BleuPanda, "Waitin' Around to Die" seems to be doing well anyway, but as the nominator of this song I suggest that you take his improved 1969 version in the Spotify playlist if it moves to the next round.

I have fixed it for this week as well. That's one thing I didn't have to think about with Best of the B-Sides; since every song was associated with a specific album, I didn't have to worry about finding the right version.

The Verve - Lucky Man
Yo La Tengo - Sugarcube

Kate Bush - Night of the Swallow

Nico - The Fairest of Seasons
Labradford - Lake Speed
This Labradford track is a firm favorite...

TV on the Radio - Dreams

Kanye West - Say You Will
Never thought I'd vote for Kanye - but the competition is pretty weak.

Sleater-Kinney - One Beat
Toughest one of all.

My picks might end up 0 for 4 in this "unranked/bubbling" section, with 2 out and 2 facing AM favorite...

11. The Verve - Lucky Man
vs.
8. Townes Van Zandt - Waitin' Around to Die

9. Yo La Tengo - Sugarcube
vs.
16. The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight

13. Super Furry Animals - Slow Life
vs.
10. Kate Bush - Night of the Swallow

14. Lana Del Rey - Ride
vs.
7. Nico - The Fairest of Seasons

4. LCD Soundsystem - Home
vs.
2. Labradford - Lake Speed
It's not often that I will vote against LCD in a poll, might actually be a first !

6. Belle and Sebastian - Like Dylan in the Movies
vs.
1. TV on the Radio - Dreams

15. Bobby Caldwell - What You Won't Do for Love
vs.
12. Kanye West - Say You Will

5. Sleater-Kinney - One Beat
vs.
3. Low - Lullaby
Though you could say the same of Yo La Tengo above, Sleater-Kinney and Low are impressively consistant bands, releasing great albums one after the other for 20 years without a single dud (well, Low has some weaker stuff but still). Both songs would be in my top 20 of their respective bands, so the choice is tough.

Haha. Sorry! I love how unique Kate Bush’s music is. She’s clearly quite eccentric. Being eccentric is certainly not a requirement for me to appreciate an artist’s music, but her eccentric personality comes across so naturally and feels so genuine that it makes her music very special to me. But for some reason I just don’t connect with “Night of the Swallow”. There are other songs on her album The Dreaming that I prefer, especially “Suspended in Gaffa”.

The 1980s poll has been my favourite poll of all the polls we’ve done on the forum. I think it’s the most vibrant, colourful and quirky decade in music, and while participating in the 80s poll I could definitely hear why you love 1982 as much as you do.

I actually forgot that “Night of the Swallow” (and the album it comes from) was from 1982, so in order to prevent a minor panic attack that I was losing touch with the music of 1982, I listened to my 1982 Spotify playlist over the past couple of days…

(sadly, no Prince on Spotify :-? )

… and was relieved to realize that it is still my favourite year from the 80s too. Phew! (And now that I’ve had my fix of synths, funk and pop - and various other genres from that tremendous year - I’m ready to return to oldies and classical music for the 1900-1959 poll that’s happening at the moment). All’s well that ends well!

I love that 1982 playlist! I'm currently making a huge spreadsheet with all of my song ratings in preparation for a version of the AM Correlations applied to the song list. I'm 9358 ratings deep at the moment, and 1982 has emerged as my favorite year of all so far with 19.819 points, followed by 1983 with 18.884 points. The magic and vibrant color of that time period is just so tasty! :happy-wavemulticolor:

As for Kate Bush, "Night of the Swallow" is actually my favorite from The Dreaming. I like it even more than "Running Up That Hill"! "Suspended in Gaffa" is way up there for me, too.

The Verve - Lucky Man
vs.
Townes Van Zandt - Waitin' Around to Die

I grew up with and loved britpop, but nowadays a lot of it sounds like pretentious fluff to me. The best example is perhaps The Verve and Richard Ashcroft's vocals. Then "Waitin' Around to Die" (my nomination) came on and I realized that Townes Van Zandt's voice is actually not that different. But he is the real deal! Or at least that's how I feel.

I didn't have time to listen to everything now, so votes will come later.

14 The Verve - Lucky Man
vs.
4 Townes Van Zandt - Waitin' Around to Die
"Lucky Man" seemed like your average Britpop but hit on something quite transfixing in its last minute or so. But the Van Zandt cut had me hooked from start to finish.

10 Yo La Tengo - Sugarcube
vs.
13 The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight
I've never not enjoyed Yo La Tengo and was surprised to find I already have two of their albums in my iTunes. Perhaps that'll be the next artist I explore after Cat Power... As much as I enjoyed the personality of the Soft Boys song, I can't really enjoy the singer's voice.

7 Super Furry Animals - Slow Life
vs.
5 Kate Bush - Night of the Swallow
After the last Super Furry Animals track, I will admit I was nervous to hear a seven minute track by them, but found this one oddly charming. But not quite as charming as Kate Bush's mystical madness.

11 Lana Del Rey - Ride
vs.
1 Nico - The Fairest of Seasons
Lana Del Rey's whole shtick feels like a 21st century version of Nico's, but one completely drowned out in production and occasionally cringe-worthy lyrics. It works for some songs (say, "National Anthem") but not here.

2 LCD Soundsystem - Home
vs.
6 Labradford - Lake Speed
Had the tracks been compared on instrumentals alone, the Labradford track would have won easily, but "Home" has some of the best lyrics of a band known for their poetry.

9 Belle and Sebastian - Like Dylan in the Movies
vs.
15 TV on the Radio - Dreams
Two acclaimed artists whose acclaim I've never quite gotten, but I get it a little more with Belle and Sebastian's power-pop a whole lot more.

8 Bobby Caldwell - What You Won't Do for Love
vs.
16 Kanye West - Say You Will
This might be a controversial opinion but I'd put "Say You Will" in strong contention for the worst Kanye song. Meanwhile, the Caldwell song is a delightful piece of blue-eyed soul.

12 Sleater-Kinney - One Beat
vs.
3Low - Lullaby
The Sleater-Kinney song's a blast, but "Lullaby" hits a very specific genre of song I love, one that you can just melt into for a few minutes while guitars and a girl with a pretty voice drone.

This week is a mix of songs I really love (1-5 are all well inside my top 500) and songs I don't care much about.

15. The Verve - Lucky Man
vs.
2. Townes Van Zandt - Waitin' Around to Die

14. Yo La Tengo - Sugarcube
vs.
16. The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight

11. Super Furry Animals - Slow Life
vs.
12. Kate Bush - Night of the Swallow

I love Kate, but have never gotten into "The Dreaming".

10. Lana Del Rey - Ride
vs.
8. Nico - The Fairest of Seasons

7. LCD Soundsystem - Home
vs.
9. Labradford - Lake Speed

5. Belle and Sebastian - Like Dylan in the Movies
vs.
13. TV on the Radio - Dreams

1. Bobby Caldwell - What You Won't Do for Love
vs.
4. Kanye West - Say You Will

Completely opposite to acroamor "Say You Will" is my favorite Kanye song. But it's up against one of my two nominations this week. Yes, I like it smooth!

6. Sleater-Kinney - One Beat
vs.
3. Low - Lullaby

Great week!

10. The Verve - Lucky Man
vs.
5. Townes Van Zandt - Waitin' Around to Die

I like The Verve, but they have much better songs. In fact, Lucky Man always struck me as one of those songs were a capable band is just doing their thing and not more. Waitin' Around to Die has much more personality, I really need to start to listen to Townes Van Zandt more.

9. Yo La Tengo - Sugarcube
vs.
7. The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight

I liked Sugarcube more than I usually like Yo La Tengo, but there is a mysterious quality to Underwater Moonlight, mainly thanks to the lyrics, that elevates that to a higher plane.

15. Super Furry Animals - Slow Life
vs.
4. Kate Bush - Night of the Swallow

Slow Life is sometimes wonderful and sometimes frustrating. That makes it hard to embrace it, though I appreciate the effort. Super Furry Animals always would have a hard task against Kate Bush, who can do very little wrong with me and certainly not with Night of the Swallow.

2. Lana Del Rey - Ride
vs.
3. Nico - The Fairest of Seasons

Damn, not fair! These two are great! What I like about this match-up is that it highlights a similarity between Lana Del Rey and Nico I never thought of before. Both songs deserve a couple of more rounds if you ask me. I feel bad voting against Nico as she is a little more unique, but there is something about Del Rey that gets to me in a special way.

6. LCD Soundsystem - Home
vs.
13. Labradford - Lake Speed

One of the more easy match-ups. There is a lot to commend the Labradford track for and I do like it, but LDC Soundsystem is clearly playing on a higher playground for me.

8. Belle and Sebastian - Like Dylan in the Movies
vs.
14. TV on the Radio - Dreams

Though both bands don't belong to the top of top for me as they do to others they both have good works and show it here.

11. Bobby Caldwell - What You Won't Do for Love
vs.
16. Kanye West - Say You Will

Say You Will is one of the few tracks I actively disliked during this game. Everything about it strikes me as completely fake. Even the background choral can't lift this up. I know this is not a common opinion anymore, but I feel that the combination of soul and auto-tune are a contradiction in terms and instead of elevating the emotions it annihilates them. Ironically, it is up against a smooth soul track that only seems better, because Caldwell makes it sounds so effortless compared to all the studio trickery that West needs to achieve something he doesn't seem capable of.

1. Sleater-Kinney - One Beat
vs.
10. Low - Lullaby

One Beat is one of my favorite songs ever, by one of my favorite bands. It has wonderful rhythm that seems pounding as well as disruptive, which goes well with the lyrics and the screaming, passionate vocals by the two lead singers, who alternate among themselves in a way that elevates the rhythm. This is how I like rock the most. Kind of funny to set this blast of furious power against a song actually named Lullaby from a band named Low. I do like that song, but winning this for me was always going to be a monumental task.

Your criticism of the music technically is completely valid, but I feel like Kanye's emotions are real. He lost his mother and broke up with his girlfriend during the time this was made. So like I do believe he tries to put his heart and soul into this song. Had some help from other writers though, like Kid Cudi.

Yeah, I should add that it I didn't mean to suggest that Kanye West's feelings are fake, which would be ridiculous on my part. It's just that I feel this approach really complements Kanye's talents. It's never his vocals that gives off the most emotion anyway.
A good friend of mine who is also into music actually has 808s & Heartbreak as his favorite album (as well as Kanye as his favorite artist) and has told me a couple of months ago why he thought it was such a huge achievement and probably the most influential album of the last 10 years, but it just isn't something that works or even appeals to me. But I'm clearly in the minority here.

I came latter at the nomination phase and only chose 3 songs. Fortunately, 2 of them are still alive!
