard time by the old students on their first day of school. Please "regulars" and "veterans" please reassess your mode of encouraging those new to the forum to post and participate, if indeed new blood is welcomed. I see some have already apologized, so let's ease up on the wisecracks from hereon out.

Yep, what Dexter said. It's great that some haven't been offended, but others who haven't replied probably have. There's 2 types of music: music you like and music you don't and even both of those change over time. As some have said music should unite, not cause even more division.

I completely understand your point and it is well taken. I myself am not a regular as this is my first forum that I have participated in. Yes, I will admit that I was a little apprehensive to say the least. There are some very knowledgeable people on this site when it comes to music and it was very off-putting to me to even attempt to join in. There are some people with brains like machines and can quote X song on Y album and give you all the particulars. I am not that smart. LOL I don't think anybody on this site truly wants to disparage anyone. Most have been very apologetic. To use your own example of the transfer student, it is very customary for people to be initiated into the group and "razz" them up a bit. I myself am ok with my tastes being criticized and anybody that participates should come to expect it, but in a non-threatening way. We all should able to express our tastes to each other in a nice way. We are all not going to agree with each other's choices. I do not want to offend anybody or make them feel bad about their choices. I sincerely hope I have not offended anyone. btw, I do like Christopher Cross but he is definitely not in my top 500. In closing, I just want to say I apologize and I did not mean to offend anyone. I hope you will accept my apology.

I can't speak for the regulars/veterans on how they feel about it but I am sure they will weigh in.

Namely, newcomers who have not reacted yet (or maybe I missed them) and whose favourite artists took some flak are Karla, kaue, renan_antonio and vivian. Seriously guys, personally I'm sorry for what has been said. Your tastes are as legitimate as others'. This forum ain't very friendly to "classic rock" acts but we need people to weigh in and counterbalance this fact, or at least stir debate :text-imsorry:

Guys, if you look the Tour de France, they will pass just next to my house in almost 10 minutes.
Yes, no connection with music (except Kraftwerk) but I had to tell ;-)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YXDd_NKhac

And I think that Kraftwerk will come soon in our ranking list.

And for the newcomers, welcome. Maybe you can explain your stories in the appropiate thread. ;)
It's obvious, I think, you all come from another forum (or you are a group of friends) and whatever, you have the right to play here. After all, I have the same feeling with some artist like Kanye West or Dylan than some here have for Coldplay or GnR a complete misunderstanding about their success.

I just hope you will enlarge your knowledge of music with this wonderful website.

Don't be shocked about the Bee Gees. They really are more generally respected than maybe more than half of the top 100 so far. Unless you're just shocked that it's within this forum's known favorites.

Somewhere in the past three years I have joined the AMF mindmeld; only three of my list of 50 appear to be outside the top 500 and I still have 23 artists in play. Of course with only 50 nominees my list is heavy on the canon artists.

Nonetheless, I was rather distressed at the "jesting" tone of some of the comments in this thread, to the extent that I was wondering if AM is still the friendliest discussion forum on the Internet, something we both take pride in and self police with a passion.

The Artists Poll always seems to bring out tribalism in the worst way. Three years ago we also saw a rather fractious poll which I think led to the eventual ouster of one contentious member and we can see the effects of that in the diminished standing of 1950s R&B artists this year. Is it because we can agree to disagree with the majority on our favourite songs or albums, but the artists are people who we feel we have some special relationship with? Bad news folks; Kanye and Celine have no idea you exist. Karla, Kaue, Neil et al on the other hand are very real people and can be hurt by our casual words.

So I join you in welcoming our newcomers and I am glad that good manners are once again the AMF norm this morning.

Sorry, Doc... I didn't mean to. I just comment sometimes (which means all the time) on everything and sometimes I get too snarky for my own good. It's just a part of my character. Again, I'm sorry. I should have learned from your mistakes. On that note, did you at least listen to Jackie Wilson's "Your Love Keeps Me Lifting (Higher and Higher)" in the three years since?

And, Georgie, I don't know how to tell you, but the Bee Gees are not that respected as you think. Too many people hate disco, mainly because they think Bee Gees are disco. Just my own personal experience. Maybe you have a difference experience, but I would have a much easier time getting the people I know into The National than Bee Gees. That's mainly where my shock came from. Again, I don't hate the Bee Gees, but the fact they landed so high here was totally against my own experience and what I have seen on this forum in the last few years.

With all the talk of the Bee Gees I was wondering about their relative placement against Chic; then I noticed Chic hasn't placed yet. Does that mean they're out of the top 500, or in the top 50???
