Please submit your list starting with #1 (no reverse order please) according to the following example

What about F♯A♯∞ by Godspeed You Black Emperor! The album was first released as a vinyl in 1997 (according to RYM, Wikipedia or any source) and re-released with one (over 29 minutes long) bonus track as a CD in 1998. Also the songs with same names vary a bit (some parts are longer etc.)
So is it a 1997 or 1998 release?
Henrik wrote:15 (2) Radiohead - Lucky
By the way Lucky by Radiohead was released in 1995 in charity album Help. It was actually my first touch to the band.

This didn't hit me hard as Silver Apples of the Moon did on first listen, but it'll definitely place. What a group. Like Stereolab, I think I'd like pretty much anything they did because their sound is so strong and unique.

Probably my favorite year ever, at least by far the year with hands on the best top 5 albums.

Albums :

1) Built To Spill - Perfect From Now On
2) Elliott Smith - Either/Or
3) IAM - L'école du micro d'argent
4) Radiohead - OK Computer
5) Mogwai - Young Team
6) Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape
7) Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E
8) Blink-182 - Dude Ranch
9) The Chemical Brothers - Dig your own hole
10) Millencolin - For Monkeys
11) Biosphere - Substrata
12) Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West
13) Bjork - Homogenic
14) Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen, We are Floating in Space
15) Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
16) Smog - Red Apple Falls
17) The Prodigy - The fat of the Land
18) Laika - Sounds of the Satellites
19) Labradford - Mi Media Naranja
20) Mouse on Mars - Autoditacker

The albums between 6 and 10 are precious relics of my early years of music listener (though I think the Fat of the Land and L'Ecole du Micro d'Argent are the only albums in this list that I discovered on the year of its release), they really opened the way to listening to a lot of music. That being said, lots of albums I listened back then does not seem that good to me anymore while those ones have bravely resisted the test of time. And yeah, Incubus and Blink have become pretty awful bands since, but those 2 albums still are really great in 2 very different ways.
Substrata is probably my favorite ambient music album (though I'm not sure of what to include in ambient, so a bunch of other albums I like might be considered ambient too, dunno...). Anyway, it's really nice, give it a try if you have some time, even if like me you usually don't enjoy ambient music that much.

Songs :

1) Built to Spill - Velvet Waltz (#2 all time)
2) Elliott Smith - Between the Bars (#3 all time)
3) IAM - Demain, C'est Loin (favorite French song of all time)
4) Built to Spill - I Would Hurt A Fly
5) Grandaddy - Summer Here Kids
6) Beta Band - Dry the Rain
7) Foo Fighters - Hey, Johnny Park!
8) Mogwai - Fear Satan
9) Elliott Smith - Pictures of Me
10) Millencolin - Twenty Two
11) IAM - Dangereux
12) Radiohead - No Surprises
13) Blink-182 - Dammit
14) Radiohead - Electioneering
15) Bjork - Bachelorette

A bunch of bubbling unders :

Biosphere - Poa Alpina
Bjork - Joga
Blink-182 - Josie
Blur - Song 2
Blur - Beetlebum
Built to Spill - Randy Described Eternity
Built to Spill - Made Up Dreams
Deftones - my own summer (shove it)
Elliott Smith - Say Yes
Foo Fighters - Everlong
Gala - Let a Boy Cry (ultimate guilty pleasure ? maybe...)
Goldfinger - Superman
IAM - Chez le mac
Incubus - A certain shade of green
Incubus - Vitamin
Metallica - Fuel
Modest Mouse - Teeth Like God's Shoeshine
Modest Mouse - Heart Cooks Brain
Mogwai - Yes, I Am a Long Way From Home
Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy VII Soundtrack) - Cosmo Canyon
Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy VII Soundtrack) - Aerith's Theme
Notorious B.I.G. - Hypnotize
Radiohead - Airbag
Radiohead - Exit Music (For a Film)
Radiohead - Climbing Up The walls
Radiohead - Paranoid Android
Smog - The Morning Paper
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space
Spiritualized - Broken Heart
The Offspring - All I Want
Wu Tang Clan - Triumph
Yo La Tengo - Deeper Into Movies

I know I'm one of the only person to consider Electioneering as a highlight of OK Computer...

I know you're a big fan of Cesária Évora, Nicolas, and I’m sure you will like Cabo Verde too. One of the biggest surprises for me personally about these 90s polls is that she has turned out to be one of my favourite artists of the 90s. I’ve loved all her 90s albums so far.

You might also like the Erykah Badu album. It’s a contemporary R&B album, but it’s very much rooted in old-school soul, and it also incorporates jazz and even blues. And it’s passionate and more than just a little sexy.

Please don't forget that Elliott Smith's single Speed Trials / Angeles / I Don't Think I'm Ever Gonna Figure It Out is from 1996 and therefore is not eligible for this poll.

Thanks sonofsamian! Great list as always.
I'll try to listen to the Caetano album.

the thing is i am very busy this month (my exam is 2 weeks from now) so I'll probably post the results late since I can't compile right now. You're gonna have to be patient, but as Honorio said this month there will be "No Surprises" :D

PS : I like "A Short Album About Love" (especially the first song) but it's not my favorite Divine Comedy ; I prefer Promenade, Liberation and Casanova (in that order). But anyway it will probably be in my top 10 of '97.

Why do Daniel F.... Lanois' productions are so acclaimed ? I hadn't heard "Time Out Of Mind" for a long time and at the first second I was like "shit, it's Lanois..."
Sounds like he stuffs the songs with cotton wool. Everything turns numb. Like on that Emmylou Harris album. But indie rock fans semm to like it; all the musical colors dyed out like this...
Good songs in a jar of formaldehyde.
Fortunately this Dylan album countains really good songs like "Not Dark Yet" or "Make you Fell My Love" and many others, but the production... I don't agree

I'm surprised all the Built to Spill fans haven't also voted for Modest Mouse. I discovered that album recently and it seems to appeal to the same sensibility that Perfect From Now On does (granted, I do prefer PFNO).

I did, even if for some reasons I like The Lonesome Crowded West a bit less than This is a Long Drive..., Good News for People Who Love Bad News and the Moon and Antarctica (which I think has the songs that are the closest to PFNO spirit)

wow - please don't feel that way! If it helps, I find very little resemblance between the two! Perfect From Now On is worth at least ONE listen!

I've adored The Lonesome Crowded West ever since I heard it (it's now top 10 of all time), and I listened to the Built to Spill album. And then again. And then again. I've given it nowhere near enough listens, but they are a fantastically tight band and have probably shot into my top 5 of the year. Very Modest Mousey to my ears (though of course that's no reason to not listen to Built to Spill. Give Velvet Waltz a listen, it truly is amazing).

@Brad & Zorg : I've listened to "Would Hurt A Fly" and found it good. Dunno if I'll have time to include the album in my list but it sounds much better than MM to my own ears

@kingoftonga : Daft Punk's "Da Fun k" is from before 1997 ('95 I guess, no time to check). So if you have one more song you want to pick, there's one free slot.
