Unacclaimed IV Group Stage, Week 6

Post by whuntva »

The game will continue. We may or may not have a tie going on but it will continue alongside the current week of voting.

Rank songs from 1-4 with top song receiving 4 points, bottom receiving 1 point. Ties are broken by the number of #1 votes. Top TWO songs advance.

Voting ends 11/13 at 11:59 forum time.

And as a small addendum, if you would like to add to or in any way change your ballot, please make a followup post instead of modifying the original. I am more likely to see it that way. Thank you!

Actually, no. Rama is a fictional planet.

My love for astronomy got me carried away, but I also wanted to throw in a fictional planet as a bonus to see who would catch on. The name comes from Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama. It's more of a special bonus than based on fact.

A big part of me doesn't want to listen to that 25 minute behemoth again. But it was good. As for "Would I Lie to You", that song is totally a classic for me. I've heard it my whole life (first song here I'm familiar with!), and I've always thought it was a catchy melody, though repetitive. It's hard to believe it's not on AM yet.

To concur with SS Ron, why is there a (pretty raunchy) skit among the nominations? I mean, I guess it's eligible, but still... I'd like to hear from whomever sent this in.

Bumblebee Unlimited - Lady Bug

Amy Macdonald - Don't Tell Me That It's Over

What a novelty track that Lady Bug track is. Still good for the dance floor though. I can imagine people in crazy costumes rollerblading around doing the disco.

IO GROUP
Journey - Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)
Carl Sagan / Symphony of Science - A Glorious Dawn
KT Tunstall - Saving My Face
Diana Ross - C.C. Rider

I couldn't in good conscience qualify the bottom nomination as a "song." It's a skit.

Busy week coupled with big election and finishing Luke Cage on Netflix are why my usually very prompt vote has been delayed.

VARUNA

Univers zéro - La Faulx (BEL)
Disco Inferno - The Long Dance (UK)
Earth - Even Hell Has Its Heroes (USA)
Charles & Eddie - Would I Lie To You (USA)

"La Faulx" is creepy. Reminds me of The Joker's theme from Dark Knight.

RAMA

The Rotary Connection - I Am the Black Gold of the Sun (USA)
Donald Byrd - I Feel Like Loving You Today (USA)
A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras (USA)
Tame Impala - Remember Me (AUS)

Top Two are so similar, it may as well be a tie. I like the bottom two a lot but just could not vote them over "Black Gold". Now, if APC's song had been "The Outsider", this group would look quite different.

GANYMEDE

Devo - Beautiful World (USA)
Amy Macdonald - Don't Tell Me That It's Over (UK)
George Jones & Tammy Wynette - He is My Everything (USA)
Bumblebee Unlimited - Lady Bug (USA)

"Lady Bug" I feel would be best as an instrumental. Devo wins with little competition.

IO

Journey - Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) (USA)
Carl Sagan / Symphony of Science - A Glorious Dawn (USA)
KT Tunstall - Saving My Face (UK)
Diana Ross - C.C. Rider (USA)

"Separate Ways" is my favorite Journey song. Hectorthebat nominated "C.C. Rider" as his #4 choice, so you'll have to ask him if you see him why he nominated a track that doesn't even classify as a "song". Spoken Word certainly is eligible, though.

VARUNA GROUP (the most difficult group to rank ever)
9. Disco Inferno - The Long Dance (Sounds like a mix of New Order and Destroyer, but fails to appeal me. Still wins here.)
13. Charles & Eddie - Would I Lie To You
14. Univers zéro - La Faulx
15. Earth - Even Hell Has Its Heroes

RAMA GROUP
1. Donald Byrd - I Feel Like Loving You Today
3. The Rotary Connection - I Am the Black Gold of the Sun
10. A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras
11. Tame Impala - Remember Me

"I Feel Like Loving You Today" is my nomination. I was hoping it would do a bit better. It is so full of love and chill and I think of this forum the same way. Full of love and chill.
I discovered this song only a half year ago, when Georgie put Mizell Brothers at #2 in his artist lists (behind Steely Dan) and I decided to check them out. Mizell Brothers are actually a production team, perhaps most famous for their works with Donald Byrd in the mid-70s. This finally led me to "I Feel Like Loving You Today", which however was produced by Isaac Hayes. From the 1981 album "Love Byrd", which also includes the more famous song "Love Has Come Around", which predates the house genre by some 5 years or so. That song might have done better in this game and I almost chose that one, but I finally decided that I love "I Feel Like Loving You Today" even more.

GANYMEDE GROUP
5. Amy Macdonald - Don't Tell Me That It's Over
6. Bumblebee Unlimited - Lady Bug
7. Devo - Beautiful World
16. George Jones & Tammy Wynette - He is My Everything

IO GROUP
2. Carl Sagan / Symphony of Science - A Glorious Dawn
4. Journey - Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)
8. KT Tunstall - Saving My Face
12. Diana Ross - C.C. Rider

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Sagan
"A Glorious Dawn" is also one of my nominations. This one I had no hopes for, since it's a novelty song. But Carl Sagan was such a sensible person. If he was still alive I would shout "Carl Sagan for president!". He has become my biggest hero during the last couple of years and I wanted to honour him with this song, that was first on youtube and then released as a single thanks to Jack White. My feelings make me love the rather cheesy music too. Quite a bit like how I feel for Cohen's "I'm Your Man" album.
Everyone you meet fights a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.

VARUNA

Univers zéro - La Faulx: 8
Earth - Even Hell Has Its Heroes: 6.5
Disco Inferno - The Long Dance: 5
Charles & Eddie - Would I Lie To You: 4

"La Faulx" takes a pretty comfortable win here. Nice discovery!

RAMA

The Rotary Connection - I Am the Black Gold of the Sun: 8
Donald Byrd - I Feel Like Loving You Today: 7
Tame Impala - Remember Me: 6.5
A Perfect Circle - 3 Libras: 5

All of these are at least interesting, but The Rotary Connection is the one that wins my heart.

GANYMEDE

Bumblebee Unlimited - Lady Bug: 10
Devo - Beautiful World: 10
George Jones & Tammy Wynette - He is My Everything: 7
Amy Macdonald - Don't Tell Me That It's Over: 7

I got the sonofsamiam treatment here - 2 of my nominations in the same bracket! The Bumblebee Unlimited track I knew would be a "love it or hate it" choice, but it's soooooo irresistible to me. Penned as a sort of come-on by a male bee looking for action with the titular ladybug, there are plenty of 6-legged double entrendres to spare. In most situations, this would make for cheap laughs with a short shelflife, but the song is built upon such a massive foundation that it's hard not to get caught up in the pheromones. One of the heftiest basslines disco ever enjoyed drives the whole thing, and coupled with an absolutely relentless freight train of repeatedly pounded piano chords, it packs a wallop. Throw in tasty guitar licks, percussion that sounds not too dissimilar from crickets chirping, congas beating out rhythms at rapid-fire pace, and a swirling string section that adds drama to a descending bridge pattern, and it would be one of the very best disco songs as an instrumental piece alone, rendering the ecstasy of the eventual insect coupling all the more potent. It adds up to one of the most brilliantly colorful, fiercely addictive, and thoroughly enjoyable songs of the 1970s.

"Beautiful World" resonates more than it ever has with me after the disastrous American election that still has me in such torment. :( Devo is so much more than a 1-hit wonder, and their New Traditionalists album is synth HEAVEN. This track highlights a more serious offering than their usual fare, and the video brilliantly juxtaposes the different worlds humans inhabit despite being on the same planet.

IO

Journey - Separate Ways (Worlds Apart): 7.5
Carl Sagan / Symphony of Science - A Glorious Dawn: 7
KT Tunstall - Saving My Face: 5

I can't help myself with the Journey track - it's catchy as all get out! I really enjoyed the Carl Sagan/Symphony of Science mashup as well. Even the KT Tunstall track is quite preferable to her bit hits from the mid 00s.

I'm not sure about the Diana Ross track, because I'm not sure the linked video is the intended nomination. If so, rank it last for me. However, after looking through YouTube, it seems like there is a dance called the CC Rider (see here, here, and here) which all use the same song: "The Boss" by Diana Ross, which you can hear a studio version of here:
If the intended nomination is for "The Boss", I'd place it FIRST in this group. Sorry to throw a wildcard here, but I'm really not sure what the intended nomination was.

I PM'd Hector.

If we don;t hear back from him, please adjust votes for both sides.

I just don't know what's going on. This scenario is so unusual.

The other thing we could do is open the voting again for Week 7 for that group. Most of us would only have to listen to one more song.

Don't worry Hector. It was an understandable mistake from both of us.

The way I see it, we have two options:

1) Disqualify "C.C Rider" and move on.

2) Allow people to amend their ballots for the duration of next week,

I think the latter is more fair to Hector and the voters. Since it is only one additional song, I will move the Io Group to a separate topic and allow a change of vote for that group. Tally will start all over with a clean slate, where every song has zero votes.

But for the last two hours, only the first three groups are open. Io repoens next week.

Voting is kind of closed. PLEASE RECOUNT the first three groups!

Varuna:

Disco Inferno-The Long Dance (38, 4)
Univers zero-La Faulx (35, 3)
---
Charles & Eddie-Would I Lie to You (34, 4)
Earth-Even Hell has its Heroes (32, 3)

La Faulx and Disco Inferno traded places often but were always 1-2. The other songs held fast but those two advanced.

Rama:

The Rotary Connection-I Am the Black Gold of the Sun (50, 9)
Donald Byrd-Feel Like Lovin' You Today (37, 2)
---
Tame Impala-Remember Me (32, 3)
A Perfect Circle-3 Libras (21, 0)

Tame Impala did very well actually and almost advanced before Donald's last second surge.

Ganymede

Devo-Beautiful World (38, 3)
Bumblebee Unlimited-Lady Bug (37, 3)
---
Amy Macdonald-Don't Tell Me That It's Over (36, 5)
George Jones & Tammy Wynette-He Is My Everything (29, 3)

This group was closer than even I anticipated. "Lady Bug" only advances on the last ballot

We're calling mulligan on the Io Group. It will be rebooted for the coming week. Each song in there, including "The Boss", now has zero votes.

But if we learned anything from this, it's taht I and everyone else should check the links first to see if they are for real so this does not happen again.

Duly noted and corrected.

I took Sweepstakes Ron's vote and added them to Moonbeam's Numbers he gave me, becuase I didn't know how up to date he was.
