Unacclaimed IV GRAND FINALE
Unacclaimed IV GRAND FINALE
And so the longest, most contentious and deepest quality Unacclaimed finally draws to a close.
For many of the early rounds, it was competitive. We had to resort to a tiebreaker in group stage. Twice! That is how crazy this was.
But now at the advent of this tournament, 128 songs entered, but only two remain. And only one can go home with the crown.
Like last year, a group winner and runner-up face off in the final. But unlike last year, they are from different groups.
Amadou & Mariam-Je Pense a Toi
Won Venus Group (62 , 9)
Def. Girls Aloud-Can't Speak French 11-4
Def. Wax Taylor-Our Dance 10-3
Def. Mari Boine - Goaskinviellja / Eagle Brother 11-4
Def. Rotary Connection-I am the Black Gold of the Sun 11-5
Def. Mylene Farmer-Sans Logique 11-6
The blind couple of Mali blew out all competition. Even some of the ones perceived as elite bowed in their wake. It would be neat to have an African act win, but we shall see what happens.
Laura Viers-July Flame
Runner-up Mercury Group (47, 4)
Def. Nujabes-Feather 9-6
Def. Archie Shepp-Attica Blues 8-7
Def. David Lynch and Lykke Li-I'm Waiting Here 9-6
Def. Angelique Kidjo-Olofoofo 12-4
Def. Cinematic Orchestra-The Man with the Movie Camera 12-5
Laura doesn't seem like it, but she has been this year's Cinderella. This should be less surprising, seeing as she narrowly lost her group to only a song that ended up being a semifinalist as well. But the songs she beat on the way over here are what was impressive. For such a soft, unassuming song, it really does capture your heart. But does she have enough in the tank to pull off one last major upset?
Pick one of the two.
Voting ends 2/5 at 11:59 Forum time.
Whoever wins, this was a great tournament and either song deserves it! Thank you to everyone who voted this year.

Happy belated Lunar New Year / Chinese New Year, everybody!
Couldn't get to 20 votes last week, maybe this week...?

Re: Unacclaimed IV GRAND FINALE
This is a fantastic final for me. One of my nominations against another song I really love. So, as much as I enjoy "Je pense à toi", I stay behind my nomination and vote for
Laura Viers - July Flame

Everyone you meet fights a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.
Re: Unacclaimed IV GRAND FINALE
Very good final indeed! Two worthy contenders for the crown. I'll go with "July Flame", arguably my favorite discovery of the tournament.

Re: Unacclaimed IV GRAND FINALE
My vote goes to one of my early guesses for winner : Je pense à Toi.
Thank you Whuntva for this brilliant contest. I cannot wait until the next one, so, considering the huge success of this tournament, I renew my question : why not make it a permanent fixture rather than a yearly one ? I think (please feel free to correct me) that the interest in the game is sufficient and not too time consuming to allow for this... but then I may be wrong.

Can't go wrong with either one of these. Thanks, whuntva!

My vote goes to Je pense à toi.
Concerning the idea of making this permament: I think after a certain period of time, there will always be some kind of fatigue. I think I'd prefer to keep this as a yearly fixture to keep looking forward to.

July Flame!
Re: Unacclaimed IV GRAND FINALE
I don't know what you mean by "permanent". It would be hard to run a tournament structure indefinitely.
There is actually a valid reason why I make it annual. When I first pitched the idea of an Unacclaimed revival in 2014, Sweepstakes Ron pointed out the possibility of missing new songs included on the update that many could miss. To play it safe, I decided to have the game coincide with the update.
One close call came when there was no update this year. To compromise, I said that no songs on the TBA list were eligible at the time of writing, but that any songs added after the tournament announcement would be eligible. Hope that makes some sense.
So there is a method to my madness, long story short!

Re: Unacclaimed IV GRAND FINALE
What I meant was that once one run is over, we start the next one rather than wait for a year or so...This would allow for newer songs to be introduced as and when. I guess there would be some fatigue indeed, but I don't think I would be subject to it, considering we are talking about songs...Not albums. Anyway, thinking outside of the box....
Re: Unacclaimed IV GRAND FINALE
I agree with everybody that it has been a great tournament, with lots of great discoveries. The best part were the rounds of 32 and 16, when we had many huge songs competing against each other.
I don't know why subtly all the choices became so obvious to the group as a whole. I mean, "July Flame", for example, won hardly against "Attica Blues" and it was not easy against "Nujabes - Feather" and "I'm Waiting Here", but against "Man With the Movie Camera", which had been one of the strongest songs of the game, it was a strike. Maybe some tracks had more of a grower potential than others?
Myself, I'm voting for a track that looked too repetitive at first, but which has become one of my favorites since round of 64:
Je Pense à Toi

Sorry for not having participated here, it seems for the comments I read I lost some gems this time...
My vote goes for Laura Veirs (even if I love the Amadou & Mariam song too).

I had this in my top 300 last time I made a songs list. "July Flame" runs it close though. Several songs from Unacclaimed IV will make my next top 500.

Re: Unacclaimed IV GRAND FINALE
While the Big Game starts tonight, this tourney wraps up.
If you don't want to watch Lady Gaga at halftime, I'll call the game then.
We have tied last year's record turnout of 19. One more will surpass it!

I'll call my vote for Laura Veirs.
Re: Unacclaimed IV GRAND FINALE
This game was very interesting. It started with the song in front winning 3-0, then there was a bit of a rally towards the end. But by that time, the game was called.
The winner by a record score of 11-9 is...
Amadou and Mariam-Je Pense a Toi!
They become:
[*]The first duo to win.
[*]The first time a male voice has won (shared with female Partner)
[*]First song sung in French to win.
[*]First act from the continent of Africa to win.
[*]First song to score more than ten points in the final.
[*]First song to score ten points every elimination round.
And so Unacclaimed goes to rest. But in the meantime, I will post a followup sometime soon regarding the next project...Unacclaimed Greatest Hits!

Be it known that had this game run any longer, Laura Viers could have ended up like the Patriots tonight.

Re: Unacclaimed IV GRAND FINALE
I have tried to look who vote for and don't vote for my songs and the results are exactly what i have thinking on the beginning of the game.
The people whose tastes seemed closest to me before the game were those who voted for my (anonymous) songs
So I want to thanks, in order: DaveC, by far the guy with the most similar taste in music and after that Spiritualized, sweeptakesRon and JamieW wich really stand out
Emiliendelrey and Bruno are on the other side of the spectre, and it's not new... but guys, I don't blame you...héhéhéhé !
