Honorio wrote: 1. TED NEELEY "Ghetsemane (I Just Want to Say)" (1973)
A song I discovered (and loved) when I was a child, before learning about tastes (and all the prejudices that come with learning). "Gethsemane" was the central piece of the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" and it was written as a prayer from Jesus Christ to God expressing his doubts before his passion and crucifixion, with a strong emotional content ranging from fear to anger but ending with acceptance. The original version was part of a concept album released in 1970 and was sung by Ian Gillan of Deep Purple fame (this version still can be considered almost cool, you can listen to it here). But the one I like the most was sung by Ted Neeley for the 1973 motion picture. I know that those spine-tingling (or ridiculous, depending on the side you're on) falsettos from 2'25" to 3'25" are Gillan's but the part from 3'57" was the part when Neeley wins it for me. While Gillan's sticks to the melody of the first part Neeley makes an impressive transition from the defeated whisper of "now I'm sad and tired" to the final piercing growl of acceptance in "I will drink your cup of poison, nail me to your cross and break me." It's strange because despite my catholic upbringing now I consider myself an agnostic. But what can I do? This song still send me chills every time I revisit it. Verdict? Guilty, of course.
I saw Ted Neeley reprise his film role in a touring production of JCS in Philly sometime in the '90s - he still held his own!
I'm a big fan of the show/movie & it's music as has been noted elsewhere, and while I prefer the Gillan version, "Gethsemane (I Only Want to Say)" currently ranks at #2265 on my all-time list. No guilt here!

Well it's almost too embarrassing to mention that I noticed that nobody voted for "Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West)". So I'll try to get in a list in the next few days.

Also, I consider The Fratellis' "Costello Music" album a complete guilty pleasure in it's entirety. Any track from that album is so funny, and so silly, that it could deserve a spot here. Sure it is my favorite guilty pleasure of an album.

Obviously, these songs aren't in order of how much I like them. Rather, they're in a rough order of how ashamed I am at just how much I like them. (Example: "Until the End of Time" is so high because it's one of my all-time favorite songs; "Gangnam Style" is so high because I like it at all.) To complete my shame, I added my 1-10 rating after each song (and, as horrifying as it is to admit, there's nothing here that I give less than an 8).

101 | Any song by my beloved nu-metal faves: Nightwish; Within Temptation; Sirenia; Mushroomhead; Cold; Evanescence (except for "Bring Me to Life," which is well-known enough to feature above).

There are plenty of songs and artists listed above, and on my published lists, that I like but don’t feel guilty about. I found that I tend to expunge guilty thoughts from my mind so that guilty pleasures are forgotten. I don’t avoid putting guilty pleasure songs on my lists, I just don’t even think of them unless someone else mentions them. However, with a bit of effort I have bought at least a few to mind. I had difficulty with sequencing too. With some songs the guilt rather strangles the pleasure, for others, the pleasure nearly eclipses the guilt. Here goes.

1. Dana – All Kinds of Everything
Twee nursery rhyme and Eurovision winner. Perfection.

2. Andy Williams – Where Do I Begin
Schmaltz breaches my defences rather often, and Andy was the warlord of schmaltz.

3. Andy Williams – Can’t Take My Eyes Off You
4. Leonard Bernstein, West Side Story Cast - Somewhere
5. Boney M – Rivers of Babylon
6. Rolf Harris – Two Little Boys
7. Diana Ross- I’m Still Waiting
8. Sheena Easton – Morning Train
9. Clarence Carter – Patches
10. Zager & Evans- In the Year 2525
11. Kathy Kirby – Secret Love
12. The Seekers - Georgy Girl
13. Garry Glitter – Rock ‘n’ Roll (Part 2)
I purchased few 45’s, but this was one of them.

14. Nelly Furtado – I’m Like a Bird
15. The Archies – Sugar, Sugar
16. Aqua – Barbie Girl
17. 10cc – Deadlock Holiday
18. Rick Astley – Never Gonna Give You Up
19. Meat Loaf - Paradise by the Dashboard Light
20. Benny Hill – Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West)

I struggled a little on how to write this, in that I refuse vehemently to feel guilty for liking any sort of music based on the music itself. I vaguely went with songs that some people might give me strange looks for liking? But it's hard to distinguish, because there are some people who'd give me strange looks for my deep loves of Taylor Swift and Blink-182 (who I both left off, so they wouldn't dominate the list) and there's others who'd give me strange looks for listening to say, 20 minute experimental electronic tracks.

1. We the Kings - Check Yes Juliet
2. Sum 41 - Fat Lip
3. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - The Impression That I Get
4. Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue
5. LMFAO - Yes
6. John Mayer - Daughters (Trap Remix)
7. Lisa Frank 420 : Modern Computing
8. The Offspring - You're Gonna Go Far, Kid
9. Flobots - Handlebars
10. Smash Mouth - All Star
11. Maroon 5 - Sunday Morning
12. Sean Kingston - Beautiful Girls
13. Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart
14. Richard Marx - Right Here Waiting
15. Boys Like Girls - The Great Escape
16. Weezer - Heart Songs
17. All-American Rejects - It Ends Tonight
18. Trapt - Headstrong
19. Sum 41 - In Too Deep
20. Duck Sauce - Barbra Streisand

I don't think there will ever be a perfect definition. Is it good that "Total Eclipse of the Heart" will place highly? I doubt it sounded corny the year it came out, or a few years later (by which time the guiltier pleasures are usually classified). But some '80s music can sound kind of corny or like a guilty pleasure, a few decades later.

As far as dropping down either a hipster music or niche music or critics' music rabbit hole, I generally think it would take more than that (unless maybe you're a fan of the polka king of the Midwest). Typically I think of guilty pleasure music as something that potentially labels you as an extremely average and undiscerning music listener -- that you'll just listen to anything, and that you're maybe one of those idiots who can be blamed whenever some mediocre act gets ridiculously popular for a couple years. (Maybe these implications are why we only got so many submissions for this poll, ha ha.) I don't mind having some music like that in my playlist, though. Simple pleasures and all...

14 lists submitted, the latest coming from acroamor. I'm expecting Safetycat's list and my own for a total of 16 lists but hopefully more will come. Would be nice to at least hit 20. Maybe because it is associated with the feeling of "guilt" that this poll has a low turnout?

It's already been stated that this poll can be a challenge. Well, I guess spilling out that you like a certain song that's been thrashed in real life or by music critics can be a bold move. I for one admit to jamming to some Barry Manilow, Michael Bolton, and Diane Warren, but would not put them near an all-time poll.

This is an updated version of the entire list, in the wake of my top 1,000 songs submission.

1. Belinda Carlisle – Heaven Is a Place on Earth (#36 all-time)

2. Stevie Wonder – I Just Called to Say I Love You (#283)
Stevie Wonder gets sappy? Damn, what are they going to think of next?

3. Bette Midler - From a Distance (#333)

4. Whitesnake – Here I Go Again (#345)

5. Sir Mix-a-Lot – Baby Got Back (#372)
I remember this got over big at a college theatre gathering, over 10 years after the song came out. And it also got over a few years later as a coffeehouse performance. Both times it was sung/lip-synched by a woman, directed at a woman. It has aged much better than I would have thought in 1992.

6. Night Ranger – Sister Christian (#478)

7. Celine Dion – If You Asked Me To (#504)

8. Kenny G – Songbird (#737)

9. Herman’s Hermits – I’m into Something Good (#745)

10. Crash Test Dummies – Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm (#773)

11. Amy Grant – Baby Baby (#876)

12. Debbie Gibson – Lost in Your Eyes (#925)

13. Color Me Badd – All 4 Love (#977)
I despise almost all boy-band music. This really isn’t that bad. The melody seems to show up at one point in “Blurred Lines.”

14. Milli Vanilli – Girl You Know It’s True (#985)
Allmusic review of the album, 3 stars out of 5: “with dance-pop…artificiality is the name of the game, and that’s what is good about it … [the album] sounds like something [a computer] wrote on its own accord … it’s hard to imagine why there was such a fuss about an album so transparent, lightweight, and intentionally disposable.” Really, the whole album review is a perfect manifesto for this poll.

15. Vanilla Ice – Ice Ice Baby (#994)
I’ve been meaning to rap this song in its entirety as an answering machine message to somebody.

16. R.E.M. – Shiny Happy People

17. Britney Spears – Toxic
I would argue that this is not fundamentally different from the usual Britney Spears fare, just catchier.

18. MC Hammer – U Can’t Touch This
God, remember before rap had credibility, and this and Vanilla Ice were perfectly acceptable?

19. Loverboy – Working for the Weekend

20. Richard Marx – Hazard

21. Snow - Informer

22. Jewel – Standing Still

23. Jewel - Hands

24. Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart

25. REO Speedwagon – Keep on Loving You

26. Spin Doctors – Two Princes

27. Paula Abdul – Blowing Kisses in the Wind

28. Wham! – Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

29. Rick Derringer - Real American [i.e., Hulk Hogan's entrance music]

30. Stan Bush - The Touch

31. Rod Stewart - Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?

32. Europe – The Final Countdown

33. Huey Lewis and the News - Heart and Soul

34. Journey - Don’t Stop Believin’

35. Genesis - Invisible Touch
My 5th grade choir teacher, what passed for one, had us sing pop hits of the general era. A fair amount of the songs here are due to grade school, or a choir class or two.

36. The Beach Boys - Kokomo

37. Def Leppard – Pour Some Sugar on Me

38. Rascal Flatts – What Hurts the Most

39. The Black Eyed Peas – Let’s Get Retarded/It Started
On a rare occasion I went to a club, and they had a not-very-dressed Latina lady dancing to this song on a platform, and...uh, I guess I'm saying that this song sort of bribed its way onto my list with this good memory.

40. Joe Esposito - You're the Best Around

41. Joey Scarbury - Theme from The Greatest American Hero (Believe It or Not)

42. Katy Perry - Dark Horse

43. Barenaked Ladies - One Week

44. Men Without Hats - Safety Dance

45. Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal

46. Katy Perry - The One That Got Away

47. Fergie - Glamorous

48. Club Nouveau - Lean on Me

49. Billy Joel – Uptown Girl

50. The Monkees - I’m a Believer

51. Boston - More Than a Feeling

52. Survivor - Burning Heart

53. Richard Marx - Hold On To The Nights

54. Meghan Trainor – All About That Bass

55. Chumbawumba – Tubthumper

56. Maroon 5 – Moves like Jagger

57. Milli Vanilli – Girl I’m Gonna Miss You

58. a-ha - Take On Me

59. Los Del Rio - Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)

60. Archies - Sugar, Sugar

61. C+C Music Factory - Gonna Make You Sweat

62. Christopher Cross - Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)

63. Meat Loaf - I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)
I still don't know how Meat Loaf, dead center in the grunge era, came from nowhere and hit #1 with a ten-minute song which is mostly him just singing the title, (and then went back to nowhere).

64. Spin Doctors - Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong

65. Semisonic - Closing Time

66. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John - We Go Together

67. Kriss Kross – Jump

68. OneRepublic - Counting Stars

69. Sugar Ray - Every Morning

70. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John - Summer Nights

71. Extreme – Hole Hearted

72. Duran Duran - The Reflex
Arguably, Duran Duran's whole career was a guilty pleasure, and they were just a boy band unusually influenced by the likes of Bowie and Roxy Music. I know what you think. You think I'm a corporate asshole, that I don't appreciate pop culture. Man, that's not true -- when I wanna blow off steam, I crack open a Tab, I put on some Duran Duran, I play Robotron!

73. Pat Boone – Moody River

74. Extreme – More Than Words

75. Kenny Loggins - I'm Alright (Theme from "Caddyshack")

76. Chicago – Saturday in the Park

77. Bloodhound Gang – The Bad Touch

78. Bobby McFerrin – Don’t Worry, Be Happy

79. New Kids on the Block - You Got It (The Right Stuff)

80. REO Speedwagon - Take It on the Run

81. Ace of Base - The Sign

82. Gary Lewis & the Playboys - This Diamond Ring

83. Nicki Minaj - Super Bass

84. John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band - On the Dark Side
Is this like a name you come up with when you don’t think your band is gonna make it?

85. AKB48 – Koi Suru Fortune Cookie
What a wretched song. How dare this song exist. But it’s pretty catchy.

86. Lit - My Own Worst Enemy

87. Mr. Big – To Be with You
This is what I get for not jumping on the grunge bandwagon quickly in '92.

88. Kiss - Beth

89. Wings - Silly Love Songs

90. Rupert Holmes - Escape (The Pina Colada Song)

91. Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

92. Olivia Newton John and John Travolta - You're The One That I Want

93. Olivia Newton-John - Hopelessly Devoted to You

94. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Count On Us

95. Jennifer Lopez - If You Had My Love

96. Damn Yankees - Where You Goin' Now
Part 2: This is what I get for not jumping on the grunge bandwagon quickly in '92.

97. Sheena Easton - Morning Train (Nine to Five)

98. Vanilla Ice - Rosta Man
God, what kind of day is it when I'm putting a Vanilla Ice album track on a best-of list?

99. Timmy T – One More Try

100. Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch - Good Vibrations

Ooh, references.
I don't hate Duran Duran, but one of the most absurd and oddly scary notions of Ready Player One is that in that film's (and I guess novel's) future Duran Duran, of all bands, has become the standard of authenticity and seems to have replaced The Beatles as the most important band of all time.

Sorry, I forgot about that. Well, I suppose I could come with a Top 25. But now I’m on my way to Budapest, I’ll be there until Sunday on a Congress and I won’t have time to do it this weekend. If you can wait until Monday I could send a list. By the way, is there any forum member living in Budapest?

Same here, the guilty pleasure songs stuck because they're associated with an event (school presentation, graduation, first concert, first to learn on guitar) or a girl (crush, fling, dated, GF).

I didn't really like the movie, so I don't know if I was just looking for surface amusement at that point, but I thought those lines were hilarious -- here were are, about 30 years into the future, and everyone's running around obsessed with one's guy hipster sense from like, late 1982. Back then, a little before my time (my first music memories are a couple years later), I guess Duran Duran and MTV could have seemed like a bold changing of the guard from '70s-styled radio, for a brief, shining moment. (Trivia note: A couple years before Spielberg's long-standing, multi-Oscar-winning cinematographer shot Schindler's List, he shot Vanilla Ice's shitty film attempt, Cool as Ice!)

The movie is okay, but I remember when seeing the trailer beforehand and being confused about this vision of the future. In a few decades teenagers will be obsessed with 80's hits, movies and games? Why? The actual film gives this some context that sort of works, but a future in which previous slick commercial products are a sign of rebellion and ultimate imagination is odd at least. Not one I would like to live in myself and that's not even because almost everything looks like a ghetto.

I otherwise didn't care very much to be bombarded by pop culture references, anymore than I do by animated films. And I could never really get over the film's premise. (The world's a mess, and you motherfuckers are all playing video games?)

Fair enough, thank you for the list. I'll be posting my list as well before the end of the day and then wait for Honorio's list before releasing the results, shouldn't take long to tabulate the results. Any other lists submitted in the meantime are still welcomed. I hope to finish the roll-out by the end of the week to make way for the AMF Songs poll results.

Highest songs are a combination of level of “guiltiness” and how much I like them - probably with a little more weight to the guilt factor. Put together with a lot less science than that implies. All songs have a minimum rating (of mine) of “Great” or higher to be listed.

1 | Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch | Good Vibrations

7 | Donna Lewis | I Love You Always Forever
8 | Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow | Picture
9 | Jann Arden | Insensitive
10 | Mariah Carey | Love Takes Time
11 | Shakira | Whenever, Wherever
12 | Huey Lewis & The News & Gwyneth Paltrow | Cruisin'
13 | Taylor Swift | You Belong With Me
14 | Crazy Town | Butterfly

I’ll leave you with some sample lyrics:
* The vibrations good like Sunkist / Many wanna know who done this / Marky Mark and I'm here to move you
* Like Boyz II Men I'm on bended knee / Loving you, not like your brother, aw yeah / I wanna be your lover
* I'm serious as cancer, when I say rhythm is a dancer
* Lucky that my breasts are small and humble, so you don't confuse them with mountains
* Come come my lady / You're my butterfly, sugar baby / Such a sexy, sexy pretty little thing / Fierce nipple pierce you got me sprung with your tongue ring

8. ELVIS COSTELLO "She" (1999)
9. DAMIEN RICE "Amie" (2002)
10. JOSÉ EL FRANCÉS con la colaboración especial de NIÑA PASTORI y VICENTE AMIGO "Ya no quiero tu querer" (1999)
(see comments for this Top 10 on the previous page of this thread)

11. CAKE "I Will Survive" (1996). Not a guilty pleasure in my book at all (I think it's a terrific cover -with splendid bass line and vocals- of an already wonderful original) but I've seen it in other lists on this thread while not many people voted for it on the 1996 poll (only Rob put it at #2). Moreover I'm glad to see that this cover is gaining some acclaim recently (it's actually #16 on the great TrebleZine list of best covers ever).
12. RICCARDO COCCIANTE "Margherita" (1976). Italian melodramatic ballads Part 2
13. PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS "Mull of Kintyre" (1977). What can I do? I got goosebumps every time the pipes enter…
14. HAIR (ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST) "The Flesh Failures/Let the Sunshine In" (1968). An impressionable 14-years-old Honorio was moved to tears by the last scene of the Milos Forman's movie "Hair." Now I prefer the 1968 original.
15. ART GARFUNKEL "99 Miles from L.A." (1975). Some years ago I was listening to the song while I was on the computer and my wife and I began to argue (I don't remember why exactly but probably it was the same as always: too much time on the computer). Suddenly my daughter began to weep softly. "Why are you crying, my darling?" "Well, sob, mum and you are arguing. And the song is so sad…"

16. CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG "Our House" (1970)
17. SUPERTRAMP "Hide in Your Shell" (1974)
18. FEIST "Inside and Out" (2004)
19. SPICE GIRLS "Say You'll Be There" (1996)
20. FRANKIE VALLI "Grease" (1978)
21. ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA "Shine a Little Love" (1979)
22. HAIRCUT 100 "Love Plus One" (1982)
23. SPANDAU BALLET "Gold" (1983)
24. ROBERTO CARLOS "À distância" (1972)
25. THE BEE GEES "Run to Me" (1972)
26. PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS "My Love" (1973)

Mmm, most of them from the seventies, the times of my childhood when I didn't know what a music critic was…

At last I made a list. I never knew if I would make it. I kept putting it off because 1. I didn’t have any list resembling this ready, nor an overview of songs I consider guilty pleasure; and 2. I wanted to write something for each entry and never found the time. I pulled through today though, even if I wanted to continue the Album playlist project, which I put to the side for this day. I only had time for 10 written entries. Perhaps I do the others later this week. We’ll see. Forgive me for some spelling mistakes; I had to post this today for the deadline and didn’t have time to proofread.

Like many I struggled with the term guilty pleasure. Which do I consider? Perhaps people look at my top 1000 and see songs they would think of a fitting the term, but I don’t. For me, the song must have some obvious badness to it, yet this doesn’t diminish my love to it and sometimes strengthen it. It must make me feel stupid for listening to it, but leave me helpless regardless. Pretty much all these songs are overdone in one way of another, and most have ridiculous or at least silly lyrics.

There are songs mentioned by others that I love unironically and underline the difference between songs I list myself and which I don’t consider. Toto’s Africa appears a few time in this topic. I agree that a lot of Toto is guilty pleasure material, but not Africa, which I see as a sincerely good song. Your mileage may vary however.

Lastly, I don’t think I’m much of a guilty pleasure person. There are few I can like in this sort of way, so around 17 I already feel like the songs are becoming somewhat good. The ranking here is also different than my top 1000 songs – if applicable, as I wanted the list to reflect a sort of guilt/ pleasure ratio.

1. Jason Paige – Pokémon Theme
An easy number 1. This song is ridiculous. It basically contains a grown-up guy singing/ shouting passionately like you would expect from a schmaltzy rock ballad of the eighties and nineties. But most of those ballads have “normal” bad lyrics. Overstatements of love and loneliness and stuff like that. This one is in another league altogether, as Paige yells: “It’s Pokémon to understand the power that’s inside” and more nonsense like this. But you have to give the guy credit: he goes all out with it. Apparently he recorded the vocals in four hours and didn’t really have a clue what Pokémon was about, as it wasn’t famous in the west yet.
But this song has staying power, at least among my generation and younger (you have the have experienced this song young to fully get into it I think). In 2015, a year before the Pokémon Go hype, a campaign was started to get this song in the Dutch Radio 2000, a huge event at the end of the year in The Netherlands. This sounds like a joke (nothing remotely comparable is in there), but the guy starting the guy did in unironically, but for a nostalgic love for a song that he thought captured the hearts of a (still very young) generation. It worked. The song entered somewhere in the 1600’s and has since climbed to somewhere in the 200’s.
This is ridiculous of course, but the song has actually captured the imagination of many people my age and younger. Why? Because it is a great self-empowerment song. It is the Eye of the Tiger of the late-nineties/ early zeroes, a fist-pumping song for every sports game, motivational speech or anything that needs to give you energy. I mean the song starts with the immortal lines “I wanna be/ the very best/ like no one ever was”. A few months ago I was at a small amateur play about twentysomethings angst and these few lines from the song kept appearing. The use of it was ironic (it was a comedy show), but these people were onto something. The song is a mantra of sorts, no matter if it is about catching and befriending Pokémon.
This isn’t in my top 1000 and doesn’t belong there, but I admit that I play this song every now and then. It never fails to give me a kick. Soon my guilty giggles change into a more real smile and I feel like conquering life. “It’s Pokémon to understand the power that’s inside” isn’t such a strange line after all.

2. Frank Sinatra – My Way
A song I thought my do well here, as it is one of the most beloved and derided schmaltz songs of all time in my experience. Usually Sinatra is known for his great taste and he doesn’t go for this kind of grandstanding. I recognize that it is all a bit much and many covers are as insufferable as this should be. Nonetheless, Sinatra had enough class to make sure this song gives dignity to your life. It ranks at #330 in my top 1000 songs; the highest ranking for Sinatra!

3. Sting – Fields of Gold
Another popular favourite that gets laughed at a lot. This is a kind of romanticism that is too old-fashioned for the 1990’s – and perhaps the 1890’s too -, with it’s corny use nature and love. It reveals Sting finally as a very, very old soul and not the rebel he (to me at least) unconvincingly posed as. Perhaps I’m an old soul too, but I fall for this kitschy romance every time. It is practically the only thing Sting ever did – Police work included – that I truly like. He tried this type of unfashionable sincerity for the rest of his solo career on out, but only this one made it to my top 1000, at #675.

4. Tina Turner – We Don’t Need Another Hero
Like Frank Sinatra, you can enjoy a lot of Tina Turner, without irony, even if she skirted closer to camp with each passing year. The one time she went really overboard was with We Don’t Need Another Hero, one of the most absurd songs of the absurd eighties. Like the Pokémon song the appeal is in Turner singing with undiminished passion about something utterly stupefying. But whereas there is something surprisingly relatable at the core of the Pokémon Theme, this whole song belongs completely to cloud cuckoo land. Sure, it all relates back to the movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, but that movie is utterly stupid too (and not in a good way; I hated it), so the lyrics go nowhere. And yet there is something entrancing about Tina Turner going full throttle through lyrics like the chorus: “All the children say/ We don't need another hero/ We don't need to know the way home/ All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome”. Not in my top 1000, but I kind of love it regardless.

5. Three Doors Down – Kryptonite
Kryptonite came out when I was 14 and I think anyone would forgive a guy of that age for loving this. All boys my age did. But I didn’t. I actually only started listening to this some ten years later. Why I can’t explain, especially since this song has definitely no love outside of teenagers. It is a song told from the perspective of Superman and basically explains his sorrow. The last few years so some attempts on film to posit Superman as mayor tragic figure. Granted, those movie where bad all over, but it was never a concept that convinced m or spoke to me. I don’t care about Superman at all. But somehow this song makes his struggles seem appealing and even truly epic. “I walked around the world to ease my troubled mind/ I left my body lying somewhere in the sand of time”. I mean sure, but for a minute I completely buy it. It’s an unremarkable rock song in any way and very much of it’s time, but somehow it works totally for me.

6. Rena Strober – Lost In Thoughts All Alone
This song comes from the game Fire Emblem Fates, a game whose reputation makes those of these songs seem respectable. This isn’t the place to go into that, so I’ll stick to the song. In the game it is sung as a sort of magical healing song by a supporting character, while it also reflects the plight of the hero through it’s lyrics. Basically it is about making choices and finding your path in life. Very cheesy and the song isn’t that well-written either. Some have rightly complained about the bad use of meter. The Japanese original fares better that way apparently, but I don’t go for that one. Why? Because despite it’s inherent badness, it has a feel of destiny that is both understated and epic. Key is the use of professional musical singer Rena Strober for the song, which perhaps gives some credibility to the whole. But only a little: my head says no, while my heart soars. #827 in my top 1000 and without checking I can say for sure I’m the only voter.

7. Survivor – Eye of the Tiger
See Pokémon Theme song; this is it’s spiritual father. A grotesque power pump of a song, from one of the most infamously cheesy movies of the eighties, Rocky III. In this case my love of the song has nothing to do with the movie, as I’ve never seen it. But the song has become ubiquitous in sports montages for film and commercials, both ironically and seriously. It should have lost all it’s power. Perhaps no song has had to endure so much ridicule. But it stands as proud as Sylvester Stallone after decades of flops. And it stills pumps us full of energy (or at least, it does that to me). #990 in my top 1000.

8. Tears for Fears – Sowing the Seeds of Love
I already wrote about this one for the 1000 Song series and I have explained it’s strange appeal. I don’t feel like repeating it all here, but needless to say this is the ultimate over-produced song. In fact, it is so overdone that it becomes something special once again. #774 in my top 1000.

9. Destiny’s Child – Survivor
I don’t like Destiny’s Child much. It is girl power (as opposed to feminism) as filtered through the bratty, bitchy self-entitlement of spoiled teenage girls. I don’t particularly relate to any of it and if Beyoncé hadn’t become a mayor critical darling I think Destiny’s Child wouldn’t have been any more now than a very turn-of-the-millennium bit of silliness. Still, they have one great song, but nobody agrees what it is. It is Survivor. It is perhaps objectively better than most songs here, at least musically. The rhythm and flow are wonderful. And the self-empowerment present here is very appealing. But you also have to be able to stand the bratty tone of the singing as well as the lyrics. There is something very childish about the way these three girls posit them as wronged, but strong women. It doesn’t feel hard-earned so much as entitled. And yet no song has come as close to making me feel like a girly, teenage bitch and for once I love it. Beyoncé has returned to this mode from the viewpoint as a grown woman time and again and Lemonade is basically Survivor for adults, but really, she perfected it here already, without succumbing to delusion of grandeur yet. #851 in my top 1000.

10. John Parr – St. Elmos Fire (Man in Motion)
This one is easy. Everybody will probably agree this is cheesy as hell, a perfect distillation of the most ridiculous power pop of the eighties. Like the Pokémon Theme and Eye of the Tiger this is a real “power-pump” song, but here I can’t think of a single defence for it. It is a deeply stupid, corny and just bad song, yet I like it a lot and it gives me energy without fail. I guess I am very susceptible to this kind of song. Note: I always thought the line “I can see the banners fly” said “I can see the pandas fly”. It really diminishes the song that it isn’t. Not even considered for my top 1000 and never will be.

11. Neil Diamond – I Am… I Said
12. Whitesnake – Here I Go Again
13. Shirley Bassey – This Is My Life (La Vita)
14. Gipsy Kings – Hotel California
15. Emily McIntosh – Ashley’s Song
16. Irene Cara – Fame
17. Sheena Easton – For Your Eyes Only
18. Ceci Peniston – Finally
19. Bon-Jovi – Livin’ On a Prayer
20. Junichi Masuda – Route 1

159 | Neil Young with Barbra Streisand | You Don't Bring Me Flowers

Although I'd prefer to be wrong in this case, I think it's Neil Diamond.

Sorry, I'd like to do that thing where I put in an extra song, and drop everything down. I guess I didn't plan on including "Livin’ on a Prayer" because of its high AM rank, or because it's the crown jewel of Bon Jovi's ongoing success, or because it is transcendent and goofy at the same time...but that still makes it goofy. It is a ridiculous song with a stupid talk box effect, but I love the song (and probably even the talk box) and there's nothing I can do about that.

6. Bon Jovi - Livin’ on a Prayer (#439)

7. Night Ranger – Sister Christian (#478)

8. Celine Dion – If You Asked Me To (#504)

9. Kenny G – Songbird (#737)

10. Herman’s Hermits – I’m into Something Good (#745)

11. Crash Test Dummies – Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm (#773)

12. Amy Grant – Baby Baby (#876)

13. Debbie Gibson – Lost in Your Eyes (#925)

14. Color Me Badd – All 4 Love (#977)
I despise almost all boy-band music. This really isn’t that bad. The melody seems to show up at one point in “Blurred Lines.”

16. Vanilla Ice – Ice Ice Baby (#994)
I’ve been meaning to rap this song in its entirety as an answering machine message to somebody.

17. R.E.M. – Shiny Happy People

18. Britney Spears – Toxic
I would argue that this is not fundamentally different from the usual Britney Spears fare, just catchier.

19. MC Hammer – U Can’t Touch This
God, remember before rap had credibility, and this and Vanilla Ice were perfectly acceptable?

20. Loverboy – Working for the Weekend

21. Richard Marx – Hazard

22. Snow - Informer

23. Jewel – Standing Still

24. Jewel - Hands

25. Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart

26. REO Speedwagon – Keep on Loving You

27. Spin Doctors – Two Princes

28. Paula Abdul – Blowing Kisses in the Wind

29. Wham! – Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

30. Rick Derringer - Real American [i.e., Hulk Hogan's entrance music]

31. Stan Bush - The Touch

32. Rod Stewart - Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?

33. Europe – The Final Countdown

34. Huey Lewis and the News - Heart and Soul

35. Journey - Don’t Stop Believin’

36. Genesis - Invisible Touch
My 5th grade choir teacher, what passed for one, had us sing pop hits of the general era. A fair amount of the songs here are due to grade school, or a choir class or two.

37. The Beach Boys - Kokomo

38. Def Leppard – Pour Some Sugar on Me

39. Rascal Flatts – What Hurts the Most

41. Joe Esposito - You're the Best Around

42. Joey Scarbury - Theme from The Greatest American Hero (Believe It or Not)

43. Katy Perry - Dark Horse

44. Barenaked Ladies - One Week

45. Men Without Hats - Safety Dance

46. Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal

47. Katy Perry - The One That Got Away

48. Fergie - Glamorous

49. Club Nouveau - Lean on Me

50. Billy Joel – Uptown Girl

51. The Monkees - I’m a Believer

52. Boston - More Than a Feeling

53. Survivor - Burning Heart

54. Richard Marx - Hold On To The Nights

55. Meghan Trainor – All About That Bass

56. Chumbawumba – Tubthumper

57. Maroon 5 – Moves like Jagger

58. Milli Vanilli – Girl I’m Gonna Miss You

59. a-ha - Take On Me

60. Los Del Rio - Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)

61. Archies - Sugar, Sugar

62. C+C Music Factory - Gonna Make You Sweat

63. Christopher Cross - Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)

64. Meat Loaf - I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)
I still don't know how Meat Loaf, dead center in the grunge era, came from nowhere and hit #1 with a ten-minute song which is mostly him just singing the title, (and then went back to nowhere).

65. Spin Doctors - Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong

66. Semisonic - Closing Time

67. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John - We Go Together

68. Kriss Kross – Jump

69. OneRepublic - Counting Stars

70. Sugar Ray - Every Morning

71. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John - Summer Nights

72. Extreme – Hole Hearted

74. Pat Boone – Moody River

75. Extreme – More Than Words

76. Kenny Loggins - I'm Alright (Theme from "Caddyshack")

77. Chicago – Saturday in the Park

78. Bloodhound Gang – The Bad Touch

79. Bobby McFerrin – Don’t Worry, Be Happy

80. New Kids on the Block - You Got It (The Right Stuff)

81. REO Speedwagon - Take It on the Run

82. Ace of Base - The Sign

83. Gary Lewis & the Playboys - This Diamond Ring

84. Nicki Minaj - Super Bass

85. John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band - On the Dark Side
Is this like a name you come up with when you don’t think your band is gonna make it?

86. AKB48 – Koi Suru Fortune Cookie
What a wretched song. How dare this song exist. But it’s pretty catchy.

87. Lit - My Own Worst Enemy

88. Mr. Big – To Be with You
This is what I get for not jumping on the grunge bandwagon quickly in '92.

89. Kiss - Beth

90. Wings - Silly Love Songs

91. Rupert Holmes - Escape (The Pina Colada Song)

92. Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

93. Olivia Newton John and John Travolta - You're The One That I Want

94. Olivia Newton-John - Hopelessly Devoted to You

95. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Count On Us

96. Jennifer Lopez - If You Had My Love

97. Damn Yankees - Where You Goin' Now
Part 2: This is what I get for not jumping on the grunge bandwagon quickly in '92.

98. Sheena Easton - Morning Train (Nine to Five)

99. Vanilla Ice - Rosta Man
God, what kind of day is it when I'm putting a Vanilla Ice album track on a best-of list?

100. Timmy T – One More Try

I am simultaneously reading this thread and the AMF All-time song lists (regular and "extra-strength" versions) and sampling unfamiliar tunes. I'm probably blurring them together here and there but I suspect I'm discovering more new music I enjoy from this thread than the threads with the "better" music.
