Regarding the Bob Wills song in Mark Ellingham (USA) - The Rough Guide Book of Playlists: 5,000 Songs You Must Download (2007), I believe that it is actually "New San Antonio Rose" rather than "San Antonio Rose", since it connects it to the album "ANTHOLOGY, 1935-1973" which only has the "New" version.

The version of "All the Young Dudes" that appears on NME (UK) - Bowie: His Real Greatest Hits (2014) may actually be Mott the Hoople's version, or possibly both versions at once.

The way the synopsis is written and the fact they state "From Mott The Hoople..." seems to me that they do mean the Mott the Hoople version. If they meant the Bowie version they could've also said 'From (or 'appears on') Best of '69/'74'. But on the other hand, they do mention his '74 live album, so maybe they don't know themselves either. Also of note: for China Girl they explicitly say 'From: Let's Dance', and not the Bowie written, produced and featuring version released by Iggy Pop.

Side-note: I wasn't aware that Always Crashing in the Same Car or Kooks were hits.

From the page you posted, it looks like NME intended this as a list of Bowie's best songs (as songwriter), regardless of whether he recorded them first or not (although the entry for "China Girl" doesn't separately note Iggy's original recording, so I'm not 100% on that). Since they make a point of listing Mott's version here, this entry should probably be added to the total for that recording in the AM database. Is this the only entry on the NME list for which they did something like this?

EDIT: BobPatience's post above makes pretty much the same points as mine.

Here's the full article: http://manofmusic.clicforum.fr/t1169-Te ... in-NME.htm

All the other songs are Bowie recordings. But "Wild Is the Wind" is on there too, so it's not necessarily about Bowie's songwriting. I also believe that there was another "best Bowie songs" list that specifically listed Mott's version of "All the Young Dudes" (which is already accounted for on AM).

Isn't the 1971 version by The Wailers, with the 1976 version being a solo cover?

Aha, I guess it makes sense to keep it as 1976 then (even though Bunny sings on both recordings).

It also seems like it's the rest of the wailers on the backing vocals on the 1976 release (it might even be the same vocal track, it sounds very similair in pauses, phrasing etc.). Even the rhythm section should still be the Barrett brothers. So I guess you could consider it a re-recording. But I think that it's musically different enough to consider it a solo cover instead of a new version of the Wailers song. It's even got a different name (just an extra space, but still).

XTC's "Dear God" is a 1986 song, not a 1987 one.

The 1986 Anita Baker song is titled "Caught Up in the Rapture", not "Caught Up in a Rapture".

Charles Trenet "La Folle Complainte"

It seems that 1945 is the date of songwriting, the actual recording seems to be from 1951.

Ah, whoops! I use the spreadsheets you post for download as my source, and when I downloaded it (probably shortly after the update), it listed "Dear God" as a 1987 song.

The main site lists the Bangles' "Manic Monday" as 1986. January 27, 1986, according to Wikipedia. A few sites contest this.

Rate Your Music places it at 1985.
https://rateyourmusic.com/release/singl ... she_wants/

Discogs lists most of the issuings as 1985.
https://www.discogs.com/Bangles-Manic-M ... ster/64769

A recent Rolling Stone article about Prince mentions it as a December 1985 release.
The song was “Manic Monday.” He cut it in February 1984 with himself on lead vocals and Apollonia 6’s Jill Jones and Brenda Bennett singing backup. It came out in December 1985 as a recording by the Bangles and soared to Number Two on the Billboard Hot 100.

Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy

AM places this at 1989.
Wikipedia says 26 December 1988. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/She_Drives_Me_Crazy
Discogs has tons of 1988 issuings. https://www.discogs.com/Fine-Young-Cann ... ster/70216
Rate Your Music has 1989, but amongst the 8 issues, lists the [p] primary issue as 1988.
