Since I have not seen any thread for this : )

The ever-brilliant Perfume Genius just covered one of my favorite songs from last year "When I'm With Him" by Empress Of. It is predictably both devastating and beautiful.

Best song of the year by far for me is Lana Del Rey's "hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have - but i have it".

Totally random, no real order, songs I've liked this year...

Sharon Van Etten- Seventeen
Deafheaven- Black Brick
James Blake (featuring Travis Scott and Metro Boomin)- Mile High
Solange (featuring Playboi Carti)- Almeda
Carly Rae Jepsen- Now That I Found You
Carly Rae Jepsen- No Drug Like Me
Better Oblivion Community Center- Dylan Thomas
Vampire Weekend- Harmony Hall
Four Tet- Only Human
Helado Negro- Running

There were some other songs from the Sharon Van Etten and Malibu Ken albums that would be here too, but alas, they were released last year.

Really enjoying “101 FM” off of that Little Simz album. Great rapping, and a vaguely... traditional Japanese (?) sounding instrumental.

"SAPPY" by Red Velvet is undoubtedly one of the most brilliant pop songs of the year. The off-beat playing of the brass section (among their signature sounds), those intricate harmonies (I cannot name a girl group who utilize better harmony) and that bombastic chorus.

So far my 2019 playlist is only 3 songs (in no order)
1 | Paul McCartney | Get Enough
2 | Leyla McCalla | Money is King
3 | Dean Lewis | Be Alright

But most of my listening has been focused on 80s music for the decade polls right now.

I do have a secondary "sampling" playlist with 76 tunes on it that I'll (eventually) get around to.

I’m only a casual fan of Four Tet, but I think this is the best thing he’s ever done. He needs to release an album that sounds like this real soon.

Seconded. Lil Nas X is giving me the same vibes I got out of the Odd Future crew back in 2011 - they're very skilled at capturing specific cultural moments and will likely mature into very successful and idiosyncratic artists.

Counterpoints:
1) Uh, #1 song in America by no slight margin whatsoever, definitely not an unpopular opinion.
2) "Old Town Road" is pretty good.
3) "Old Town Road (Remix)" goes fucking hard.

Side point:
4) Certainly a country song.

That song packs a ton of hooks into a sub-two minute run time. I have no idea how the critics will treat it but it's probably here to stay from a pop culture perspective.

:o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

Jenny's last album EXORCISM was a life-changer for me. This album was apparently recorded at the same time, and combines her unnerving electronic edge with orchestral swells courtesy of a Swedish symphony to great effect. It deals with the same subject matter as EXORCISM: the rape she suffered a few years ago and the impacts it had on her. She felt the need to relay the message in her native Swedish (her first Swedish album it seems).

This song in particular is absolutely spellbinding. It starts off plaintive, with piano and strings tugging at heartstrings as the words flow tenderly from Jenny like opulent pearls, gradually building until the song erupts in volcanic, pulsing electronic fury 2 minutes in, Jenny's lyrics now gushing forth like dragon's breath as she relays the horrors of what happened to her and the full orchestra takes flight. It retreats again into vulnerable tenderness, twinkling xylophones glistening like stars and eerie strings filling the night sky with fog before the electronic pulse takes hold again. The word "epic" has had its meaning bludgeoned to death from overuse, but it is an appropriate descriptor here. It is so grandiose, so visual, so spectacularly all-encompassing that it feels like a stage play condensed into a song.

I've tried to translate the lyrics through Google, so I'm sure they are missing some of the context of her native Swedish, but I'll share them anyway. Her bravery is downright heroic.

The moon saw it happening
But turned away his gaze

Beyond protection from stars
Oh, I know, I know
The stars shit on me well

Night's last hour
I barely breathe, I lie still
But I long for it

The moon saw it happen
But how the hell will it help me?

Night's last hour
I'm looking forward to tomorrow
But there is nothing tomorrow, tomorrow

This is what happened
You know that,
You if anyone knows everything about what happened
Say what happened, say what happened
Say what happened, you know exactly what happened
Say what happened, say what happened
Say what happened, you know what happened

Because you held your hand straight over my mouth
And you pushed me down, you were fucking heavy
And you twisted and turned, you pulled and tied
That was what happened, was it the power you knew?
The pre-historic dragon had begun to wake up,
I became a pre-historic dragon
Anger wriggles out of me!

You pulled my hair, you tied me back,
Ripped off my panties, stuffed your thing in
And you felt the power
You turned on power
When you felt power?
Did you get out of power?
The pre-historic dragon had begun to wake up,
I became a pre-historic dragon
You know what has happened

This is what happened
You know that
You if anyone knows everything about what happened
Say what happened, say what happened
Say what happened, you know exactly what happened

Say what happened, say what happened
Say what happened, you know what has happened

I had thought that based on the first three tracks she released, but Julien and Too Much, the two most recent releases, are both excellent. Julien is my favorite track of hers since Cut to the Feeling; it's quite a grower.

I just found out that Of Monsters and Men got out a new song two weeks ago, Alligator.
And man is it a departure from their previous work; they went from indie folk to basically dance rock.

I'm not as much a fan of this song as I am of their other work, although I really like Nanna's vocals, and it's certainly not bad.
Now we'll have to wait and see what the rest of Fever Dream will bring, hopefully it's still got some of that Folk in there.

Anyway here's my top 25 for the year so far (maybe some 2018 songs have snuck in here, not 100% sure)

1. Sports Team - M5
2. Vampire Weekend - Harmony Hall
3. White Lies - Tokyo
4. Of Monster and Men - Alligator
5. Cage the Elephant - Ready To Let Go

6-25 in no particular order:
Jade Bird - I Get No Joy
Call It Off - Maybe I Don't Wanna Know
Courtney Barnett - Everybody Here Hates You
Dakota - Dreams
Editors - Barricades
Billie Eilish - Bad Guy
Billie Eilish - Bury A Friend
Fidlar - By Myself
Foals - Exits
Fontaines D.C. - Big
Japanese House - You Seemed So Happy
Mozes & the Firstborn - Blow Up
Pip Blom - Daddy Issues
Pip Blom - Ruby
Rammstein - Radio
SWMRS - Trashbag Baby
Tame Impala - Patience
Two Door Cinema Club - Talk
Vampire Weekend - This Life
Yungblud - Loner

Not sure if I love Sufjan's new track Love Yourself on first listen. It sounds a little too middle of the road for him. Were it not for his unmistakable voice, I might not even recognize it as a Sufjan song. Hopefully it's a grower.

Meanwhile, on first listen Sleater-Kinney's new track is a nice return to form. I'll probably end up liking it better than any of the tracks on No Cities to Love.

It might come across as middle of the road synthpop at first, but as usual with Sufjan, after listening to it a few times it develops into something more expansive and layered (to me anyway). I love the unapologetic positivity of it, especially as it’s such a contrast to the dejection that characterizes so many of his songs. I also love the subtle synths. Synths can be sharp and cold, but on this song they are warm and glowing, which suits his style of singing. I liked the song the first time I heard it, but after listening to it about 10 times over the past couple of days, it keeps growing on me.

I do like the song, but it's a bit too 'poppy' for me to rate it anything high, though it might grow on me if I hear it some more this month. It also sounds like a song that would do well in an acoustic orchestral setting, so here's hoping for that happening. And lastly, the song really reminds me of The Zombies' 'This Will Be Our Year'.
