AM demographics poll - 2017 edition

I can't believe it's been a year already. What a year though. Not a very good one. The world isn't in a very good state right now, although here in France the population is in higher spirits than usual.

Anyway. Time to run the third demographics poll to see where we're standing. Here are the results from the last one:

Canada: 3
Western U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii): 8
Midwestern U.S.: 6
Southern/Southeast U.S.: 6
Northeast U.S.: 7
Latin America: 3
U.K. and Ireland: 7
Nordic countries (Scandinavia, Finland and Iceland): 2
Benelux (Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg): 4
Germany, Switzerland and Austria: 1
France: 5
Spain and Portugal: 2
Italy and Greece: 0
Eastern Europe: 1
Africa: 2
Middle East: 0
Russia: 0
Mongolia, China, Japan and Korea: 1
India and Southeast Asia: 2
Australia + New Zealand (and Oceania): 4

Back in its early days, the forum was largely populated by Europeans, but in the last couple years America definitely overtook it. We'll see if it's still the case as of today. Another question is whether we have more lurkers from the rest of the world. I'd really love to see our little community finally expand beyond its Northern America/Western Europe base. We do have some active members from elsewhere, but they're still a minority.

And also, if you're Sun Ra's neighbour, I'm sorry that Saturn isn't an available option, and please don't hesitate to share some news about how he's doing.

Great Pierre! I hope a lot of people participate to make a really good overview of us forumers.

I noted that people from the Caribbean might not have a suitable option available. Since there are already 20 alternatives, which is the maximum for forum polls, maybe it can be claified that the Caribbean is included in "Latin America".

Well, it gave me the occasion to learn how I could edit the options available in the poll! Caribbean added to Latin America :)

Just voted! (For NZ) I wonder if the other votes are just Australians or is there another Kiwi here?

I can tell from your book lists that you were born here. I wasn't, but I've been a Jaffa since 1988. I support the All-Blacks, but try to avoid "Loyal" as much as possible.

On a somewhat related note, does anybody know the male to female ratio in AMF? how about the average age of the members? I get a feeling that in forum is male dominated born between the 70s-90s.

If you're really interested, we can make that a three-phase poll ;) I usually have this one last for a month; I don't mind going further to do a complete demographics review of the AM community. I don't think I'll do ethnic origins and religions, though.

That'd be great. I'm really interested, only for the gender and age demographics one.

Mid-August bump. Currently, there's ten less votes than last time, if my maths didn't betray me.

More exactly, the most important group of people on the forum are from New York ;)

This is a big change from the early years of the forum a decade ago, when most people seemed to be from Europe. But not that surprising: nowadays, the most recent acclaimed albums and songs tend to reflect the tastes of Northeast U.S. critics', as Pitchfork is currently the most influential publication in professional music criticism. I'm not sure how long this domination will last - Pitchfork has dominated music criticism for 15-20 years now, and that's about when Rolling Stone ran out of fuel back in their heyday. But I'm digressing.

Oh I know. Boston has a bit of a rivalry with New York though, so I had to make the distinction. Although half of my coworkers commute from New York, so it's not far off to say I'm from New York now.

Probably the last bump or second-to-last bump before the end of this poll. Impressive to see we crossed the 70 votes line this time! However, Scandinavian members still didn't vote (aside from Henrik, of course), it looks like we lost Africa and Northern Asia is still uncharted territory for AM. Eight days left to correct that.

Time to close this one. AM remains even more so than before a Western world thing, with 34 members from America, including 31 from North America and 29 from the States alone, and 30 from Europe, plus, surprisingly enough, seven members from Australia and NZ. Only 2 members are from elsewhere, namely India and Southeast Asia. It's not today that AM will be conquering the rest of the world.

The results are not completely exact, as I expect that Dan (from South Africa) or Harold (from Scandinavia) didn't vote, for instance. But this wouldn't affect the results much, obviously.

And now let's start the second phase of the demographics poll for this year, namely the age of the members.

I'm not strict, you can check wherever you feel your heart is ;)

Though since you're in Taiwan, if you could find someone to transcribe (not translate) this list in Roman alphabet, that would be cool :P

I could actually do alot of that myself with my wife if we ever had some. Transcribing includes artists too, right? I know several artists here would go under different names completely depending on if you used their English or Mandarin name.

Actually, I don't know how it works. I can read the most important Japanese signs so that's why I posted several Japanese lists, but with these a direct transfer to the Roman alphabet is relatively easy once you have the bases. I don't know how Mandarin works in comparison.

One of these lists contained, for instance, a couple Chinese entries:

- 鄧麗君 - 淡淡幽情 which I transferred as Teresa Teng - Dàndàn yōuqíng as suggested by Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dandan_youqing

And:

- 老崔 - 红旗下的蛋 which I transferred as Cui Jian - Hóngqí xià de dàn/Balls Under the Red Flag once again as suggested by Wikipedia

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balls_Under_the_Red_Flag

This time, I added the English translation because it's an official one featured on the album cover art. That was my general rule with Japanese album titles as well.

But as I said, I don't know how it generally works otherwise for Mandarin :( :?: I was only asking that half-seriously, if it's a ridiculously difficult task, then drop it ;)

I did vote, and yes, I selected the UK & Ireland option. I grew up in South Africa but have lived most of my adult life in the UK and I'm a British citizen now (which may or may not mean shit when freakin' Brexit finally comes into effect). I still understand South Africans better than I understand the British, yet I feel more British than South African. I'm not patriotic either way - patriotism is one of those things in life that baffles me.

I dunno. If my country does something really good, I feel patriotic. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened much these days (save for the protests in response to my country's horseshit).

In Europe, nationalism and patriotism have left deep scars which still make many people suffer to this day (although it unfortunately tends to fade away as history marches on).

More generally, I personally don't care at all for nations and homelands and such. The existence of a civilization is a bleep on the radar of history, and as an irreligious and generally non-ideological person, I don't have any emotional or otherwise deep-rooted attachment to the existence of nations.
