The Best Albums And Songs of 1999

Post by nicolas »

Episode 10: 1999

Please submit at least your favorite 5 songs and/or albums of the year 1999. Lists must be ranked. Only the top 15 songs/albums will be given points.

The deadline is midnight (Pacific Time) on November 30. For the scoring, rules and other details check here.

15 albums/songs per year will advance, including at least 1 non anglophone album/song(the Nicolas/Henrik act). To be eligible to the second round, songs/albums must have a minimum of 2 votes. In case of a tie, a tie-breaker will be set up.

Please submit your list starting with #1 (no reverse order please) according to the following example

Artist - Album/Song

you can use 1), 1. or whatever separation character you like but what matters is not to reverse the song order and respect the artist - song order.

EPs and compilations are not allowed. The generally admitted reference for dates is Rate Your Music, unless proven otherwise.

Thanks :-) It's wonderful to be back.

Awesome list. Always nice to see stuff that isn't hogging Top 500-1000 spots on the main page in these polls.

I love 1999. It's in many ways the first year of the 00s, as I feel albums like Summerteeth, The Soft Bulletin, and Agaetis Byrjun feel much more at home next to Kid A and Funeral than the do next to Nevermind and Definitely Maybe.

It's easily the most relevant/ least dated year of the 90s (not saying the best, but it feels much more in synch with today's music.) It just gets punished on "best of decade lists" for not being definitively 90s the way 1991, 1994 and 1997 are.

Post by Nassim »

I like this year, there isn't any great album (my #1 would not make the top 5 of half of this decade years) but there is a lot of good ones, and my top 15 songs can compare my pretty much any other year. I will listen to them once more but I'm still a bit lost by the acclaim of the Soft Bulletin and 69 Love Songs

Albums :

1) Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun
2) Rage Against the Machine - The Battle of L.A.
3) Slipknot - Slipknot
4) Built To Spill - Keep it Like a Secret
5) Ben Harper - Burn to Shine
6) Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
7) Muse - Showbiz
8) The Chemical Brothers - Surrender
9) Bonnie Prince Billy - I See a Darkness
10) Beck - Midnite Vultures
11) The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
12) Fiona Apple - When the Pawn...
13) Smog' - Knock, Knock
14) Moby - Play
15) Mogwai - Come On Die Young

Close but no cigar : dEUS, Basement Jaxx

I have to say that I only thing that the 4 last songs on "Emergency & I" are really great, but they are quite awesome. I think Henry and Listyguy and other people who like good ol' guitar driven rock'n'roll should listen to it though, songs like "What do You Want me to Say" are probably right on their alley.

Songs :

1) Smog - Teenage Spaceship
2) Muse - Sunburn
3) Sigur Ros - Svenf g Englar
4) Basement Jaxx - Jump 'n' Shout
5) Built to Spill - Carry the Zero
6) Ben Harper - Suzie Blue
7) Bonnie Prince Billy - I See a Darkness
8) dEUS - Everybody's Weird (Soulwax Remix)*
9) Bonnie Prince Billy - I See a Darkness
10) Sigur Ros - Staralfur
11) Slipknot - (SIC)
12) Supergrass - Mary
13) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Road Trippin'
14) Ben Harper - Alone
15) Flaming Lips - Waiting for a Superman

Bubbling :

Ben Harper - Alone
Beck - Sexx Laws
Elliott Smith - Son of Sam
Le Tigre - Deceptacon
TLC - No Scrubs
Foo Fighters - Stacked Actors
The Chemical Brothers - Asleep For Day
The Chemical Brothers - Hey Boy, Hey Girl
The Roots - The Next Movement
Moby - Natural Blues

*That's probably the best Soulwax remix ever (only "Standing in the Way of Control" can compare") but I don't know when the remix has been made... the original song is quite good too though so I don't mind giving it points.

Albums

01 | The Flaming Lips | The Soft Bulletin
02 | Blur | 13
03 | Built to Spill | Keep it Like a Secret
04 | Add N to (X) | Avant Hard

12 | Plone | For Beginner Piano
13 | Opeth | Still Life
14 | The Dismemberment Plan | Emergency & I
15 | Mouse on Mars | Nuin Niggung

Maybe it's not my favorite year either, but I did enjoy discovering the OOIOO, Opeth, Plone, and Olivia Tremor Control albums this month. Also, 13 is by far my favorite Blur album, and was my number 1 for the year until repeated listening to The Soft Bulletin this month pushed it from ~120 all time to 50.

Songs

20 | Madonna | Beautiful Stranger
21 | Blink-182 | What's My Age Again?
22 | Moby | Porcelain
23 | The Roots | The Next Movement
24 | Macy Gray | I Try
25 | Aimee Mann | Save Me

I'm sure my number 1 here stands out among my other choices for the decade, but I rediscovered "Steal My Sunshine" last year and have been listening to it all the time since then. I think it's the absolute perfect pop songs, a sunny mix of nostalgia and fun.

sorry guys i'm overwhelmed with work so I don't know when I will finish the compiling. I'm halfway through it, then I'll have to make the final EXcel file so be a little patient for the results and the final.
I guess that from January on I will be less present on this forum. That's life...

It is... It sure is... Never liked work so much lol..

You know I'm passing the schoolteacher exam next spring, there will be a music examination, so I'd love to start a big classical /modern classical poll because I'm gonna spend the first half of 2013 listening to a lot of classical music.

But that's another story...
