Ellington

Although I do recognize the great coincidence of this being a King vs. a Duke

My vote goes to the album I nominated, Red. Outside of "Providence", the album is an unstoppable force, with every note, every guitar note being more massive than the last.

King Crimson - Red vs. Duke Ellington - Masterpieces By Ellington

I have a kind of irrational dislike for King Crimson cos it's so highly rated on RYM, IMO overrated. Red is the only King Crimson album I have on my all-time list though. So it's an okay winner in my book. Duke Ellington is just not my thing.

Hi Brad, thank you very much for another wonderful edition of MAA, the MAA7. This time I've been less active than in the previous edition, with less comments and stats (I tried to compensate including pictures of the ladies nominated) but I enjoyed the game even more than in previous editions. Now, as I did last year, my homage to the host. I tried to match the quotes you include every week with the songs (thanks to the Internet, of course, by memory I could only recognize one third or less). Looking at the list this is fantastic collection of quotes and a fantastic collection of songs. Please tell me in which ones I chose a wrong option, being the wrong song (there are a lot of songs called "Shake It Up" for instance) or the wrong version (I'm not sure if you wanted to point at the Stones or at Mississippi Fred McDowell with "You Gotta Move"). Many thanks, Brad!

1.1 Let's Get This Party Started Right! (Justice featuring Uffie | Tthhee Ppaarrttyy | 2007)
1.3 Go back to those Gold Soundz! (Pavement | Gold Soundz | 1994)
1.4 I'll drink my beer in a tavern / sing a little bit of these working man blues! (Merle Haggard | Workin' Man Blues | 1969)
1.5 Who Loves The Sun? (The Velvet Underground | Who Loves the Sun | 1970)
1.6 Here comes two of you, which one will you chose? (The Velvet Underground | Beginning to See the Light | 1969)
1.7 Party Up! (DMX | Party Up (Up in Here) | 1999)
1.8 Tally-Ho! (The Clean | Tally Ho! | 1981)
1.9 Let all the children boogie! (David Bowie | Starman | 1972)
1.10 Yes We Have No Bananas! (Billy Jones | Yes! We Have No Bananas | 1923)
1.11 Shake It Up! (The Cars | Shake It Up | 1981)
1.12 Let's Groove! (Earth, Wind & Fire | Let's Groove | 1981)
1.13 Take Five! (Dave Brubeck Quartet | Take Five | 1959)
1.14 You ring the bell / Bim bam! / You shout and you yell / Hi ho ho! (Björk | It's Oh So Quiet | 1995)
1.15 Straighten Up And Fly Right! (The King Cole Trio | Straighten Up And Fly Right | 1943)
1.16 Elevate Me Later! (Pavement | Elevate Me Later | 1994)
2.1 Roll 'Em Pete! (Joe Turner and Pete Johnson | Roll 'Em Pete | 1938)
2.2 Come along if you care, / Come along if you dare! (The Amboy Dukes | Journey to the Center of the Mind | 1968)
2.3 Nothing to get Hung About! (The Beatles | Strawberry Fields Forever | 1967)
2.4 Come out of the cupboard, you boys and girls! (The Clash | London Calling | 1979)
2.5 I do appreciate you being 'round! (The Beatles | Help! | 1965)
2.6 You Gotta Move! (Fred McDowell | You Got to Move | 1966)
2.7 And for Heaven's sake, don't you be so sad! (Television | Marquee Moon | 1977)
2.8 Come with me / And you'll be / In a world of pure imagination (Gene Wilder | Pure Imagination | 1971)
3.1 Let's build a car! (Swell Maps | Let's Build a Car | 1979)

3.3 Don't touch my bags if you please mister customs man (Arlo Guthrie | Coming Into Los Angeles | 1969)
3.4 Where have all the good times gone? (The Kinks | Where Have All the Good Times Gone | 1965)
4.1 Who Knows Where the Time Goes? (Fairport Covention | Who Knows Where the Time Goes? | 1969)
4.2 Salvation a la mode and / A cup of tea (Jethro Tull | Aqualung | 1971)
Quarter Finals My body stunk but I kept my funk! (Rod Stewart | Every Picture Tells a Story | 1971)
Semi-Finals We mean it man! (Sex Pistols | God Save the Queen | 1977)
Finals Do it 'til you're satisfied (Whatever it is) (B.T. Express | Do It ('Til You're Satisfied) | 1974)

And now my votes… I'm not going to add arguments to my votes (I just got a writing spree on semifinals). I'll just say that I'm going to vote against my own nomination. I was the one who nominated Ellington and I'm glad to see that it finally got to the finals. But if I go to my all-time list I see that I got "Red" at #80 and "Masterpieces by Ellington" at #125. In fact I nominated "Red" two years ago, in MAA5, but it lost (to my consternation) on Round 1 to The Notwist's "Neon Golden." So, even if my own nomination finally loses the final I'll be more than happy. So…
King Crimson - Red (1974) vs. Duke Ellington and His Orchestra - Masterpieces by Ellington (1951)

P.S. Knowing that I'm sticking my nose in other people's business (and hoping not to offend anyone) I can't help to make a request to our beloved American members of the Acclaimed Music Forum. You can vote for King Crimson or for Duke Ellington. But please don't vote for Donald Trump. Please…

It's indeed getting scary over here, Honorio (and Dan, who also wrote a great post in the Music of 2000 thread yesterday). The fanatical cult mentality has been terrifying, and it feels like Trump lifted a rock and united/gave voice to the most racist, sexist, hateful people in the country. No matter what he says or does, his supporters continue to make excuses for him (usually just by saying Hillary is even worse; which, if you make a list of all their transgressions, simply isn't true). I just have this recurring nightmare of him winning, getting impeached (inevitably, given his track record), and instead of stepping down (he's already said he may not accept the election results if he loses, since everything is "rigged" against him), inciting his flock (most of which are armed to the teeth anyway) to rise up and support him against the "establishment" who unjustly wants him removed. Needless to say, I haven't been sleeping well lately. (Thankfully, I've had the 1900-1959 poll to keep me preoccupied!)

Sorry, Brad, for the rant. I don't mean to distract from the great job you've done with yet another outstanding MAA. Thanks so much for hosting this every year - I'm already looking forward to MAA 8!

I wasn't gonna comment, but isn't it more likely Hillary's gonna get impeached, with all this FBI investigating her and stuff? They have two separate investigations, her use of a private server and the Clinton Foundation.

But I guess she can pardon herself, so there's that.

Not that I think Trump's so great, really. That tape really turned me off and also some other stuff.

Edit: Yeah, Listyguy is right. I don't wanna start an argument. Clinton would be fine. I'm sorry.

Edit: I wouldn't be opposed to a General Discussion thread. Idk if I would post in that thread, but in the case I did, it would be in a civil manner.

I'll be starting the BMAA2017 nom thread in early December then listening/voting will go through January.

Last year there was some eligibility controversy, should we just go with top 75 Megacritic or do we want to wait for year end lists to start nominating?

But, you can let us know if you have started such a political conversation in the general discussion thread, so that we can join in there.

I plan to start such a discussion shortly.

Guys - Anyone mind if I push this off another couple hours? As noted, it is election day here in the U.S. and things are a bit zany, my schedule included... I think it'll be several hours until I can get around to this, so I'm just going to say you can continue voting until 6pm EST this evening, which is a little less than 9 hours from now.

Sorry for the delay!

My thanks to YOU, Honorio. Once again you surprised me with your summation of my somewhat random song titles and quotes! And I believe you hit every one correctly. I'm sure I had the Stones in mind for "You Gotta Move" and The Cars for "Shake It Up"... looking at all of these now, I plainly had forgotten which I had used, much less why. I know some of them are appropriate to our cause, but many of the lines are just favorites of mine - "My body stunk but I kept my funk" earning top marks; a great line, and how I felt for a couple days following surgery (all better now!).

Thanks again - glad someone noticed!
