I never know what to think about Joanna Newsom and in my moments of disliking her that’s what she sounds like to me as well.

I think Joanna's voice is an acquired taste. I personally think she sings on pitch, I'm not sure if you are saying she is off-key. I also think the way she sings brings a very unique character to her music, and especially this album in particular. My number 1 thing in music is melody, but the ability to create a sense of time and place is up there, and Joanna and her harp-playing check that box big time.

I very much wanted to enjoy Joanna Newsom because she is from a small town in California where my cousin lives. But, her voice is very annoying for me. I admire her compositions and would probably enjoy the harp playing if it wasn't for her voice.

I hated Ys the first time I heard it, but I quite enjoy it these days (I put the album in my top 20). Her voice isn't that much more off-putting than some other artists I like (Dylan, Waits, etc), and after getting used to it I could more appreciate the other elements of her music.

Regarding Ys, I don't find Joana Newsom's voice a problem on that album, while it sometimes was in the Milk Eyed Mender (except on Peach, Plum, Pear, still her best song).

Surprised to see Dear Science so high, I thought TV on the Radio's fall from grace would hurt it too. Do you overall think it is that much better than Return to Cookie Mountain ? (I don't)

I'm one (of many) who voted Dear Science well above Return to Cookie Mountain. I do like Return to Cookie Mountain, but it is the production that hurts it for me. I recall telling my son that their production choices grated with me and how much better I thought the album could have been. He gave me the 'you don't get it' talk and told me that the production is a feature not a bug. I know he still loves it, so I guess I still don't get it.

I think Cookie Mountain has better singles but weak second half and Dear Science is better overall.

Can’t stand QOTSA, they seem cheesy and generic to me.

I love Newsom but I get why others don’t. I suspect it correlates with how well you tolerate voices like Tom Waits too, if you are predisposed to look past pitch quality to emotional content.

I guess I'm in the minority here that loves Cookie Mountain, more so than Dear Science. I absolutely love the production, funny enough. To each his/her own I suppose.

Note the huge points gap between 5 & 4. Then another large points gap between 4 & 3. The top 3 being only separated by 30 points. The sequence of those top 3 changed with every ballot.

Some interesting results so far in the top 20. Dear Science is a nice surprise at 15 (especially without my vote, which would have been in the top 10). I'm sure no one expected Godspeed to make the top 10 or Third to top Is This It either.

Pleasantly shocked to see Godspeed make it to top ten.

I guess after seeing how well Luciferian Towers did here compared to critics, not *that* shocking.

Ditto: Thank you DaveC. Awesome handling and rollout for an awesome decade.

I'm actually a bit surprised at the list of people that put Illinois at/near the top. I guess it goes to show that Illinois touches the hearts of a lot of different people.

Thanks for another great presentation, DaveC! I love how these decade polls are always so unpredictable. Who would've guessed GYBE would finish in the top 10 when it was only the 5th ranked album of its year? Also, I thought it was a foregone conclusion "Funeral" would be #1. But then I've always underestimated the universal appeal of "Illinois." (Probably because it's always seemed like an album that wouldn't be for all tastes. The fact that nearly everyone seems to like it says a lot about the talents of Sufjan.)

Great poll and perfect presentation, DaveC. I think these decade polls are the best way to evaluate and discover the best music from each era. Like Henrik once said, the most accurate way to rank a group of albums, is to make everybody listen to same pieces and than rank them all. That has lead to a fairer evaluation of albums like "Third", "Stories from the City...", and (even if I put it almost in my last place) "Godspeed".
Happy surprise to see "Illinoise" crowning it all. Deserved one.

Thanks for participating everyone, and thanks for the thanks Listy, prosecutorgodot, JamieW, Toni, notbrianeno, Dan, and Henrik.

I was pleased about pretty much every album that improved it's performance in this poll compared with past polls. But I was also surprised that Illinoise took top spot away from Funeral/Kid A, in fact, I gave it it's second lowest ranking at #51 on my list, while the next lowest was #30. That is the decisive factor, it is an album that almost everyone likes, while Funeral & Kid A - while not being hated - each garner some middle of the pack votes. It is interesting that AM would put 'Is This It' in the top 3 instead of Illinoise.

The way these polls evolve over time is interesting, and when we get to a 2010s poll it will be fascinating to see how much our revised consideration of albums differs from the first impression of our year end polls.

That's pretty bad, I actually forgot to place Illnois. Funeral would have been no.1 if I did.

Thanks DaveC for a well run poll throughout the year.

Amazing after all that just 3 points separating the top 2 and all all of the top 3 that close.

I was happy with most of the movements since last time too. The one that sticks out as disappointing is Person Pitch - Panda Bear. But can’t win ‘em all I guess.
