Song #68 was "Eleanor Rigby" from 1968. The other Beatles song that Ray had a hit with was "Yesterday." Of all of the hundreds (if not thousands) of versions of "Yesterday" Ray is the only artist other then the Beatles to have a top 40 hit with the song. Ray's version of "Eleanor Rigby" was included in the album "A Portrait of Ray."

Song #67 is "Here We Go Again" from 1967. Ray redid the song as a duet with Norah Jones in 2004. In December 2004, the Jones–Charles version of the song was nominated in two categories at the 47th Grammy Awards. At the February 13, 2005 awards ceremony, the duet earned the award for Record of the Year and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. It was the second Record of the Year winner not to make the Hot 100 (following "Walk On" in 2001 by U2).

"Here We Go Again" is a country music standard written by Don Lanier and Red Steagall that first became notable as a rhythm and blues single by Ray Charles from his 1967 album Ray Charles Invites You to Listen. It was produced by Joe Adams for ABC Records/Tangerine Records. To date, this version of the song has been the biggest commercial success, spending twelve consecutive weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number 15.

Song #66 is "Feelin' Sad" from 1953. The movie "Ray" was sensational, and Jamie Foxx was awesome in the lead role, but they did not cover the time that Ray spent in New Orleans, which was about 9 months in late 1953 and 1954. This was when he was still trying to find his own sound after years of trying to sound like Nat King Cole and Charles Brown. Ray really liked local star Eddie "Guitar Slim" Jones, and he even played piano on Slim's monster hit "The Things I Used To Do." "Feelin' Sad" was originally a hit for Guitar Slim in late 1952, and Ray liked it and recorded his own version in 1953.

Song #61 was "My Baby! (I Love Her Yes I Do)" from 1960. Really good record, but a failure as far as sales go as it failed to chart at all. ABC must have been nervous after all the money and other consideration they gave Ray to pry him away from Atlantic. Margie Hendrix is great on this one and gets label credit on the 45.

The song was originally recorded by Casey Bill Waldon in 1936. There were hit versions in the 1940s by Louis Jordan and by Jimmie Lunceford.

Song #56 was "Seven Spanish Angels" which is a duet with Ray and Willie Nelson. It was on the "Friendship" album in 1984. The song was written by Troy Seals and Eddie Setser. It was the most successful of Charles' eight hits on the country chart. The single spent one week at number one and a total of twelve weeks on the country chart.

Setser had suggested the title "Seven Spanish Angels" and he and Seals had written the song as a homage to the tejano flavored classic hits of Marty Robbins exemplified by Robbins' career record "El Paso": (Troy Seals quote:) "When we finished it we thought 'Who in the world's gonna do it?' because Marty was [deceased]." Within two days "Seven Spanish Angels" had been successfully pitched to Willie Nelson. Before Nelson was able to record it, producer Billy Sherrill happened to hear the demo and wanted the song for Ray Charles. Sherrill proposed that Nelson and Charles duet on the song after learning of Nelson's having reserved it.

This and the flip side (Hide 'Nor Hair) were heading up the charts in April of 1962, but were derailed when ABC rushed out "I Can't Stop Loving You" as a single, due to popular demand. "At The Club" stalled at #44 while the flip side did get to #20 before falling off.

Song #50 is "Come Back" as it was called on the original release. On most albums it is shown as "Come Back Baby." Ray's version is on the flip side of "I've Got A Woman" which was released late in 1954. "Come Back" was a hit in its own right, reaching #4 on the Billboard R&B DJ chart, and #9 on the sales chart. I think it was probably listed as just "Come Back" because Ray listed himself as the writer when in fact it was an older song from 1940, and maybe he thought that it might be easier to get away with the theft with a bit of a different title.

The song was done in 1940 originally by Walter Davis, who wrote the song.

Ray knew the song from Lowell Fulson, whose band he was with for a while in the late 1940s. Lowell's version was also shown as "Come Back Baby" and was an R&B chart hit in 1949.

Song #46 was Ray's first single for Atlantic, "Roll With My Baby" from 1952. He was still in his full on Nat King Cole imitating days on this one, and it is highly reminiscent of Nat's huge 1944 hit "Straighten Up And Fly Right." The song was included on the "What'd I Say" album in 1959.

Song #45 was "That Lucky Old Sun" from 1963. It was on the "Ingredients In A Recipe For Soul" album and is the first of two songs from that album to show up here. The single reached #20 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song was written in 1949 with music by Beasley Smith and words by Haven Gillespie. The biggest hit version of the song in 1949 was from Frankie Laine, but there were many versions at the time, including hit versions from Frank Sinatra and from Louis Armstrong.

Song #44 was "I Don't Need No Doctor" from 1966. The song was written by Nick Ashford, Valerie Simpson, and Jo Armstead. First released by Nick Ashford on Verve in August 1966, it went nowhere. It was then picked up and recorded by Ray Charles and released in October 1966. I prefer the Nick Ashford version, which you can hear below. It has a Motown sound.

Over the years, the song has been done by bands such as garage rock band The Chocolate Watchband in 1969, Humble Pie in 1971, New Riders of the Purple Sage in 1972, metal band W.A.S.P. in 1986, by rock band Great White in 1987, and by the garage punk band The Nomads in 1989. Styx also covered this song. Humble Pie's version became an FM radio hit and reached #73 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

Song #43 was "Heartbreaker" from 1953. In September 1953 Ray Charles released his fourth single for Atlantic records; the B-side to “Feelin’ Sad” was the rhythmic blues song “Heartbreaker”, written like Ray’s recent hit “Mess Around” by his label’s boss Ahmet Ertegun (under the name “A. Nugetre”).

“Heartbreaker” is a very simple and rollicking tune, pulled along with a pulsing, insistent pop-pop, clop rhythm and Ray’s merrily dancing piano. A bass provides the low notes, and over the top of it all Ray holds forth about a “bobbysoxer and a mean mistreater too” whose charms confound and exhaust him.

Ertegun’s lyrics for “Heartbreaker”, like those of “Mess Around”, consist largely of a mishmash of blues cliches. Except for the reference to bobbysoxers (really a 1940s phenomenon) there is little lyrical dexterity here. But it doesn’t really matter: the point is the groove of the music; the lively bang and sway of the hot band.

It’s also, of course, Ray’s wondrous singing voice that really makes “Heartbreaker” shine. The fact that the words don’t amount to too much is immaterial; what matters is that they’re easy enough for him to identify with that he can wail and scream them with real abandon. He had been developing quickly into his own weighty, gritty wail voice since his latter days with Jack Lauderdale’s Swing Time label on which he’d developed from a crooner to a screamer. “Heartbreaker” shows how comfortable he was with his own voice.

It's the second song to come up from the album "The Genius of Ray Charles," and there are two more songs from that album that are still to come. Ray's version reached No. 17 on Billboard's "Hot R&B Sides" and No. 95 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was written by Joe Greene and first released in 1946 by Louis Jordan And His Tympany Five. Jordan's version reached No. 3 in Billboard's chart of "Most-Played Juke Box Race Records."

Louis Jordan was perhaps the biggest influence on artists of Ray's generation, and Ray recorded several songs that were hits by Jordan, including one that is much higher on our countdown.

Song #41 was "Baby It's Cold Outside" from Ray with Betty Carter" in 1961. They had made an entire album together.

There were several different hit versions of this song in 1949, and this one did make the Billboard Hot 100, although it only peaked in the 90s on that chart. The song written by Frank Loesser in 1944, and it gained wide recognition in 1949 when it was performed in the film Neptune's Daughter. The song won the 1949 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Loesser wrote "Baby, It's Cold Outside" to sing with his wife, Lynn Garland, at their housewarming party in New York City at the Navarro Hotel. They sang the song to indicate to guests that it was time to leave.

Garland has written that after the first performance, "We became instant parlor room stars. We got invited to all the best parties for years on the basis of 'Baby.' It was our ticket to caviar and truffles. Parties were built around our being the closing act." In 1948, after years of performing the song, Loesser sold it to MGM for the 1949 romantic comedy Neptune's Daughter. Garland was furious: "I felt as betrayed as if I'd caught him in bed with another woman."

Song #40 was "In The Heat of the Night" from 1967. It was the theme song of the Oscar winning movie of the same name, starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. The single got to #33 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was composed by Quincy Jones, with lyrics by by Marilyn Bergman and Alan Bergman. As Matthew Greenwald of AllMusic states, the song "opens the film and accompanying soundtrack with a slice of real, rural backwoods gospel. Lyrically, one of the key lines is 'In the heat of the night/I'm feeling motherless somehow,' which clearly illustrates the main character's dilemma of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The main melody is guided by Charles' funky piano work and is buttressed by then-session ace Billy Preston's powerful, soulful organ trills. The underlying sense of drama that is so much a part of the film is reflected perfectly in this song, and the Ray Charles Singers add to this with a stately grace. It's perfect listening for a midsummer night when the temperature is just a bit too hot for comfort."

I'm not a big fan of the record, but I will say that the ridiculously high notes that Ray sings on the last line of the song are very impressive.

Song #39 was "Losing Hand" from 1954. It was the flip side of the hit "Don't You Know." Recorded in New York City on May 17, 1953 in the same session that produced Mess Around, Losing Hand is a soulful blues written by Jesse Stone who worked for Atlantic as a producer, songwriter, and arranger. The song was released as a single with the composer identified as Charles E. Calhoun. On Ertegun’s advice, Stone used the pseudonym on his BMI tunes to avoid conflict with his membership in the other music licensing society, ASCAP. Stone was critical to the Atlantic Records label. He later wrote Shake Rattle and Roll, discovered the Raelettes, Ray Charles’ backing vocals group (remember the juicy call and response in What’d I Say?), and wrote many other hits for the label’s artists.

The single charted at #72 on the Billboard Hot 100 and got to #10 on the Billboard R&B chart. The song was written by Percy Mayfield and Ray. The song was written by Lloyd Glenn and Lowell Fulson, and the original version was by Fulson in 1951, with Lloyd Glenn on piano. I like the Fulson version a bit better than Ray's reading.

Song #33 was "Yes Indeed" from 1958. It was of course included on the album of the same name. The song was written by Sy Oliver and it goes back the the Big Band era where is was done by Bing Crosby, Tommy Dorsey and many others. The Tommy Dorsey was a top 5 hit in 1941, and features vocals by the author Sy Oliver along with Jo Stafford.

Song #32 was "I'm Movin' On" from 1959. Somehow they included this on the album "The Genius Sings The Blues." It is of course a remake of a country song that was a huge hit for Hank Snow in 1950, staying at number one on the Billboard Country chart for 21 weeks. This was 3 years before the "Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music" album, so that concept was not exactly new for Ray in 1962.

"I'm Moving On" is one of three songs in the history of the Billboard country charts to spend 21 weeks at #1, the others being 1947's "I'll Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You in My Arms)" by Eddy Arnold and 1955's "In the Jailhouse Now" by Webb Pierce. It spent 44 weeks in Billboard's top 10. Until August 2013, the three songs jointly held the record for most weeks at No. 1 on the country chart, until being surpassed by "Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line, which logged its 22nd week atop the chart on August 10, 2013.

Ray's version features congas and maracas, giving the Spanish tinge to a country and western song. It peaked at #40 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. Check out the scan of an original 78 below. This is very late for a record to be pressed on a 78, 1959.

Song #30 was "Sticks And Stones" from 1960. It got to #2 on the Billboard R&B chart and peaked at #40 on the Hot 100. In a way it's sort of like "What'd I Say" part 3. It was not part of any album until ABC issued a Greatest Hits package on Ray a couple of years later. The song was written by Titus Turner. I don't think that Turner had his own version of the song out before Ray's version, but I could be wrong about that. Can't find a 45 where Turner does the song himself.

Song #29 was "Mary Ann" from 1956. The title of course refers to Mary Ann Fisher, who was the main female backup singer for Ray even before the Cookies came aboard. Her and Ray were doing much more than just singing together, if you know what I mean!

"Mary Ann" was the flip side of "Drown In My Own Tears" and was a jukebox hit in its own right. The song features Latin rhythms. Mary Ann left Ray in 1958. In the movie "Ray" she is shown smashing the windshield of Ray's car before she departs.

Song #27 is "Born To Lose" from 1962. The song is from the "Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music" album, and is also the flip side of the monster hit "I Can't Stop Loving You" on the single. "Born To Lose" reached #41 on Billboard's Hot 100 Pop Singles chart.

Ted Daffan's Texans did the original version and it was a big country hit in 1944 although it was originally released in 1942. It features a vocal by Leon Seago.

Song #25 is "This Little Girl of Mine" from 1955. It reached #9 on the Billboard R&B Jukebox list, and the flip side, "A Fool For You" reached #2 on that same jukebox list. It's a very good record, but I like the Everly Brothers version a bit better myself. Ray listed himself as the writer of the song despite the fact that he just took a gospel song "This Little Light of Mine" and changed some words around. As a single it was number one on the Billboard R&B chart and it reached #7 on the Pop Chart. The song is listed as being written by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell and first recorded in 1939. It has been declared one of the state songs of Louisiana because of its association with Davis, a country music singer and governor of the state in the years 1944–1948 and 1960–1964. While Davis and Mitchell are the credited songwriters of "You Are My Sunshine", Davis was never known to actually claim authorship, as he bought the song and rights from Paul Rice and put his own name on it, a practice not uncommon in the pre-World War II music business. The original version of the song was released by the Pine Ridge Boys in 1939.

"Come Rain or Come Shine" is a popular music song written by Harold Arlen, who composed the music, and Johnny Mercer, who wrote the lyrics. The song was written for the musical St. Louis Woman, which opened on March 30, 1946, and closed after 113 performances.

Song #21 was "America The Beautiful" from 1972. It is from the album "A Message From The People." Ray's version has become a classic that is now in the Grammy Hall of Fame. The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. The two never met.

Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, "Pikes Peak", first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time, the poem was titled "America" for publication. Ward had originally written the music, "Materna", for the hymn "O Mother dear, Jerusalem" in 1882, though it was not first published until 1892. Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful. The song is one of the most popular of the many U.S. patriotic songs.
