Tubular Bells

I just found out the album I've been listening to that I thought was Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells is actually Tubular Bells III. The CD case has three solid lines which just look like separators instead of a number. But, now listening to the original it seems to be extremely similar. Is the remake just the same as the original except broken up differently and with singles added, or is there more to it?

And why does III always get such inferior reviews? It was placing in my top fifty. Are people just comparing it to the original?
