Individual Artist Poll: Bob Dylan

Post by BleuPanda »

For Bob Dylan, I will do a top x song list (number dependent on how many songs pass a certain threshold of points), along with however many albums get at least a single vote. Everyone should vote in this topic up to their top 25 songs and top 10 albums (note that you can choose to vote for less songs down to a minimum of 15, but you must vote for exactly 10 albums). These numbers might change depending on the artist.

The Deadline will be September 30th, 2016. The results will be shared at the beginning of October. Whether or not the results have been revealed, the next artist poll will be posted on October 1st; next time will be The Rolling Stones, unless someone argues otherwise (we will be following the order of the most recent artist poll: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3966&start=550#p58413)

If you change your list, please post it in a new post (otherwise I might miss it).

General rules:
1. Only include songs with the artist/group featured in the primary credit (i.e. Under Pressure is alright for Bowie, but not Reflektor)
2. Studio and live albums are eligible, greatest hits are not; compilations of earlier work that went unreleased such as The Velvet Underground's V.U. are eligible

Point distribution:
Albums:
1. 50 points
2. 37
3. 28
4. 22
5. 18

Re: Individual Artist Poll: Bob Dylan

Post by Honorio »

Dylan has one of the largest discographies of the acclaimed artists (only surpassed by Miles Davis, James Brown and –almost– Prince off the AM Top 50 artists), with 37 studio albums, 6 live albums and 12 albums on the "bootleg series." This poll has been an excellent opportunity to listen to the albums I never listened before (mostly material released between 1984-1988, 1990-1995 and 2008-2014). I decided to do a double ranking of albums, one for the whole material and another for the 37 studio albums. But don't worry, BleuPanda, the Top 10 is the same on both lists.

Albums:

1. Blonde on Blonde (1966, my #3 album of all time)
Dylan not abandoned the automatic poetry of his previous two albums but he pointed toward more personal matters, with Sarah Lowndes, Edie Sedgwick and Joan Baez as (unwanted) subjects. The lyrics were cryptic and the music was messy but this was not only part of the charm but maybe its main appeal. He tried to find a unique sound equidistant from Pop-Rock and Roots-music and he widely succeeded. In Dylan's own words: "The closest I ever got to the sound I hear in my mind was on individual bands in the "Blonde on Blonde" album. It's that thin, that wild mercury sound. It's metallic and bright gold, with whatever that conjures up. That's my particular sound."

2. The Times They Are A-Changin' (1964, #56)
Living in a political world. An angry young Dylan (with a sullen look in the album cover) took no prisoners here, he charged against war lords, judges, government or racism. Not forgetting sublime lost-love songs ("Boots of Spanish Leather") or defiant attitude (the title song). The peak of the political Bob (and his swan song, soon he was going to show us his "Another Side").

3. Bringing It All Back Home (1965, #110)
"Dylan has spent his entire career out of step with the rest of us, either prophetically ahead or anachronistically behind" (Matt Melis for Consequence of Sound). And Dylan was so ahead in 1965 that changed the face of Pop music with the "Cutting Edge" trilogy that began with this "Bringing It All Back Home." An acoustic side and an electric side, both biting, bright and new.

4. Highway 61 Revisited (1965, #134)
Miss Lonely, Mr. Jones, the one-eyed midget, Queen Jane, Louie the King, sweet Melinda and Dr. Filth marching on a surreal parade along Desolation Row.

5. Desire (1976, #206)
The sound of Rolling Thunder, a tumultuous sound with a special prominence of two talented ladies, Emmylou Harris and Scarlet Rivera.

6. Blood on the Tracks (1975)
7. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963)
8. Oh Mercy (1989)
9. Nashville Skyline (1969)
10. Love and Theft (2001)

11. Time Out of Mind (1997)

For the songs list this time I simply couldn't narrow it down to a Top 100, so I decided to post a Top 200. About the versions I'm content with the first released version except in two cases, I prefer the 1976 live version of "One Too Many Mornings" and the Basement Tapes version (recorded in 1967 but first released in 1991) of "I Shall Be Released." Anyway none of them are on my Top 25. Note: I haven't included the Traveling Willburys albums on the albums list (I guess they're not eligible) but a couple of songs by the band (written and sung by Dylan) found their way to the songs list.

Songs:

1. Like a Rolling Stone (1965, my #1 song of all time)
Bruce Springsteen once described the drum hit at the beginning of "Like a Rolling Stone" like the "snare shot that sounded like somebody’d kicked open the door to your mind." And it's not an exaggeration from a crazy fan (Springsteen is undoubtedly one of them), this snare shot opened a lot of doors: it introduced Folk into Rock (and Rock into Folk), it introduced literature and poetry into Pop lyrics and it introduced adulthood complexities into a mostly teenager style. Rock music was only eleven years-old at the time but with that drum hit it suddenly reached the age of majority. With no turning back. How does it feel?

2. Just Like a Woman (1966, #65)
It's unclear who was the woman who "breaks like a little girl." Initially it seems (again) Edie Sedgwick "with her fog, her amphetamines and her pearls" but when Dylan asks her to "please don't let on that you knew me when I was hungry and it was your world" it seems to address Joan Baez, already an established name on the Folk scene when they met. Many songs on "Blonde on Blonde" melted different real female characters into one to illustrate the complex relationships of Dylan had then.

3. The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll (1964, #227)
It's easy to imagine an angry young Dylan getting sick after reading in the newspapers the event that inspired this song and willing to pour his rage into words and music. Nowadays we have on the newspapers many news able to make us sick but not many singer-songwriters with the talent to portrait injustice so accurately and the… balls to hit some people's raw nerves. Come on, young songwriters, pick up your machines-to-kill-fascists and get into the battlefield! We are waiting for you!

4. Workingman Blues #2 (2006, #248)
A gem, among many others, from the long and fertile Dylan twilight period, a sequel better than the (Merle Haggard's) first.

5. Sara (1976)
For sentimental reasons. For me (the first Dylan single I ever bought) and for Dylan (his final desperate plea to Sara).

6. A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (1963)
7. Knockin' on Heaven's Door (1973)
8. Hurricane (1975)
9. Desolation Row (1965)
10. Not Dark Yet (1997)
11. Don't Think Twice It's Alright (1963)
12. All Along the Watchtower (1967)
13. Subterranean Homesick Blues (1965)
14. My Back Pages (1964)
15. Mississippi (2001)
16. One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later) (1966)
17. Tangled Up in Blue (1975)

Oddly enough, I only really like 2 Dylan albums and 11 songs... I am not going to submit a list this month.

Is there any way you'd consider extending the deadline? I would love to get a few more weeks to dig deeper into Dylan's back catalog, and judging from the relatively small number of lists delivered so far, I wonder if others are feeling the same way. Dylan's relevant discography is at least twice as large as most of the other top artists, so it seems like he could have more than a month.

So we can actually relax and enjoy the classics a few more times? Excellent, I've spend so much time over the last few weeks trudging through his eighties and early ninties records that I was fearing I'd left too little time to cover the later entries or revisit the big hitters of the sixties and seventies again.

I'm OK with extending the deadline, not for expanding my own list (it's quite long already) but for dedicating October to the 1900-1959 Poll and not to the Stones...

I'm hoping that we run through the top 10 finalists of our Artist poll, maybe more. I'm fine with stretching Dylan out (and some other musicians?) as long as it's essentially good for the health of the Individual Artist Poll.

I think it might get easier when we get to artists with smaller discographies. I expect low turnout specifically for Dylan because some people will feel overwhelmed when they see the size of his acclaimed albums. For smaller artists, it's easier to get through their entire discography in a short time. For example, you can get through Joy Division's major works in a few hours, and I'd expect more participation due to that fact.

It would be great if this is extended another month. I've been busy with the 1900-1959 poll, but I'll still probably be able to post a Dylan songs list by the end of the month.

Unfortunately, for the next couple of artists, I probably won't post albums lists. There are simply too many Dylan albums I haven't heard which may rank in my Top 10 if I did. As for the Stones, I may be the only one on the forum who's not a big fan of most of their albums. :|

Nice to see this gets postponed. Dylan is my favourite artist, so I really wanted to make the lists, but couldn't find time before my 3 week vacation and hoped to rush one in today (if I wasn't too late). Now I can take some time to do it well. Maybe two months is an ideal time for this anyway; even with artist with shorter discographies it still takes some time to let everything sink in, which is why I haven't posted in any other Individual Artist polls.

Re: Individual Artist Poll: Bob Dylan

Post by Rob »

I skip the Bootleg series for now. They are kind of hard to place, though many are essential.

Albums:
1. Bringing It All Back Home
Whether this is the album in which Dylan brings it all back home might be up for debate, but surely it is the one in which everything comes together. It contains social criticism (It’s All Right Ma, (I’m Only Bleeding)), prophetic visions (Gates of Eden), songs of love gained (Love Minus Zero/ No Limit), songs of love lost (It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue), absurd tales (Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream), streams of consciousness (Subterranean Homesick Blues), gentle mood ballads (Mr. Tambourine Man) and unadulterated rage (Maggie’s Farm). Every song on this album not only works, but I’d argue that 9 out 11 of them are masterpieces. The two remaining tracks are still gems. To top it off, it also combines acoustic Dylan with electric Dylan and delivers the best of both these modes. Choosing a number one album of your favourite artist might be difficult, but this one encapsulates most completely why I love Dylan.

2. Another Side of Bob Dylan
Picking a second favourite album is harder than spot 1. I go with this unorthodox choice. Another Side is not exactly underrated, because every Dylan fan seems to love it. It just happens to score lower than pretty much any other of his sixties albums, except the debut. This is probably because it is the one that, despite the title, was the least innovative. It felt like Freewheelin’ part two. Still, for a long time this was my favourite Dylan album. The reason is that like Bringing It All Back Home it shows the biggest range of Dylan. He can alternately have fun, be angry and be sad. Starting from Highway 61 Revisited Dylan usually chose a more sustained mood (The Times They Are A-Changin’ pioneered this), but at the start of his career he was exploring every nook and cranny his music allowed him and the results were frequently magic. This album is not as consistently amazing as Bringing It All Back Home, but I love the investigative spirit that this one has.

3. Highway 61 Revisited
Having gone full electric Dylan found out what pure backlash meant. This album is the result. It is very angry, but in a less distant way than The Times They Are A-Changin’. Highway 61 Revisited is not known as a protest album, yet it seems that this is the one album where Dylan wants to take on the whole world. For personal reasons. What could have been a bitter album (it still is somewhat) is saved by a sound that rocks like hell, is filled with surprising humour (I love Dylan surrealism) and by simply containing many of the best songs Dylan ever wrote. Besides, it helps that all allusions Dylan made were probably too vague to be fully understood. It is that vagueness that actually makes it a universal masterpiece, instead of a petty rant.

4. The Basement Tapes
One of the most original albums ever made, even in Dylan’s catalogue. I mean, what album sounds like this? The basement sound on itself is a novelty, but a novelty that comes alive in the homegrown, wacky lyrics of most of the songs. If previously Dylan seemed to almost lose his head in the madness of his life, this is the place where he found back the joy in making music and in writing lyrics. That it all frequently sounds silly makes it all the more fun. The most shamelessly enjoyable of Dylan’s albums, filled with love for music. Even the Band-only cuts that Robbie Robinson forced on there can’t take the joy away from the whole package. The more complete Bootleg Series version is also a must, but I still put this one on more, because it works better in the smaller dose (and yes, I know it is a double album).

5. Time Out of Mind
Believe it or not, but this was the first Dylan album I heard, after working my way through the compilation The Essential Bob Dylan. I immediately fell in love with it. This is actually one of the least varied of all Dylan’s album, almost like a mood piece. Yet this doesn’t hamper it, but makes it all the more special. Daniel Lanois has sometimes been criticized about the production and Dylan himself was unsatisfied with the sound, saying it was far less up-tempo and rocking than he wanted. Whatever, that specific sound this album has, combined with the extreme melancholy or plain sadness of the lyrics are what make this one of my favourite night-time albums ever.

6. The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan
Again I get back to youthful Dylan, whose playfulness and experimentation with lyrics never gets old for me. This is the first time we see him in full form. Despite A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall, Masters of War and of course Blowin’ in the Wind this is not just a protest album. Gems like I Shall Be Free, Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right and his cover of Corrina, Corrina make this a full-fledged album with many sides to it. Above all, you can just feel that spark of discovery sending jolts through your body.

7. Blonde on Blonde
In a rich discography as this one it is hard to speak about a Big One, but there seems to be a consensus that Blonde on Blonde is it. It’s easy to see why. Not only was it a double album in a time in which this was a rare thing, especially in pop and rock, but above all there is great poetic ambition in the lyrics and a musical diversity unmatched in Dylan’s further output. It is a rather difficult album, clearly fuelled by confusion, anger and despair. The album cover seemed to correctly predict its content. If it seems to be rather low on my list, I should add that the numbers 2 to 8 are almost a tie. I agree it is a masterpiece, with many of Dylan’s best songs and one of his most complete statements.

8. Blood on the Tracks
Now here is an album on which every song works. It is also the most thematically unified album of Dylan’s whole career. If it wasn’t for Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts in the middle (a very welcome addition, I should add) it would have been only songs about Dylan’s failed marriage. Yet, this isn’t exactly an Adele album, where Dylan just sounds sad from one song to the next. Instead, he captures every side of feeling heartbroken. From confusion (Tangled Up in Blue), sadness (If You See Her, Say Hello), anger (Idiot Wind) and even a sort of fear (Shelter from the Storm), Dylan pours everything in alternately hard poetry and extreme directness. Therefore, it becomes a whirlwind of emotions. It might not be his most inventive album, but you can feel how close to his heart it is.

9. Love and Theft
This one took a while to grow on me. At first it didn’t seem to have quite the heft or depth that the best Dylan albums have. Yet over time I came to love just that. This is his most playful album since The Basement Tapes. Love and Theft is no less than a love letter to his favourite music and with perhaps the greatest backing band since The Band he just riffs off the best rock and blues lines without a care in the world. Pure fun.

10. John Wesley Harding
What a weird album this is. It’s full of stories that feel at least a hundred years old and many seem to lack a context. They are all rather short too. What is it that Dylan aimed for exactly? I feel he tried to capture a feeling of bygone times when the world seemed more mystical and mysterious. Except the two love songs that close the album this feels like a collection of forgotten tales from the heartlands of America. It’s short, but still something to get lost in.

I feel very sorry for not including Tempest. I went back and forth between that one and John Wesley Harding for the tenth place. I felt John Wesley Harding captured something that other Dylan albums didn’t, so that gave the advantage to John Wesley Harding. The ten albums above along with Tempest are the 11 Dylan albums I see as great masterpieces. Yes, 11 masterpieces: that’s how you become my favourite artist.

There is a lot of great other work too, even if they aren’t quite masterpieces. Oh Mercy almost rivals Time Out of Mind as a great mood piece, but is just less consistently great. Dylan’s eponymous debut is a wonderful product of a young man just being happy to be recording. The Times They Are A-Changin’ contains some of the best protest songs ever made, but gets a bit tedious here and there. Nashville Skyline is also great fun, but just too slight to be a masterpiece. This also goes for New Morning, although that one if even more slight than Nashville Skyline. Together Through Life is even lesser, but there is a fun in the musicianship that reminds me of Love and Theft. Sadly, it just doesn’t have quite the great imagery and lyrical depth as that one. I also want to say some nice words about Slow Train Coming. The religious content annoys me frequently, but the singing is spirited and the music inspired. Almost all the Bootleg Series albums are more than worth your while, but as I said, they are too hard to place in a list like this.

Despite being my favourite artist I don’t like all his acclaimed albums. Many of them are uneven. Planet Waves, Infidels and Street-Legal all contain brilliant material, but have too many minor or even bad songs to work for me as complete albums. Modern Times has three brilliant tracks (Ain’t Talking, Working Man Blues#2 and Thunder on the Mountain), but drags in all the other songs and therefore rarely feels essential. I don’t quite get its big praise. The Sinatra cover albums are okay I guess, but personally I have no need for them. Now the Christmas album, I like that for what it is, but nothing more.

What about Desire? That’s a case on itself. It is frequently a masterpiece. Most songs I enjoy. But the lesser songs are really confused and Joey is one of the very worst things Dylan ever did. And it’s ten minutes long and slapped right in the middle of the album. I have no idea where I could possibly rank Desire in Dylan’s album list. It’s a disaster-masterpiece hybrid all of its own.

No time to write extensively about my favourite songs, but here is my top 25:

1. Like a Rolling Stone
2. Desolation Row
3. It’s All Right Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)

So, for the Rolling Stones -- if we have a 1 month poll, their new album will come out 2 days after the poll. (Go to 2 months? Go to Springsteen?)

Unless someone wants me to hold (if you're almost ready with a list and forgot, etc.), please tell me now. I just finished adding up the albums and am going to add up the songs soon. If no one says anything before I finish, I will consider this closed as soon as I finish adding everything up. If you want an extra couple days, just say so.

I probably won't be presenting this until the weekend; I'm almost done adding up the song lists, but I'll be busy this evening and tomorrow. You can still sneak in a vote in either poll if you want.
