Recommendations for 2010s (Who's still rocking out?)

Post by Live in Phoenix »

As I near my reading glasses age, I have been paying less attention to the current music scene, but it surprised me that when starting up a tentative best-of-2010s song list, I had almost no rock music, like it's sort of a genre of days past. If I turn on my alternative rock radio station (I guess I should know better), I usually hear rock from some years/decades past mixed in with what sounds like bad Imagine Dragons (or is that redundant), i.e. white-guy dance pop. The top rock band of our era, Radiohead, has barely rocked out for 20 years, not to say that it's less legitimate to branch out. Bowie's great album The Next Day is one of the few prominent 2010s rock albums, and it might be considered kind of a throwback or an anomaly.

Anyway, what would anyone recommend in terms of albums or singles this decade that rock out? It doesn't have to be commercial fare.

I've been impressed by Turbowolf's output. Not sure if you'll like their albums as a whole, but they have songs I feel I worth checking out.

There is actually a lot of great rock when you go looking for it and someone who does love to rock out myself I'm always on the lookout for it (it remains the greatest energizer genre in the world to me). If I have more time I will probably recommend some more, but for now I can't stress Ty Segall enough. Very classic in many ways, but if you simply want to rock out and also enjoy some virtuoso playing, this it the guy to go to. His latest album, Freedom's Goblin might end up being his magnum opus. It's almost 75 minutes long, but it rocks on and on and on.

Another one that quickly comes to mind is Arctic Monkey's AM, but that is one of the most famous rock albums of the decade I think, so I guess you have heard of it.

My favorites of the decades that would fall reasonably in the 'Rock' genre without bordering on folk or electronic.

Don't know whether you're looking for the indie/alt side of rock or the more hard rocking side of rock.

The National - Trouble Will Find Me, High Violet
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake, The Hope Six Demolition Project
Perfume Genius - too Bright
Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest
Royal Headache - High
David Bowie - Blackstar
Sleater-Kinney - No Cities To Love
Foxygen - We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace & Magic
St Vincent - Masseduction
LCD Soundsystem - American Dream

I usually think of "rocking out" (and doesn't rock love to be defined?) as including, but not limited to, guitar-bass-drums banging away, so that would include either subgenre. That's the easy definition, anyway.
