And can someone who knows what they're doing tell me if that version of Psyche Rock is correct?

Poor 23 got a bad draw; Psyche Rock was one of those weird experiences where I'm completely familiar with a song structured off if it (the Futurama theme song in this case). So it made me bizarrely nostalgic, even though I had never actually heard the original before. Heimdalsgate has this engaging, manic atmosphere, while I adore most of Todd Terje's hits. Mogwai is one of those great bands that never get much attention with their songs, but I do really like a lot of them. Overall, a really good week for electronic-heavy music.

23, Egyptian Shumba, and 3rd Planet are the only songs in my top 1,000, though Initials B.B. will probably soon join them there. I'm happy someone nominated 23, it's one of the most absurdly underrated songs of the last decade.

Awesome selection once again, only in AM would you find such a cool hand-pick playlist.
None of my picks this week, but 3 songs that could have been !

7.The Tammys - Egyptian Shumba
vs.
14. Procol Harum - A Salty Dog

16. My Bloody Valentine - Only Tomorrow
vs.
6. Mogwai - 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong
If both The Tammys and Mogwai make it to next round, that will be a tough pick that could go either way (any other combination would be an easy choice, I'd pick A Salty Dog over Only Tomorrow any day)

4. Serge Gainsbourg - Initials B.B.
vs.
2. Mano Negra - Mala Vida
Must be quite a tough pick for any frenchy around here, 2 staple songs around here. Initials B.B. sounds more than any song like a glorious TD ad, a sonic campaign to support the rise of an actress. That being said, Mala Vida was one of my favorite songs as a teen, and still a must play at any party or wedding of people my age.

9. Pierre Henry - Psyche Rock
vs.
8. Blonde Redhead - 23
Another very hard pick, though a product of its time with its psyche vibe, Psyché Rock is also way ahead and sounds like many of the 90s music, Beck most particularly. 23 on the other hand is a brilliant example of dream-pop/gaze, a genre that failed much more often than not.

1. Todd Terje - Delorean Dynamite
vs.
12. Rufus Wainwright - The One You Love
How Delorean Dynamite is not considered top 10 of its year is beyond me, funniest song of the year not featuring punchlines from Killer Mike and El-P, and imo a much better song than Inspector Norse, though I'll leave it be the most acclaimed for coming first. Strandbar however, comes close.

15. Elton John - Someone Saved My Life Tonight
vs.
11. Wilco - Via Chicago
I have bet on Via Chicago to win the poll on the bracketmaker prediction, but it doesn't seem to be as liked as I thought...

5. Foo Fighters - The Pretender
vs.
13. Of Montreal - Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse
There is only one Of Montreal song that really works for me, and it's not that one. That being said, it's easily their 2nd best I have heard.

3. Modest Mouse - 3rd Planet
vs.
10. Alanis Morissette - Ironic
I love Modest Mouse, even a song I would barely put in their top 10 is still freaking awesome in my book, and a great introduction to an outstanding album.

12.The Tammys - Egyptian Shumba vs.
16.Procol Harum - A Salty Dog

Really, really don't like the Procol Harum song - one hit wonder ?

2.My Bloody Valentine - Only Tomorrow
vs.
5.Mogwai - 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong

I can't believe it, but this is the first time I am listening to a track from m b v. Yet, this is one of my favorite bands, like, ever. What a track. I have been postponing this for too long.

8.Serge Gainsbourg - Initials B.B.
vs.
3.Mano Negra - Mala Vida

Nassim is right on the spot - very tough choice. Mala Vida is just such an entertaining song, and I think the mixing on Initials BB is a bit weird. Gainsbourg's voice is too forward in the song, and as he is not the greatest singer ever...

12.Pierre Henry - Psyche Rock
vs.
4.Blonde Redhead - 23

9.Todd Terje - Delorean Dynamite
vs.
7.Rufus Wainwright - The One You Love

Horrible choice to make, loved Todd Terje, a total new discovery for me. But I have always been very fond of Rufus' output.

15.Elton John - Someone Saved My Life Tonight
vs.
14.Wilco - Via Chicago

Mmmm. meh. Not into slow songs from Wilco.

1.Foo Fighters - The Pretender
vs.
10.Of Montreal - Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse

The Pretender is a monster of a song, a pure rocker - the video helps with this feeling, and because Dave Grohl.

11.Modest Mouse - 3rd Planet
vs.
6.Alanis Morissette - Ironic

3 The Tammys - Egyptian Shumba
vs.
8 Procol Harum - A Salty Dog

"A Salty Dog" is a lovely tune. But "Egyptian Shumba" is so utterly wack that it deserves to win.

12 My Bloody Valentine - Only Tomorrow
vs.
1 Mogwai - 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong

I remember when mbv came out, a lot of people singled out this song as one of the best, but I never felt that way as much as I did about say, "she found now" or "nothing is". And on the other hand, "2 Rights Make 1 Wrong" is Mogwai's overall pinnacle as an artist.

9 Serge Gainsbourg - Initials B.B.
vs.
11 Mano Negra - Mala Vida

I spent a summer waiting tables in a Mexican restaurant once and I think it gave me a psychological aversion to music like "Mala Vida" - a shame, because it does seem like a nice song. And I've not really listened to Gainsbourg the way that most of our forumers have, but this song's giving me good reason to do so.

15 Pierre Henry - Psyche Rock
vs.
4 Blonde Redhead - 23

Modern day Cocteau Twins takes it with ease.

10 Todd Terje - Delorean Dynamite
vs.
14 Rufus Wainwright - The One You Love

Neither amazed me, but both were good.

13 Elton John - Someone Saved My Life Tonight
vs.
5 Wilco - Via Chicago

Never been the biggest fan of Jeff Tweedy's voice but for whatever reason it doesn't bother me here at all.

6 Foo Fighters - The Pretender
vs.
16 Of Montreal - Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse

The Of Montreal song sounds like a Phoenix knockoff. And the Foo Fighters only do one thing, but on "The Pretender", they do it very, very well.

2 Modest Mouse - 3rd Planet
vs.
7 Alanis Morissette - Ironic

I've never sided with the people who criticize Alanis' song for not being "technically ironic" - this is pop music, not semantics, and an amazing pop song shouldn't be beholden to such a minor distinction. However, no matter how good a song it is, the universe-encompassing "3rd Planet" is one of the best songs on my number one album of all time.

I always wondered if it was meant to be ironic that a song called "Ironic" listed a bunch of scenarios that weren't technically ironic. (Probably not, but Alanis might want to say that was the case.)

To be fair, many of the scenarios could be considered ironic.

"happening in a way contrary to what is expected, and typically causing wry amusement because of this" is what google says. And regardless of whether they are so, it's easy to see that the events described in the song would seem normal to anyone, should they happen in their life.

True. It's funny, after reading your post I did an online search and couldn't believe the number of links debating the subject. (Including a number of term papers and an article from Salon dated 2014 claiming that these were indeed ironies. Who would've thought this would still be an argument nearly 20 years after its release?) Maybe I should amend my previous post to say it's ironic that, so many years later, people are still debating if a song called "Ironic" is truly ironic.

Whether "Ironic" is ironic or not, though, Alanis could definitely write. I really liked "Jagged Little Pill," but I liked her follow-up, "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie," even more. "I Was Hoping" and "Joining You" are especially worth a listen.

Whether "Ironic" is ironic or not, though, Alanis could definitely write. I really liked "Jagged Little Pill," but I liked her follow-up, "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie," even more. "I Was Hoping" and "Joining You" are especially worth a listen.
Yeah. Of all the singer songwriters from the 90s, I maintain that Alanis Morissete and Jewel were the best, especially song writing wise; where Jewel's lyrics have more poesy, while Alanis' are more prosey.

Also, with respect to Alanis' albums, JLP is a larger favorite, but I agree that SFIJ is painfully underrated, and a fantastic record.

Re: Overlooked Songs: Round 1 Week 6

An interesting week, not just because I like everything here, but because it also contains a lot of artist I don't usually take to, but somehow deliver this time around.

4. The Tammys - Egyptian Shumba
vs.
13. Procol Harum - A Salty Dog

It seems like The Tammys are the missing link between sixties pop and The B-52's. Great discovery and tons of fun.

10. My Bloody Valentine - Only Tomorrow
vs.
3. Mogwai - 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong

My Bloody Valentine have never, without exception, been able to capture my attention, but suddenly they do with Only Tomorrow. However, Mogwai truly impresses here.

8. Serge Gainsbourg - Initials B.B.
vs.
15. Mano Negra - Mala Vida

Another example of an artist unexpectedly delivering something I like. Initials B.B. is great fun. Mala Vida is also catchy, but seems a little generic too.

2. Pierre Henry - Psyché Rock
vs.
7. Blonde Redhead - 23

Psyché Rock is simply amazing. Another great discovery and a true original. Not that 23 is a minor effort.

14. Todd Terje - Delorean Dynamite
vs.
5. Rufus Wainwright - The One You Love

In some songs Rufus Wainwright's voice pulls me off, but not here. Even better, it a wonderful composition. I've ignored Todd Terje up until now and at first he seemed to fall into a certain dance category I don't care for, but the song does develop into something special over time. Yet still far from special enough to defeat Wainwright.

1. Elton John - Someone Saved My Life Tonight
vs.
12. Wilco - Via Chicago

My second of three nominations and again it seems to be destroyed. I think this is one of Elton's best songs, with a great main piano line, some of his most soulful singing, a wonderful build-up with an equally great pay-off and some of the most simple, but heartfelt lyrics written by Taupin. Via Chicago is good too, but not a particular stand-out from Wilco if you ask me.

6. Foo Fighters - The Pretender
vs.
11. Of Montreal - Heimdalsgate Like a Promethean Curse

I'm usually indifferent to Foo Fighters, but damn, if every single one of their songs rocked as well as this one I would adore them. Of Montreal are good too, but this is really no comparison.

16. Modest Mouse - 3rd Planet
vs.
9. Alanis Morissette - Ironic

Am I the only one who thinks it is weird that everyone here agrees that it is okay to have no problem with the lack of irony in Ironic? Surely a song from the singer-songwriter genre that uses irony as its selling point can be criticized for not being ironic? I like Morissette a lot, especially here ugly-beautiful way of singing. That combined with a catchy melody still sells the song to me, though she is also lucky to go up to my least favorite song of the week. 3rd Planet is okay, but I feel it just kind of peters out towards the end.

One could argue that "Ironic" could be dealing with cosmic irony, but, either way, no matter how poorly she tackles the subject, the song has a lot of other things going for it. I think our only moderate appreciation for the song shows how much these lyrics affect it; honestly, if Alanis actually wrote a properly ironic song, I'd bet "Ironic" would be in the top 2000 or even higher. As it is, I feel people are embarrassed to admit that they like it, even though it's the biggest commercial hit of a highly regarded album.

Welp...at least everyone was brought together by their mutual dislike for my nominated song this week.

Plus it has an amazing video. Just pointing that out.

And, sorry, Bleu, I really haven't had much time over the past two weeks for this. :(

Excited that Egyptian Shumba and 23 advanced; I thought they would both lose to strong opponents. I'm very surprised that Initials B.B. didn't do better; I have it picked advancing pretty far in the tournament on the thesis that Serge Gainsbourg has a lot of fans among the regulars that vote in this.

I have to say that I'm surprised Initials B.B. did so well against Mala Vida. When I saw the opponent, I was convinced that Gainsbourg will not pass. Whatever, it was my two choices :D
