Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1994

Post by nicolas »

Episode 5 : 1994

Please submit at least your favorite 5 songs and/or albums of the year 1994. Lists must be ranked. Only the top 15 songs/albums will be given points.

The deadline is midnight (Pacific Time) on the 30st of June. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

15 albums/songs per year will advance, including at least 1 non anglophone album/song(the Nicolas/Henrik act). To be eligible to the second round, songs/albums must have a minimum of 2 votes. In case of a tie, a poll will be set up.

Please submit your list starting with #1 (no reverse order please) according to the following example

Artist - Album/Song

you can use 1), 1. or whatever separation character you like but what matters is not to reverse the song order and respect the artist - song order.

EPs and compilations are not allowed. The generally admitted reference for dates is Rate Your Music, unless proven otherwise.

Songs :

1) Portishead - Roads
2) Pavement - Fillmore Jive
3) Jeff Buckley - Grace
4) Beastie Boys - Sure Shot
5) Beastie Boys - Sabotage
6) Kyuss - Supa Scoop and Mighty Scoop*
7) Jawbox - Savory
8) Ben Harper - Walk away
9) Portishead - It's a Fire
10) Nine Inch Nails - Hurt
11) Kyuss - Demon Cleaner
12) Supergrass - Caught by the Fuzz
13) Weezer - My Name is Jonas
14) Drive Like Jehu - Luau
15) Built to Spill - Car

The top 3 would be in my top 50 all time, only 97 and 2000 would have an as great top 3 for me.
Leaving those out is killing me, most of them would have made my list last year :

Beastie Boys - Alright Hear This
Beastie Boys - Flute Loop
Bikini Kill - Rebel Girl
Blur - Parklife
Blur - To The End
Green Day - Basketcase
Hole - Doll Parts
Korn - Shoots and Ladders
Low - Words
Mano Negra - Santa Maradona
Mc Solaar - La Concubine de l'hémoglobine
Nine Inch Nails - Closer
Nirvana - Where did you sleep last night ?
Oasis - Live Forever
Prodigy - No Good (Start the Dance)
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
The Chemical Brothers - Chemical Beats
The Offspring - Self Esteem
TLC - Waterfalls
Weezer - Undone (the Sweater Song)

Wonderful year for songs and a good year for albums too (though only Dummy is fantastic from the start to the end)

Some remarks :
A bunch of these songs, mostly in the bubbling part, benefit from a melancholy factor, but I still think they all are pretty damn great.
*Supa Scoop and Mighty Scoop is a serious contender for having my favorite intro ever
I think Hurt by NIN is better than Johnny Cash's version, even though I could see why one thinks the opposite.
Henry, don't be surprised, neither Grace nor Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain will be in my top 15, though I will give one more chance to Pavement given that I only have a top 14 so far. And the most represented band here, the Beastie Boys, will only be 3rd, Ill Communication being a bit overlong.
The "Why" at the center of Sabotage and the 2nd "Boy" in Fillmore Jive might be my two favorite syllables in the History of music. I often feel at lack of words to describe Fillmore Jive, this song is so unique and powerful... I hope people will join Brad and me to help it reach next round.
And screw Hallelujah, Grace (the song) is Jeff Buckley's true masterpiece... I don't know a lot of songs so intense and sung with that much power and sincerity (plus it's in 3/4 which also is a good thing :D so is Supa Scoop and Mighty Scoop's intro by the way. And so are Luau and My Name is Jonas while I'm at it.)

Built To Spill
Ill Communication
Stereolab

I would add Disco Inferno's DI Go Pop, Ween's Chocolate and Cheese, Laika's Silver Apples of the Moon, and maybe Bark Psychosis' Hex (if you like stuff like Talk Talk's last two albums).

I have a big list myself of stuff I need to get to this month. I'm most excited about Built to Spill, Organized Konfusion, Pulp, Tortoise, and Kyuss.

Here's my album list in progress

once again the Divine Comedy's ahead with Neil Hannon's best album IMO. A masterpiece of chamber pop.

These are the albums I've been listening since 2007 (when I started rating my records). I need to relisten to some of them.

And there are a lot I want to hear before the end of June, just like

Beck's "One Foot In The Grave"
Nirvana
Massive Attack
Ben Harper
FSOL (from my electro days)
Ismael Lo - Iso
Black Crowes
Pavement
Negresses Vertes
Mc Solaar
Iris DeMent
Kante Manfila
Danyel Waro
DeUs
Nick Cave
Outkast

etc...

Any suggestions (you know me, please no noisy indie or punk rock or pretentious post rock or post jazz) ?

Any suggestions (you know me, please no noisy indie or punk rock or pretentious post rock or post jazz) ?
There are quite a few albums on that list that I haven't heard but clearly need to listen to. As for other albums you might like, nicolas, I totally recommend Green Day's Dookie.

Just joking.

Ketama, Toumani Diabaté & José Soto's Songhai 2 is very good. The combination of Flamenco and various types of African folk music on the album sounds very refreshing to my ears and I think you might enjoy it too. Maybe you could try out songs like Sute Monebo or Djamana Djana to find out if you want to listen to the whole album.

I think it's also worth sampling a few tracks from Nick Lowe's The Impossible Bird. There are beautiful ballads on the album like The Beast in Me (Johnny Cash's cover of the song on the terrific American Recordings is also very good, but I prefer Lowe's original). He also adds in country on songs like Soulful Wind and old-school R&B on his version of True Love Travels on a Gravel Road, among other songs. The album flags a little towards the end, but the first half is great.

You've mentioned before that you're not a big fan of the Smiths but that you like some of Morrissey's solo efforts. Vauxhall and I is his best solo album IMHO. The lyrics are witty and he's not scared to bare his soul - and the music is often as big-hearted and honest as the lyrics (which is something I suspect you might like). That said, I guess you might think that parts of the album are too similar to what you don't like about the Smiths. Anyway, my favourite tracks are The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get, and also Now My Heart Is Full and I Am Hated for Loving.
...will keep us together.

I was listening to some records for this poll and I gave another check on Jeff Buckley's debut. Always found Grace overrated. It was underwhelming after a few listens, always thought that'd grow on me like other records, but I couldn't pass through the oversinging and the MOR traces. Some people have told me that if I had been a teenager during his hey-days I'd have a different opinion, that he as music figure and his sudden death had a whole context, but still, if that rang true to me I'd feel the same way about one of my favorite artists of all time also known as Elliott Smith.

Buckley had a great record on him, but I don't feel Grace was it. What made big voiced people like Captain Beefheart, Liz Fraser as part of the Cocteau Twins, and even Tim Buckley so interesting was the atmosphere, the mood, the surroundings on their recordings. They had the blueprint vocals, but also had playfully structured songs, solid songwriting and envelope pushing experiments. That's exactly what set them apart of other big voiced people that haven't achieved artistic heights. Buckley lacked in each one of them and relied to much on the strength of his voice. I can't help but think that the legacy he has left is made of American/Pop Idol-X Factor-The Voice aspirant singer/songwriters, MOR coffee house singer/songwriters and standard-bearers of oversinging like Rufus Wainwright. I've seen many people give him credit for reinventing Hallelujah by Cohen, but I see his version – though great – as a rework of John Cale's (perhaps my favorite version of the song, followed by Cohen's).

I won't say that what I feel about Buckley the same how I felt about listen to Nirvana a few years ago. Although Nirvana lost lot of its punch power when I first listened to It since I was already a fan of many 80s artists that served as touchstones for Cobain, there was something about his persona that went into the songs, his character was always present. What I'm trying to say is that, though Nirvana didn't sound fresh to me when I first wrapped my ears around their records, the band had the force of Cobain's lyrics and performance to get away with it. Jeff Buckley didn't provide me that. Everything sounded been there-done that, the execution was boring and I grew tired of the vocals. There's this whole thesis that Nirvana is what it is because of the mythical death of Kurt Cobain. That's a half-truth, but in my opinion they still have the material to back up at least their place in the all time great artists features – though I'd sure place Pixies, Replacements and Husker Dü above them. It seems to apply for Jeff though, and I don't feel Grace has the power to do the same to him or back up a good amount of what he gets.

Presumably, the Unplugged tracks that would be eligible for the 1994 songs list would be "Jesus Don't Want Me for a Sunbeam," "The Man Who Sold the World," and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" Probably not the three Meat Puppets songs, though.

Upon further reflection, I guess there wouldn't be one. I think I let my judgment get colored by the fact that the Kirkwood brothers play on those tracks. Since they hadn't been released before -by Nirvana-, they'd be eligible if anyone wanted to vote for them.

Upon further reflection, I guess there wouldn't be one. I think I let my judgment get colored by the fact that the Kirkwood brothers play on those tracks. Since they hadn't been released before -by Nirvana-, they'd be eligible if anyone wanted to vote for them.
So the eligible songs on MTV Unplugged are the ones above (including the Meat Puppets songs)

Oh man, I finally decided to tackle the 22 song monster that is Frank Black's Teenager of the Year. I'm not even halfway through it, but there's something so beautifully fresh about it. No Pixies shouting, no stop-start Pixies guitars, but there's something undeniably Pixiesy about it. All of the songs are catchy so far, and I can't wait to discover it more.

great lists sonofsamian

"Protection" is a great song and will be in my list. Too bad the entire album is not as good. And of course I like the inclusion of The Divine Comedy's Promenade especially in such a deep list.
