Individual Artist Poll: Bruce Springsteen

Post by BleuPanda »

For Bruce Springsteen, I will do a top x song list (number dependent on how many songs pass a certain threshold of points), along with however many albums get at least a single vote. Everyone should vote in this topic up to their top 25 songs and top 10 albums (note that you can choose to vote for less songs down to a minimum of 15 and less albums down to a minimum of 7). These numbers will change depending on the artist.

The Deadline will be November 30th, 2016. The results will be shared at the beginning of December. Whether or not the results have been revealed, the next artist poll will be posted on December 1st; next time will be The Rolling Stones, unless someone argues otherwise (we will be following the order of the most recent artist poll: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3966&start=550#p58413)

If you change your list, please post it in a new post (otherwise I might miss it).

General rules:
1. Only include songs with the artist/group featured in the primary credit (i.e. Under Pressure is alright for Bowie, but not Reflektor)
2. Studio and live albums are eligible, greatest hits are not; compilations of earlier work that went unreleased such as The Velvet Underground's V.U. are eligible

Point distribution:
Albums:
1. 50 points
2. 37
3. 28
4. 22
5. 18

I used to think that Springsteen's classic 70s albums had too much testosterone and not enough charm, but I'm changing my mind about them. Born to Run in particular keeps growing on me with each listen. But I still think that two of his 80s classics are his best. And I obviously feel that We Shall Overome: The Seeger Sessions is underrated. It might not be my absolute favourite folk album, and although it loses a bit of steam towards the end it is definitely my favourite energetic folk album.

Albums
1. Born in the U.S.A.
2. Nebraska
3. Born to Run
4. We Shall Overome: The Seeger Sessions
5. Darkness on the Edge of Town
6. Magic
7. The River
8. The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle
9. The Ghost of Tom Joad
10. Tunnel of Love

Songs
1. Born to Run
2. O Mary Don't You Weep
3. I'm on Fire
4. Dancing in the Dark
5. Born in the U.S.A.
6. Radio Nowhere
7. Bobby Jean
8. Thunder Road
9. Candy's Room
10. Atlantic City
11. Hungry Heart
12. Livin' in the Future
13. Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out
14. Downbound Train
15. Mansion on the Hill
16. Streets of Philadelphia
17. New York City Serenade
18. The Ghost of Tom Joad
19. The River
20. Badlands
21. Jacob's Ladder
22. State Trooper
23. John Henry
24. Nebraska
25. Racing in the Street

...will keep us together.

Halfway through the month...I fear Springsteen could be our least popular artist to cover. While he's obviously well-respected, I feel like few people have actually engaged with his large body of work compared to the other mega-artists. I'm hoping things shift to a higher number once we get to artists whose discography are small enough to explore in an afternoon; that should be less intimidating.

I have listened to a lot of Springsteen over the years and definitely want to make a list, but I really have to reacquaint myself with much of his post 80's-output. Sadly, various other musical interests keep me from doing so. I hope to get around it next week.

Honorio requested I wait for him, so this will be open until he submits his list, if that is after the deadline. I will still post the Leonard Cohen topic on December 1st. If anyone else needs an extension, just let me know.

This last month has really had me delve and re-evaluate Springsteen's discography more than I originally planned to happen.
Feeling satisfied with these results.

Edit: I wasn't going to post the entirety of both lists as everyone above me had stuck strictly to ten albums and twenty-five songs or less. Honorio's post below has inspired me to post the entire lot.

01| Born to Run
02| Born in the U.S.A.
03| The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle
04| Darkness on the Edge of Town
05| Nebraska
06| Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.
07| The River
08| Tunnel of Love
09| We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions
10| The Rising

11| Devils & Dust
12| Magic
13| Wrecking Ball
14| High Hopes
15| Lucky Town
16| The Ghost of Tom Joad
17| Working on a Dream
18| Human Touch

Essentially the last day; I'll be keeping this open until Honorio posts and whenever I finish adding everything together. So you likely have a few more days, but it's better to get it done before these hard deadlines happen.

Re: Individual Artist Poll: Bruce Springsteen

Post by Honorio »

Sorry, BleuPanda, my computer broke down on Friday and only today it got fixed. Anyway I finally managed to sent my list just before the deadline.
I haven't included live albums but some live songs may pop on the song list.

Albums:

1. Born to Run (1975, my #18 album of all time)
Springsteen wanted his album to sound like “Roy Orbison singing Bob Dylan produced by Phil Spector”. And he succeeded, the wall of sound was there thanks to Jon Landau and a renewed E-Street Band, the lyrics were as rich as the Dylan ones and the dramatic deliverance owed some debts to Roy Orbison. But make no mistake here, the final results were 100% Springsteen.

2. The River (1980, #49)
The splendid double album of Springsteen is also one of his more personal efforts, dealing with the conflictive relationship with his father on "Independence Day" and reflecting the heartbreaking but real story of his sister and his brother-in-law on the title track. Never before and after his scenes of broken heroes were so real. Is a dream a lie if it don't come true?

3. Nebraska (1982, #121)
Portraits of crime and desperation, nude and chilling songs, a dark album whose stature is always getting bigger and bigger.

4. Born in the U.S.A. (1984)
Bruce as the hit machine or the admirable lesson of how to make music for the masses without losing integrity and spark.

5. Darkness on the Edge of Town (1978)
Springsteen emerged from his period in the wilderness with the album that truly crystallized the sound of the E Street Band.

6. The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle (1973)
7. The Ghost of Tom Joad (1995)
8. The Rising (2002)
9. We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions (2006)
10. Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. (1973)

11. Tracks (1998)
12. Tunnel of Love (1987)
13. Wrecking Ball (2012)
14. Magic (2007)
15. The Promise (2010)
16. Devils & Dust (2005)
17. Lucky Town (1992)
18. High Hopes (2014)
19. Working on a Dream (2009)
20. Human Touch (1992)

And now the songs, a Top 100. On some cases you will find two different release dates, the first one is the first official release and the second one is the release date of the version I choose for my Spotify list (usually the full studio version).

Songs:

1. Born to Run (1975, my #5 song of all time)
Cars and girls. "Chrome wheeled, fuel injected" cars (or motorcycles, I don't mind). Girls that "comb their hair in rear-view mirrors." Boys that "try to look so hard." Maybe these backstreet Romeo and Juliet stories of the first Springsteen albums only happened in a parallel universe but introduced an epic tone in rock music almost unheard previously (at least in such heights) and almost unreachable after, even by Springsteen himself. Some things hurt more much more than cars and girls? Really?

2. The River (1980, #60)
The real story of Springsteen sister told from the point of view of his brother-in-law exemplifies the broken dreams of a whole generation, the working-class young people growing up on the 70s just to face the big difference between their dreams and their reality. "All the things that seemed so important / well, mister, they vanished right into the air." I know, the river is dry.

3. Thunder Road (1975)
Roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair. Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere. We got one last chance to make it real, to trade in these wings on some wheels. Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tracks. Oh oh, come take my hand, we're riding out tonight to case the promised land. Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road.

4. Bobby Jean (1984)
I like my sentimental Bruce. An ode to a lost friend (not clear if fictitious or real, if male or female) that's really touching.

5. Jungleland (1975)
Yes, a third song from "Born to Run" on my Top 5. A 10-minutes epic, the peak of both Roy Bittan and Clarence Clemons.

6. Racing in the Street (1978)
7. Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) (1973)
8. Candy's Room (1978)
9. Stolen Car (1980)
10. Because the Night (1986/2010)

Re: Individual Artist Poll: Bruce Springsteen

It's still 30 November here. I hope it still counts, even though Honorio posted.

I wanted to take the time to listen to Bruce Springsteen's complete output, but a lot of other music came between it. I still missed the live albums, archival work like Tracks and The Promise, as well as High Hopes. Still, the listening I got in was not in vain, if only because of my new respect for The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle. I listened to it once years ago and for some reason disliked it enormously and never gave it another shot. Now I did and it turns out it is a very good album.

Also, no time for further comments, except that Wrecking Ball is really under-appreciated. It may not be the masterpiece Rolling Stones see in it, but the backlash it received almost because of it is ridiculous.

Top 10 albums:
1. Darkness on the Edge of Town
2. Nebraska
3. Born to Run
4. Born in the U.S.A.
5. We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions
6. The River
7. The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle
8. Wrecking Ball
9. The Ghost of Tom Joad
10. Tunnel of Love

5. Dancing in the Dark
6. Streets of Philadelphia
7. American Skin (41 Shots)

People tend to hate Wrecking Ball? Can't claim to speak for everyone here who doesn't have it in their top ten but it's not that it's a bad album - it's actually pretty good. It's just that Springsteen made ten or so albums that are even better to my ears.

Alright, I have finished adding all the lists together. Number 50 this time only has 30 points; should I start at #50 like usual, or make this a top 40 (even number 40 only has 47 points)?

I'm currently working on adding other information (years, AMF rank, etc), so if you're in the middle of working on a list and haven't yet told me, you will want to submit soon (or, you know, just message me).
