AM Best Songs Poll Predictions

Post by StevieFan13 »

You knew it was coming: post here with your predictions about which songs are probably going to do well in the poll. The expected, the unexpected, the popular deep cuts and unpopular hits.

I guess the first question is: which songs from the current AM top 1,000 do you think will not make it? Given that it'll be the top 2,000 instead of 1,000, they very well could all make it. But which ones do you think have the lowest chance, given the forum's tastes?

Based on the eclectic but collective tastes I see among AMers, some that I feel might have a bit of trouble (unless I haven't been looking hard enough) are:

1000. Madness - Our House*
999. King Krule - Dum Surfer
992. Panda Bear - Bro's
990. Rae Sremmurd feat. Gucci Mane - Black Beatles
986. Van Halen - Runnin' with the Devil
980. Jimmie Rodgers - Blue Yodel (T for Texas)
977. Solange - Losing You*
976. The Allman Brothers Band - Ramblin' Man
972. Chuck Berry - Sweet Little Sixteen
968. Charli XCX - Boys*
966. The Contours - Do You Love Me*
960. Lonnie Donegan - Rock Island Line
948. Bob Dylan - All Along the Watchtower (I think Jimi Hendrix's version is gonna get in no problem, possibly top 100)
945. Future - Mask Off
944. Journey - Don't Stop Believin'*
942. Little Richard - Lucille
940. Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London*
921. Slade - Cum On Feel the Noize**
919. The O'Jays - Back Stabbers*
917. Naughty by Nature - O.P.P.*
905. Justin Timberlake feat. T.I. - My Love*
897. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five - The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel***
896. The Ventures - Walk - Don't Run
893. Rhythim is Rhythim - Strings of Life
864. Japandroids - The House That Heaven Built*
860. 50 Cent - In Da Club*
859. Lil Wayne - A Milli
855. The Crickets - Not Fade Away
851. Beyonce - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)
850. Run-DMC - It's Like That*
846. Klaxons - Golden Skans
831. The Penguins - Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)
828. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Crosstown Traffic
823. Nine Inch Nails - Hurt (while I wouldn't totally rule it out, it's much more likely that Johnny Cash's version will get in)
818. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Have You Ever Seen the Rain
817. Michael Jackson - Rock with You*
810. Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band - Night Moves
809. Kelis - Caught Out There*
800. Bobbie Gentry - Ode to Billie Joe*
799. Cardi B - Bodak Yellow*
796. Kiss - Rock and Roll All Nite
794. The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up
775. Drake feat. Majid Jordan - Hold On, We're Going Home*
767. Rihanna feat. Calvin Harris - We Found Love
753. Bo Diddley - I'm a Man
747. Usher - Climax*
735. Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock - It Takes Two*
715. Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up, Look Sharp*

694. The Coasters - Yakety Yak
684. Azealia Banks - 212
669. Missy Elliott - Work It*
660. The Weeknd - Can't Feel My Face
637. Britney Spears - ...Baby One More Time (if only Babydoll had voted...)
635. Kelis - Milkshake
624. Tyler, the Creator - Yonkers
612. The Knack - My Sharona*
604. Ian Dury - Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll
586. R. Kelly - Ignition (Remix) (and good riddance)
585. Salt 'n' Pepa - Push It*
554. Rihanna feat. Drake - Work
546. ZZ Top - La Grange*
494. Muddy Waters - Mannish Boy*
492. Robert Johnson - Cross Road Blues
487. The Everly Brothers - Cathy's Clown
483. Bo Diddley - Who Do You Love?
482. Little Richard - Good Golly Miss Molly
478. The Everly Bothers - Wake Up Little Susie
467. Ray Charles - I've Got a Woman*
441. Aerosmith - Walk This Way (not impossible, but I feel like the more likely slot is going to the version with Run-DMC)
432. Muddy Waters - Hoochie Coochie Man
402. Justice vs. Simian - Never Be Alone/We Are Your Friends (for such a famous song, I haven't heard people talk about it here very much)
315. Ritchie Valens - La Bamba*
314. Link Wray and His Ray Men - Rumble
301. The Teenagers feat. Frankie Lymon - Why Do Fools Fall in Love
297. The Who - I Can't Explain (could be way off the mark on this one - just doesn't seem to come up as often as other Who songs)
273. Sam Cooke - You Send Me
264. Drake - Hotline Bling
250. Alice Cooper - School's Out*
213. Them - Gloria (at the very least, while I wouldn't totally rule it out, Patti Smith's version looks like a safer bet)
203. The Rapture - House of Jealous Lovers* (again, not an obvious tanker, but considering how it severely faltered in the '00s poll, I have to wonder)
186. Buddy Holly - Peggy Sue
136. Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps - Be-Bop-A-Lula

* - please prove me wrong
** - Quiet Riot's version was better anyway
*** - should've voted for it, goddamn it

I think your list is pretty spot on looking over everyone’s lists, I only barely took Ramblin’ Man and Fix Up Look Sharp off my list so I hope somebody redeemed them in my absence and they make it in the final list!

I just got an idea for a tv-series, where everyone of us go to a therapist, talking about our frustration in creating our music lists.

On next week's episode, I worry about properly isolating all my deep cut recommendations when the spreadsheet is published... Plus a wacky visit from someone asking us to check out their death metal demos!

Poptimists might save Don't Stop Believin', similarly to how I believe they've saved Toto's Africa (a bunch of high votes for that one).

Also if there's only room for one cheesy 80s arena rock song on the list, it better be Africa over Don't Stop Believin'

A not-so-obvious song that I see having an outsider's chance at the top 100, given how many lists it's appeared on and how high, is "Don't Look Back in Anger" by Oasis. I also see a likely top 10 spot, possibly top 5, for Bohemian Rhapsody.

The songs I counted with multiple #1 votes were Billie Jean, All My Friends, and Strange Fruit, so I'm guessing they all do well. (Last time, the only ones with multiple #1 votes were All My Friends and Smells Like Teen Spirit, but I'm guessing Nirvana are still going to do alright for themselves).

Oh! I also counted a fourth song with two top marks: Bruce Springsteen’s “Thunder Road.” So unlike last time, there are double the songs with multiple top scores and one of the ones from last time lost one. That was a confusing sentence.

As (I believe) the only top 10 voter for that song, I'm hoping it makes a much better showing in our poll! Cursory looking at the thread leads me to believe it will make top 500.

One phenomenon is the trouble when you have to throw out one more song, e.g. you have 101 songs you want to put into a top 100. I pick a victim, but then suffer from the earworm syndrome: the song I threw out gets stuck in my head for the rest of the day, until I put it back in and pick another victim. :x

For the 1950s poll I had this with Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree by The Andrews Sisters.

For me, it was a combination of new songs entering my radar and straight-up forgetting songs that were once in my top 100. The only reason songs like Shook Ones, Somebody to Love, and Kiss weren’t higher were due to me slapping my head after finishing a section, wondering how I forgot them, and putting them as high as I could without changing the top 100.

Based on faulty intuition only (no reviews of others lists or prior poll results), I wouldn't be surprised if the following didn't make the top 200:

177. Cream / Sunshine Of Your Love 1967
188. MC5 Kick Out the Jams 1969
191. Animal Collective My Girls 2009
197. Dylan, Bob Subterranean Homesick Blues 1965

My guess is that there are no songs in the top 200 that fail to make our poll's top 1000.

But, 136. Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps - Be-Bop-A-Lula could be a possibility.

Hard to believe that Buddy Holly's Peggy Sue would drop below 1000. But, stranger things have happened.

My four least favorite in the top 200 are:

120. Sugarhill Gang Rapper's Delight 1979
180. Iggy Pop & the Stooges Search and Destroy 1973
115. LCD Soundsystem Losing My Edge 2002
139. MGMT Time to Pretend 2007

There was a phenomenon I ran into that I'd call, "You really can't put this song [that I just thought of] at #1,000?" So that spot was surprisingly fought over a bit.

Plus I oddly had a punk rock phase, and suddenly didn't care much for that pop/rock shit (i.e., 99% of my list). Fortunately the list just took so long to make that I had time to regain perspective.

Songs that may not make it into our top 1000:

525. Easybeats Friday On My Mind 1966
537. Lovin' Spoonful Do You Believe In Magic? 1965
541. Free All Right Now 1970
550. Sparks This Town Ain't Big enough for the Both of Us 1974

I hope to be surprised by some unexpected notorious pop songs. That would be fun.

Already several of these haven't made our top 1000 (off the top of my head, Push It and Be-Bop-A-Lula didn't).

Most sad: A lot of picks from our women's poll are already out. There's probably a maximum of 300 songs by women left.
Most happy: Beach House's "Take Care" in top 2000. Thank you Gillingham!

As for notorious pop songs, we've already got "Closer" by the Chainsmokers and "How You Remind Me" by Nickelback. That quota's been filled!

There's definitely at least one Linkin Park song, one Paramore song, and one Journey song left.

Predictions for top ranked 2010s song?

Purely going off of RYM, I'll say "Runaway" or "Lazarus".

Will there be a 2017 song higher than this? It beat Green Light; I can't remember if Humble placed yet though.

There are a lot of songs there that are huge popular favorites, especially in the top half and I have a feeling they will only do better this year than in 2015.

There's one more bubbling track from the 2010s that I feel like still has a chance of getting a spot in heaven... if it does, I'll be very happy. If it doesn't, I'll be disappointed.
