Wow, I thought there would be 128 songs.

EDIT: Lol, this is going to be a massacre any way this goes.

Man, that is a stacked field of songs. All of them are in my top 1,000 (I included the ranks from my latest lists). Until looking at the field, I didn't realize I was such a bigger fan of R&B songs than albums. None of the albums are in my top 300, but 10 of the songs are in my top 150.

Not exactly playing in my field here as I like but don't love most of the selection (and all the Stevie Wonder albums tends to blur with each other in my memories... same for Prince)
I don't get the acclaim for Live at the Apollo though.

Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
Prince - Sign 'O' the Times
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
Michael Jackson - Off the Wall

Fun fact: the name of There's a Riot Going On was meant as a response to the question posed by the title of What's Going On, so it's neat that they're matched up.

Ridiculously good stuff in here. The first 3 album match-ups were just mean-spirited. As far as the songs, they were all clear winners to me, though the quality was fantastic from top to bottom.

9. Stevie Wonder - Superstition vs. 14. Ike and Tina Turner - River Deep - Mountain High
12. Michael Jackson - Billie Jean vs. 4. Beyonce feat. Jay-Z - Crazy in Love
7. Otis Redding - (Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay vs. 6. Sam Cooke - A Change is Gonna Come
2. Marvin Gaye - What’s Going On vs.8. Daft Punk - Get Lucky
3. Prince - When Doves Cry vs. 16. The Righteous Brothers - You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling
11. Aretha Franklin - Respect vs. 15. Four Tops - Reach Out I’ll Be There
13. Ray Charles - What’d I Say vs. 1. The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back

When you have a colossal track like "River Deep - Mountain High" at your #14, that's a statement of how incredible this songs playlist is. Only "You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling" is a bit below the level of the others.

7. Otis Redding - (Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay vs. 6. Sam Cooke - A Change is Gonna Come - The toughest match of the week. Had to listen many times to each one, and still don't know what's the best one.

From this playlist, I consider "I Want You Back" anad "What's Going On" the two examples of perfect songs. Fullfilled arrangements, great musical structure and some of the best interpretations you could see on R&B. Every second of these tracks are thrilling. Very likely both will make my AT top 50 in next year's poll!

Well, Toni, what can I say? You're right, "I Want You Back" is a great song. But being #16 on a list so packed up with immortal classics: a) is no dishonour at all and b) it doesn't mean that I don't like the song. On the contrary, I love the song! I had a hard time chosing this last position, I switched from Beyoncé to the Righteous Brothers to finally the Jackson 5. I think we all agree this was a very tough first week for the R&B poll.

Yes, all 16 tracks are great! I listened to the playlist some times, and it was incredibly pleasant all the time. Actually, I just wanted to know if you disliked this song and why. For me, one of the best funky pieces ever recorded.

Sam Cooke beats Otis Redding by one point, while Stevie and Michael curb-stomp the competition. Only one I feel is relatively bullshit is Aretha losing to the Four Tops.
