Ranking Billboard's Greatest of All Time Hot 100 Singles

Post by StevieFan13 »

Billboard updated their list of the biggest songs to ever chart on the hot 100 a few years ago, so I decided to rank the tracks from best to worst.

I don't know numbers 89,91,98 and 100 from your list, but going by the fact that 99 is easily my favorite from the list, I'll check them out.

Not worth it. Trust me. Especially not #100.

Unfortunately, the Billboard Hot 100 chart didn't begin until 1958, which leaves out a lot of great hits from the very beginning of the Rock Era. I wish they would've used the "Top 100" chart, which was the chart's predecessor, to account for this in these rankings.

The version they list on the Billboard site is the Four Tops version. They can be inconsistent like that though - I recall checking it once and seeing Ella Fitzgerald's version of "Mack the Knife" there instead of Bobby Darin (if hers was really the bigger seller, it'd be #2 on my list).

Also, we've already got two people taking a stand for Nickelback. I'm curious, how come? Different strokes for different folks, of course, but I'm definitely interested to hear what others hear in "How You Remind Me" that I don't.

I'm not fond of at least a 3rd of the list, so I don't feel like revisiting all those songs and ranking them accurately... So I'll just post my play counts for these songs since 2010, which is at least correlated pretty strongly with how I would rank them. No. 1 and 2 are clear. Dumb catchy songs that came out since 2010 like Blurred Lines and All About That Bass get an artificial boost here mostly because of them being played at college parties.

Rank | Artist | Song | Plays
1 | The Beatles | Hey Jude | 186
2 | Marvin Gaye | I Heard It Through the Grapevine | 156
3 | Adele | Rolling in the Deep | 131

And for what it's worth, I love "Let the Sunshine In" a lot more than the Aquarius part, so I clipped that part of the song off and listened to it on its own 44 times since 2010.

Nickelback became a punchline (and justifiably so), but "How You Remind Me" sounded quite fresh (at least to me) when it first came out, before they repeated the formula ad nauseam. I remember being a consultant for blueberry farmers (man, I've had some strange jobs) and driving around all day with my supervisor listening to an album-oriented rock station. Tons of generic music, so maybe that one has fond memories for me since it stood out from the rest. I think you've said you're 18, so I'm wondering if all of the Nickelback songs were introduced to you around the same time (which would be cruel), so "HYRM" was just another formulaic song by them by that time.

Same with "You Light Up My Life." Granted, I was only 6 years old when it came out, and it was polarizing even back then. Many thought it was about the worst thing they'd ever heard, while others loved it to the point it ended up spending 10 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100. I now recognize its shortcomings, but it's so deeply-rooted in my youth that I've stood by it (even while many I knew in the late '70's and early '80's who loved the song at the time now pretend they always hated it.)

I am indeed 18, so for most of these songs my first exposure was either on the radio when they initially came out or long in hindsight. There are some songs nostalgia has made me defensive of (biggest one I can think of is “Follow Me” by Uncle Kracker, although seeing as “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer is my AT #3, maybe it’s that one), but Nickelback have been a punchline as long as I’ve known them. And when I first heard “You Light Up My Life,” I already knew of it as an infamously bad song, and to me it didn’t disappoint.

I'll vouch for Sixpence None the Richer - I like that one, too. Leigh Nash was also the featured vocalist on one of my favorite songs of 2003, Delerium's "Run for It." Unfortunately, I probably feel about "Follow Me" the same way you feel about "You Light Up My Life." (In both of our defenses, though, we were both probably about the same age when those personal favorites hit the radio.) ;)

Hey, fair. It’s an objectively shitty song, but I heard it all the time as a kid so I guess I sort of have fond memories by association. It came out when I was one, so yeah.

I like "Blurred Lines" and "Kiss Me" for what it's worth (I see a lot of hate directed towards the former on these lists).

And "How You Remind Me" is probably the most tolerable Nickelback song out there, which doesn't make it good or anything. It's an okay song.

I haven't listened to all 100 of these, but I think "Sugar Sugar" might be my least favorite of the bunch (although I can't remember if I've heard the specific Nickelback song lsited, it would probably be a contender for the bottom spot as well).

Trust me, they definitely meant to list the Tommy Edwards version of "It's All in the Game," which was a huge hit in 1958.

The hate for "Blurred Lines" isn't for its music (which is quite good, even if that's because it's basically a ripoff of Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up") but for its lyrics, which are just plain vile - it's the ultimate "no-doesn't-REALLY-mean-no" song, and it's pretty indefensible.

Yeah, that's why I ranked it so low. Still like the groove, hate everything else. Listen to Weird Al's "Word Crimes" if you want the groove but less problematic lyrics.

My love for How You Remind Me is a mixture of nostalgia, catchiness, slight hard rock edge, it's melancholic feel, and Chad Kroeger's voice which I've always rated very well. So as you see plenty of reasons to dig it. :D
