Rickie Lee Jones - Chuck E's In Love

7 - Some good pop with a great tune - but to me it really sounds like an American sitcom theme, or something that could be used as one. Just that slight air of tackiness.

Dusty Springfield - Goin' Back

5 - Decent ballad but it didn't really stand out at all.

Goldfrapp - Strict Machine

8 - I thought this was really good! I'm not so familiar with Goldfrapp but I'm keen to try more after this.

Klaatu – Long Live Politzania

3 - I like some of the elements of this but the whole thing's a weird mess. I'm not too into this style of prog either.

Diana Ross – I’m Still Waiting

6 - A sweet song, and Diana is always welcome

The Weeknd - Tell Your Friends: 4
I never really know what to do with things like this. It actually sounds very good, but then the lyrics hit and I just hear The Weeknd bragging about his sex life and, curiously, his drugs addiction ("Don't believe the rumors bitch, I'm still a user
I'm still rocking camo, I still roll with shooters"). He found his audience here and apparently people look up to this, but I just don't have a clue were the attraction to this is. But apparently it is real living ("Singing bout poppin' pills, fucking bitches, living life, so true"). Not the "true life" I am chasing. Of course this reaction shouldn't bother The Weeknd in the slightest, but I don't bother with him either, unless forced to.

17. Klaatu – Long Live Politzania
Don't know the band at all. a funny and disorganized song, not unpleasant 5/10
18. Diana Ross – I’m Still Waiting
Not a masterpiece but a sweet little candy... not good for my cholesterol 4.5/10
19. The Weeknd – Tell Your Friends 3/10
A nice surprise for a song from The Weeknd, but as usual for him, autotune completely ruins his voice, it's unhearable to listen. (5.5 if not completely autotuned)
20. Organized Konfusion – Bring It On 2.5/10
Rap... sorry.

The Weeknd – Tell Your Friends
4 - Pros: the end of the song shifts into high gear with the sudden guitar and I really like that part. Cons: the lyrics, it's kinda boring and also the autotune bit in the middle where it sounds like the end of Runaway.

Organized Konfusion – Bring It On
7 - These are some fun raps, I'm into it

The Weeknd - 1.5
Diana Ross - 6 - I'm sure I'd have hated this when I was in my 20s. Rather liking it now.
Klaatu - 7.5 - I'd never heard of Klaatu before. This is wonderfully bonkers! [I found that Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft is a Klaatu song, didn't know the Carpenters were covering it - I've always loved the fact the Carpenters recorded such a bizarre song.]
Goldfrapp - 8 - This would've been close to making my list. Though I actually remember being disappointed at the time, as their previous album (Felt Mountain) was sublime, and this was a big shift to a more commercial sound.

That's interesting, because Pharaohe's rhyming and flow reminded me of Eminem. It is really what makes this song. The way he keeps the rhymes on coming, with that insane tempo, while still maintaining a coherence in actual lyrical content is quite thrilling. If only he had something better to say than, like a million other rappers before and after him, "I am the greatest person ever and you all are nothing", then I could have seen this become one of my favorite rap tracks. The rest of the track is not as innovative as Pharaoh, but bangs along nicely.

The ladies saved the week for me…

1. Rickie Lee Jones | Chuck E.'s in Love | 8
2. Goldfrapp | Strict Machine | 8
3. Dusty Springfield | Goin' Back | 7
4. Diana Ross | I'm Still Waiting | 7
5. The Weeknd | Tell Your Friends | 5
6. Organized Konfusion | Bring It On | 4
7. Klaatu | Long Live Politzania | 4

The story behind "Chuck E.'s in Love" according to Wikipedia: "Jones and her lover/fellow songwriter Tom Waits spent a lot of time hanging out with their friend Chuck E. Weiss at the seedy Tropicana Motel in Los Angeles. Eventually Weiss, affectionately referred to as "Chuck E.", disappeared. Later Weiss called the apartment where Jones and Waits lived. When Waits took the call, Weiss explained that he was in Denver, and that he had moved there because he had fallen in love with a cousin in Colorado. When Waits hung up he announced to Jones, "Chuck E.'s in love." Jones liked the sound of the sentence and wrote a song around it. Although toward the end of "Chuck E.'s in Love" the lyrics state, "Chuck E.'s in love with the little girl singing this song," the twist ending is fictional; Jones was never the girl with whom Chuck E. was in love."

Bit late on this but here's my ratings:

1) Muddy Waters - Good News: 6 (solid but not particularly memorable)
2) Elton John - Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock And Roll): 7 (one of the more lightweight tracks on that album but I still like it a lot)
3) JJ Cale - Magnolia: 6 (enjoyable but again not that memorable - perhaps a bit too laid back)
4) (Sandy) Alex G - Proud: 8 (rocket was one of my favourite albums of 2017)
5) Sun City Girls - The Shining Path: 4 (Vocals a bit screechy for me, and a bit tuneless)
6) Middle Kids - Edge of Town: 8 (Really surprised me how much i liked this one - great guitar tone in the chorus!)
7) Hot Tuna - Water Song: 5 (Pleasant enough but just wasn't my type of song)
8) LMFAO - Yes: 1 (Reminder of that period in the early 2010s when pop music was as obnoxious as possible)
9) The Chainsmokers and Coldplay - Something Just Like This: 3 (Started alright - goes downhill from the 'drop')
10) Exuma - Love is Strange: 4 (Love the original but this version didnt do it for me)
11) Puddle of Mudd - Blurry: 5 (Nothing special but nice surprise given i was expecting some sort of obnoxious Limp Bizkit-esque nu-metal)
12) The Stooges - Fun House: 8 (Love every moment on this album and this track is no exception)
13) Queen - Good Company: 6 (Fairly likeable bit of nonsense)
14) Rickie Lee Jones - Chuck E's In Love: 9 (Very nearly made my list - she should be much more well known)
15) Dusty Springfield - Goin' Back: 7 (Can't really go wrong with Dusty in the 60s)
16) Goldfrapp - Strict Machine: 6 (Can see the appeal but sounds fairly dated to me)
17) Klaatu - Long Live Politzania: 6 (Bizarre but quite enjoyable)
18) Diana Ross - I'm Still Waiting: 7 (Like Dusty, most of Diana Ross' tracks from this period are pretty likeable)
19) The Weeknd - Tell Your Friends: 5 (Love the instrumental and production but the lyrics are as generic and uninspired as they get - anything using words like 'flexing' which isn't a fun hip-hop song is not for me)
20) Organized Konfusion - Bring It On: 9 (Great production and great rapping - reminded me a bit of Kool Keith back in the day, or early Eminem. Shame their stuff isnt on spotify)
21) Kevin Coyne - I Only Want To See You Smile: 7 (Not as good as the stuff on Marjory Razorblade, which is one of the most underrated lps of the 1970s, but still pretty good)

In that case I recommend Trip Thru Hell, Pt. 1. It's 9 minutes long of this stuff, before the messy part. I think it better than Part. 2 and a great, great recording. In fact, I listened to this whole album today and fell in love. Wonderful playing and very original still. Guess for which album game I'm going to nominate it. This particular song, Pt. 2, is not it's highlight in my opinion, but is still very strong.

Derek and the Dominos - It's Too Late: 6

I remember buying the album based on my love for Layla alone and being hugely disappointed. I think I only listened to it one time since. Perhaps it deserves another chance, but this song (which I didn't recall) gives me mixed feelings. I notice this is pretty solid blues, nothing wrong in the execution. These are certainly talented players. Still, it isn't unique enough to be a huge genre standout and that's coming from someone unfamiliar with the versions of Otis Redding and Chuck Willis.
