Ranking the Top 100 Albums

Post by andyd1010 »

My first participation on this forum was for the all-time artists poll last year. Some people were disappointed with how less knowledgeable new users skewed the results. One user asked, how many of you have even listened to the top 100 albums? I have always been more of a song-based listener. I've listened to all of the top 6,000 songs (has anyone else?), but I had not listened to the top 100 albums.

letmeintomyzone's AM Showdown Series was a great why to finally get me to do it. It was a very worthwhile process, and now I have much more of an appreciation for a lot of these artists. I loved most of the albums, and now I'm going to listen to a lot more albums in the future. Right now I'm going through all of the highly-ranked albums from 2000 before submitting lists for the 2000 poll. Anyway, listening to the top-100 albums has taken up most of my listening for the last couple months, so I figured I should post something about it. Here's my initial ranking of all 100.

1 | Funeral
2 | Abbey Road
3 | OK Computer
4 | Born to Run
5 | (What's the Story) Morning Glory?
6 | The Beatles (White Album)
7 | The Joshua Tree
8 | Pet Sounds
9 | Rubber Soul
10 | The Dark Side of the Moon
11 | The Bends
12 | Led Zeppelin IV
13 | Nevermind
14 | Who's Next
15 | Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

21 | Sticky Fingers
22 | Let It Bleed
23 | My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
24 | In Rainbows
25 | Achtung Baby
26 | Appetite for Destruction
27 | Imagine
28 | Are You Experienced
29 | Highway 61 Revisited
30 | This Year's Model
31 | Hunky Dory
32 | Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
33 | Is This It
34 | Led Zeppelin II
35 | Electric Ladyland
36 | Elephant
37 | Grace
38 | Rumours
39 | Back in Black
40 | London Calling
41 | Doolittle
42 | Harvest
43 | Blood on the Tracks

49 | Graceland
50 | To Pimp a Butterfly
51 | Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul
52 | Bringing It All Back Home
53 | Surfer Rosa
54 | The Doors
55 | Innervisions
56 | Dummy

70 | Automatic for the People
71 | The Velvet Underground & Nico
72 | Screamadelica
73 | The Stone Roses
74 | After the Gold Rush
75 | Psychocandy
76 | John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band
77 | Ramones
78 | The Queen Is Dead
79 | Low
80 | Sign o' the Times
81 | Loveless
82 | Raw Power
83 | Live at the Apollo
84 | Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols
85 | Blue Lines
86 | Horses
87 | There's a Riot Goin' On
88 | Murmur
89 | The Clash
90 | It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
91 | 3 Feet High and Rising
92 | Endtroducing.....
93 | Daydream Nation
94 | Kind of Blue
95 | Bitches Brew
96 | A Love Supreme
97 | Closer
98 | Fun House
99 | Unknown Pleasures
100 | Trout Mask Replica

Some of these were very hard to rank. Some albums are very strong from top to bottom but don't have a standout song. Others have 1-3 fantastic songs but are much weaker after that. I may have overvalued the standout songs a bit. Anyway, the top 41 are in my all-time top 100, and I have at least one song in my top 6,000 from 91 of these albums.

I'm also more a song listener than an album listener, and I think participating in this forum will change that a lot.

I did this twice-in 2011 and 2012, so it's been a while but most of the albums are still the same (if not in different positions). Maybe I'll do it again this year...
Anyway, here are the two RYM links to the aforementioned lists:

Only big difference between your list and mine is Purple Rain and Nation of Millions would be easy entries in the top 10 for me (though I'd also probably rank Trout Mask Replica last).

I could not rank all of them as between 40 or 50 would be pretty much tied as "great but doesn't touch any of my heart strings".

Still, what I can do is rank my very favorite and the not so much ones :

top 10 :
1. Arcade Fire - Funeral
2. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
3. Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
4. Portishead - Dummy
5. DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
6. The Beatles - Abbey Road
7. Radiohead - OK Computer
8. David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
9. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
10. Radiohead - In Rainbows

bottom 10 :
91. Talking Heads - Remain in Light
92. Sly and the Family Stone - There's a Riot Goin' On
93. The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
94. Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
95. John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band
96. Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
97. The Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy
98. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
99. David Bowie - Low
100. Derek and the Dominoes - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs

I KNEW someone was gonna bring that up. A few more listens and I'd probably bump Songs in the Key of Life up a few spots, and maybe Innervisions. (Thing is, my favorite Stevie album's Talking Book, because that's the one with "Superstition" and "I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever)").

In hindsight, I might bump Key of Life up to 21 or so, but again, I need to listen to it again.

Why do I feel kinda bad that I would probably rank Funeral amongst the bottom ten after seeing it ranked so high in the two lists?

03) Purple Rain
04) Revolver
05) Abbey Road
06) Tapestry
07) To Pimp a Butterfly

Too avant-garde for my tastes (same reason I prefer OK Computer and The Bends to Kid A), but I see why others love it so much.

From The 2014 All-Time Albums Poll, there were twenty-four AM 100 albums that didn’t make the forum's top 100. AC/DC had the worst forum placing, though it's still not that bad.

To be honest it's probably in my top 5. Although sometimes and I might get killed for admitting this but I sometimes like Fear Of A Black Planet over it. Depends on the mood I'm in. It's like I prefer Niggaz4Life over Straight Outta Compton. I feel like even though no Cube, the production by Dr. Dre is on another level that Straight Outta Compton can't match. I'm a little surprised N4L isn't on the AM 3000. Maybe there should be a 'Controversial Opinions About Music' thread on AMF.

Well, Fear of a Black Planet has "Fight the Power," "911 is a Joke," and "Burn Hollywood Burn" (it also has that unfortunate line in "Welcome to the Terrordome," but I'll try to ignore that), and the National Recording Registry picked it over Nation of Millions for preservation, so you might be onto something. I haven't heard the other NWA album, so I can't judge. And the "songs everyone hates that you like" and "Someone explain Kid A to me" threads are pretty quickly becoming controversial music opinion zones (funny how I always seem to be the one to instigate it).

That's ok though. If we all agreed it would be a boring place. Anyway "Welcome To The Terrordome" is my favorite Public Enemy song. I remember my dad who told me as a little kid in the last 80s that "rap" wouldn't last, bought the single on tape and it had the instrumental on it and he played it about 7 times in a row and I immediately fell in love with the song. It's not a catchy song or anything but that beat is just so unconscious. It's like that beat has no rules to it. And yes I know about the line but as you said I just ignore it.

Maybe it's worth a re-listen. "Fight the Power" is the song I, at the very least, admire the most, but "Don't Believe the Hype" is also pretty amazing.

Most of my PE knowledge is from Nation of Millions and Black Planet - anything else of note from before or after? (BTW, in general, I enjoy old school rap more than anything, but there are a lot of rappers nowadays I also really like. Though, if we're talking controversial opinions, I can't stand Lil Wayne, Future, or Lil Yachty.)

5. 911 is a Joke
911 and Hype would be in my top 10. Caught probably top 20.
LOL I'm ok with Wayne and Future. Yachty is a hell no. I'm old school like you. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and that era just will never be forgotten or duplicated in hip hop. I will say that the music has evolved and gone very commercial which on one hand makes me happy for people like my parents who said it wouldn't last but on the other I feel like it's gotten so commercial that some people feel like anyone can do it and that isn't the case. I've tried to rap and suck at it.

I help run a hip-hop listening club at school (my math teacher was always reciting little bits of "South Bronx" and that got us to talking), and since he also grew up in the '80s, it's pretty much all golden age stuff. I can't rap worth beans, but I'm better than anyone else at school (which isn't saying much, considering they freestyle worse than Yachty). While there are some rappers who can get away with less-impressive flows if they're charismatic enough (like Biz Markie), too many just think they're charismatic enough from the get-go and that forgives them any crap lyrics. It happens to bad rappers like Rick Ross but also genuinely good ones like Jay Z or Nicki Minaj.

That's a pretty spot on analysis I agree with on Biz Markie, you can also put Ol' Dirty Bastard in that category too. I agree with you on Jay-Z too. I think he's one of the best (meaning top 10 of all time but in the back half of the top 10) but I get so tired of people always saying he's the best ever. He's probably the most popular ever but there is a lack of originality for me to put him above Rakim, Nas, KRS-One or even Biggie for that matter. I feel like to be the best ever you have to distinguish yourself from everyone else and he just doesn't do that for me.
