Another one I’m very surprised wasn’t on my list. Yyz is an 8.

Aw, Rush. As mocked as beloved. As dated, as totally unique. I find you hard to dislike, you old weirdo. Yyz is another one of your very silly songs, but I can't help being a bit impressed yet again.

31. Girls in Hawaii - Catwalk - 4
32. Jenny Lewis – Acid Tongue - 7
33. Riot – You Burn in Me - 6
34. Fergie, featuring Ludacris - Glamorous - 2
I was just talking about how weird and bad the BEP/Fergie output is last night. This... fits that trend.
35. Avenged Sevenfold - Fiction - 7
36. Labi Siffre – (Something Inside) So Strong - 7
In this case, something so strong could carry me away
37. Queen – All Dead, All Dead - 5
38. Los Saicos - Demolición - 8
39. KT Tunstall – Suddenly I See - 9
Big favourite from high school. Loving the energy.
40. Rush - Yyz - 9
I love the guitar in this piece. If I was doing a list for the instrumentals poll, this would be at or near the top.

Great discovery. I knew about Monks, but never listened to them before. Have now listened to Black Monk Time too and I loved it. The dark atmosphere, the savagery of the drums and the raging vocals: wonderful stuff.

I can listen to this kind of thing without getting tired of it. Nothing to say, it's good... but I'm missing a little something to get into the "very good" one 6.5/10
42. Car Seat Headrest – Not What I Needed
Ditto... but a little less 6/10

Just want to point out I voted for the version ending with a cover of "Just what I needed" which was a way better ending than the quickly rerecorded one that Will Toledo had to rush one week before the album release due to either a sudden change of mind of Ric Ocasek or the label lying about him giving his agreement.Rob wrote:42. Somehow the CD version I have have the original version, not the rerecorded one, making me assume they sent the CDs they could no longer legally sell in the US to Europe.

Re: Biggest Fan - February 2019
The overall song sounds more like the revised one in the final version of the album, but the final hooks close to the one in the video. Unfortunately the one I love most seems to have disappeared from the internet.Rob wrote:Do you have a link to this version somewhere? Sorry, but I'll have to make do with what I got for voting.
Car Seat Headrest - Not What I Needed: 6
I like Car Seat Headrest a lot and this is a solid song, but hardly a standout (in this form).

I had forgotten this song existed, despite receiving enough radio airplay back in the day I still listened to the radio. There is reason for that, because although it has it's catchy elements in place it still sounds bland and formulaic.

I never heard this song and... it sounds a little generic 4/10
44. John Mellencamp - What If I Came Knocking
Typically the kind of guy whose name I know but whom I've never heard before. The voice is beautiful, but the song leaves me indifferent. 4/10

John Mellencamp - What If I Came Knocking: 5
Mellencamp has always seemed like something of a missing link between Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi, but perhaps because Bon Jovi was the more popular act at the time of this song's release this skewers far more to Bon Jovi (though it could have been Bryan Adams track too). It's okay while it lasts, but very unoriginal and really a shallow take on the heartland genre.

Many of my favorite records of the 70s and later are exceedingly unoriginal.
My favorite record of 1972 is "Jambalaya" by the Blue Ridge Rangers.
My favorite records of 1977 and 1978 are totally unoriginal.
1977 - Ride On Josephine - George Thorogood & Destroyers
1978 - Who Do You Love - George Thorogood & Destroyers
My favorite sound is the R&B-rock and roll-blues-rockabilly-doo wop sound of 1951-1958. When someone in later years faithfully emulates that sound, why wouldn't I prefer it to something that is more original?

To me (and I’m sure to many others on the forum) innovation and originality are virtues in and of themselves. No piece of art can exist without context, be it a book or a painting or a movie or a song, and I really appreciate it when a work of art tries to push things forward, to expand the boundaries of what can be done within an artistic medium. That’s why there’s so much more to a song than what comes out of the speakers. There’s an entire history of a genre behind it.Hymie wrote:I fail to see why this is seen as a bad thing. So, if I understand you, I could play you an item and tell you that it's from 1970, and you might rate it a 9. And if I then tell you that it's actually from 2005, you would switch your rating to a 6 because it's not innovative?Nick wrote:To me (and I’m sure to many others on the forum) innovation and originality are virtues in and of themselves. There's something wrong with that if you ask me. The record should be rated on what's coming out of the speakers.
Re: Biggest Fan - February 2019
I wouldn’t go that drastically, but yes, learning that a song I had thought was original was, in actuality, very much unoriginal would damper my enjoyment of it.Hymie wrote:So, if I understand you, I could play you an item and tell you that it's from 1970, and you might rate it a 9. To me, not caring about originality is being content with artistic stagnation. To think of an entire society throwing their hands up in the air and proclaiming that they’ve reached the be all, end all of music, of literature, of architecture, of film, of fine art, and that no further progress need be made thank you very much is a thought that, frankly, disturbs me, and it’s not the sort of society I’d wish to live in.
But to each their own, and such and such.

Re: Biggest Fan - February 2019
Hymie, do you think a cover of a song that sounds exactly like the original is equally good?
Everyone you meet fights a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.
Re: Biggest Fan - February 2019
When you say "cover" I guess you mean the way that the word is commonly used, which is not the actual meaning. In reality it is only a "cover" when the second version is released within weeks of the first version in an attempt to steal away some of the popularity, like "Tutti-Frutti" by Pat Boone. When an act like the Clash does a version of a song from the 50s like "Brand New Cadillac" it is NOT a cover, but rather a remake.Henrik wrote:Hymie, do you think a cover of a song that sounds exactly like the original is equally good?
But to answer your question, OF COURSE I DO although I have never heard an instance where both versions sound exactly the same. But for example, I like "Gloria" by the Shadows of Knight better than Them's original version. I like "Midnight Confessions" better by the Grass Roots than the original version by Evergreen Blues. I like the Jacks cover of "Why Don't You Write Me" better than the Feathers original.
How and why and when and who was involved with the recording has no relevance at all to me towards which version I prefer. The story may be of interest, but when it comes to rating each version ALL THAT MATTERS IS WHAT'S COMING OUT OF THE SPEAKERS.
Re: Biggest Fan - February 2019
I care about it as far as the information, but it has not bearing on my enjoyment of each version.Nick wrote:

I also don't but the theory that music gets better as time moves on. It definitely changes, but to me there is no correlation between time moving on and whether or not music gets better.
As far as artistic stagnation, I've already said that my favorite music was made from 1951-1958 and that my favorite later music is mainly things that are emulating that 1950s sound, so I am very content with artistic stagnation.

Re: Biggest Fan - February 2019
If I listen to a song I really like and it has a familiar sound, then that's really good.
If I listen to a song I really like and it doesn't sound like anything I have heard before, then that's AWESOME because my appreciation of music has expanded again.
But I appreciate songs for what they are. In the way they were recorded, not as I heard them. So if the first song was released before the songs with a familiar sound I already knew, then I would find that song AWESOME as well. So yes, release year matters to me.

I'll react to the above later today. For now:
The next song ranks at #4093 at Acclaimed Music. It also has a lot of streams on Spotify.
45. Tyler, The Creator, featuring Frank Ocean & Steve Lacy – 911/Mr. Lonely
Year: 2017
Album: Flower Boy
Biggest Fan: Setherex (#204)
Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!
