1990. A year that didn't ring a musical bell immediately. Turns out that on the top of my head I would have guessed most songs from this year where from the eighties.

Looking at the top of the official 1990 list I was a bit scared that this was one of the worst years ever for me. I don't like most of the top songs very much. Nothing Compares 2 U is good, but not a personal favorite. It is quickly followed by a lot of things I can't stand: Groove is in the Heart, Soon, anything by Madonna or Depeche Mode...

Luckily, when diving deeper I found a lot of stuff I really liked and also discovered some new things (including Primal Scream, whom I have always ignored up to now, undeservedly so it seems). It's a good year, but I wonder how much of that I'm going to see in our combined list.

My song list:
1. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - The Shipping Song
2. Primal Scream - Come Together
3. The Sundays - Here's Where the Story Ends
4. Fugazi - Repeater
5. Massive Attack - Daydreaming
6. Yumiko Kanki & Naoto Ishida - Mute City
7. Guns N' Roses - Knockin' on Heaven's Door
8. AC/DC - Thunderstruck
9. Paul Simon - The Obvious Child
10. LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out
11. Angelo Badalamenti - Twin Peaks Theme
12. Primal Scream - Loaded
13. Happy Mondays - Kinky Afro
14. Kid Frost - La Raza
15. L7 - Shove

Interesting to see how many people are voting for the Twin Peaks soundtrack. Last time around, it wasn't even in our top 20; now it's looking like a lock for top 10. I assume the new season and the availability of the original series on Netflix were the main drivers. I certainly fall into the category of people who didn't vote for it last time and did this time.

Jackson wrote:Interesting to see how many people are voting for the Twin Peaks soundtrack. Last time around, it wasn't even in our top 20; now it's looking like a lock for top 10. I assume the new season and the availability of the original series on Netflix were the main drivers. I certainly fall into the category of people who didn't vote for it last time and did this time.
These might be factors, but I'd also add the Moderately Acclaimed Albums game of last year to that, as it got quite far there. That did it for me, as I'm not really fond of the series (the first season, I never went beyond that) and had to rediscover the music through that game.

These are the current leaders in the race for wild card positions in the decade poll:-

10 | Enigma | MCMXC a.D. | 1990 | 105
11 | LL Cool J | Mama Said Knock You Out | 1990 | 103

For the 2000s, the cut-off for the top 50 wild-cards was at about 100 points for both albums and songs. Probably it will be different this time. 1990 seems an unlikely year to get lots of extra albums through to the decade poll.

Already know I'm gonna like the end poll if I can vote for Birdhouse in Your Soul.

I can’t believe an EIGHTIES synthpop band won a 1990s poll. The whole beauty of this year was it was filled with all these sensational GUITAR driven acts. I blame, no I give credit to dreampop, Shoegaze, indie and jangle pop for for giving synths the boot. Of course there were a few exceptions but to have one of them top a 1990s list? Richard Blade my wrists.

+1 - glad to see that at least four of us have a real appreciation for this gem of an album... vastly underrated and underloved.

Depeche Mode reached a whole new level with Violator, their sound expanded tenfold (eschewing synths-only songs and adding guitars). I think it’s their masterpiece, well worthy of the win.

I knew 1990 wasn't a year I agreed with the general consensus, but that only 2 songs I voted for made the top 10 and only one is in a wild card position is still something of a surprise. I don't begrudge people their tastes, but I personally hope that is a big low and it is up from here. Many of the current chosen songs are likely going to end up at the bottom of my voting list. At least I knew people loved Depeche Mode even if I don't get why, but what's up with this whole Mariah Carey re-appreciation movement?

Sometimes I don't think of the '90s really starting until 1991 (for the EIGHTIES, 1981 or 82). I agree with spiritualized's assessment, but regardless, Violator came out all of 3 months into the '90s, so it's not like it ruined anyone's idea of the '90s at the time (or now, evidently).

Only 1 of my songs made the cut (and that was "Enjoy the Silence," which I had at #14), but I'm accustomed to that, since my picks are typically well off the beaten path.

I wonder sometimes if it's because a lot of us have AM as our only source for listening to music? (Even the Twin Peaks soundtrack, as you pointed out, was from the MAA game.) I've noticed a lot of people post their lists the first couple of days the new thread is created. Does this mean they don't have time to listen to songs/albums from other people's lists, or is it just because they want to remind others of them before they vote? (I prefer to explore before posting, and it never fails to reveal a lot of great stuff.) I guess we all have an opportunity to nominate our unknown favorites for the various games on this forum, which is why I can't complain, since I don't. I'm definitely one who's always thrilled to see more songs the critics haven't heralded doing well in our polls.

P.S. I don't get the love for Mariah, either, but I'd guess that a lot of forum members are on the younger side and were teens when her big hits were ubiquitous. It's why I love a lot of the big hits from the eighties, anyway ...

I've never understood this either. It's weird because a lot of the lists posted earlier in the month tend to correlate very heavily with AM/popular taste, while a lot of the voters who have longer lists and vote for more obscure stuff wait until the end of the month. Isn't the whole point of these polls to discover new albums from each year?

I know for me, if I know I won't be able to do much more listening for the rest of the month, I'll post my list as soon as possible so I don't forget to (which I've done before). When I know I'm going to have more time to listen to new albums, I tend to wait longer. But I can't speak for anyone but myself.

I'm not sure how good this format is for highlighting new music; the whole reason I like tournaments such as Overlooked Songs or Moderately Acclaimed is because you have to listen to everything to be able to vote. To actually have much of an impact, a work would have to land in, what, my top 10 for the year in this format? The amount of listening I would have to do to find those new works that would land that high is a lot, and I have other things I'm listening to.

I don't think it's fair to lash out at people for not having time. I listened to the equivalent of 2 months worth of music last year; literally an average of over 4 hours a day. A large part of that was listening to new music; but after only starting listening to albums seven years ago, I still have tons of classics I haven't heard. Unless an album is being specifically brought to my attention (like it would be in MAA), I'm likely going to be spending my time continuing to work through the AM top 3000 (or checking out new music from the current year).

Personally, I do as much listening for a year as possible, including every ranked song on AM and the higher ranked songs on people's lists here. Though there are months when I'm to busy to listen to all of it. Then in the last few days I make a playlist of every song that stood out for me and listen to them several times. A flawed method, but it works with the time I have. That's why I always vote on the last day or so.

That reminds me that we used to have these recommendation topics for the year. Those are missed. I might start one this weekend.

If only there was a tournament for individual years.

I do so much Discovery listening in general I don’t have time to do it for these games. Between 2018 listening, my Discovery game, and BMAA listening if I tried to do more I’d never be listening to my favorites.

Worst case you can always make a recommendation in here, Nicolas for instance often posts his list in progress so we can browse through it. And I did post some recommendations during the 2000s yearly polls (to no avail though...)

I usually vote late because I try to pull as much listening as I can, especially when talking about 90s or 00s, which means both filling my AM gaps and trying to listen to albums that rank high on lists from people either I know have similar tastes to mine, or who always will post interesting stuff even if I might not enjoy all of them that much. So I can't say I'm fully thorough, I skip some people's lists I think are unlikely to make me discover things I'd like.
For previous decades I tend not to vote if I'm not confident enough that I know most of the albums that actually get a chance to move through (or if I actually don't care that much for even my top 5 albums, like in the mid 70s). That's why I hesitate to vote for the all time movie poll, I have only seen 100 movies out of the tspdt top 1000 so I feel my knowledge is a bit too low.
