April 1980: Elvis Costello walks out onto the stage at the Paradiso, alone, unplugged. Sings New Amsterdam. It is a naff idea really; the song has nothing to do with Amsterdam, but while Elvis is no songbird, he can hold a tune, and he cares about his songs and his audience, so it's all good.

December 1980: Talking Heads at the Hammersmith Odeon. I am familiar with the support band. I bought their recent debut album based upon airplay of their debut single. The A side is great, haven't listened to be B side much. It is a bit derivative and of course most of the audience haven't heard it. WTF, the lead singer thinks he's Mick Jagger playing Madison Square Garden. Don't think I want to see them again (and I haven't even though they became quite well known). Then this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e21AMoG4jt4, followed by a great mix of tracks from the last 2 albums. BTW David Byrne's Utopia tour was awesome.

Awesome list! Unfortunately, these aren't from 1980 according to the sources I have checked.

"Mankind" and "Her Story" are from 1979, "The Prisoner" is from 1978, and "You Can't Be Funky" is from 1981. I'll remove these and adjust everything up accordingly.

You can bump up 285-300 up one and add Soft Boys - Insanely Jealous to 300. The rest were unranked extras.

Spotify does, but it seems like other sources have it as a later compilation. Bump the others up and add The Psychedelic Furs - Dto as 15, please

Moonbeam:
My #66 song entry is from 1979 apparently.

Could you please remove that, add this:
9 | Steely Dan | Hey Nineteen
(I can't believe I forgot that song)
AND
66 | ABBA | Lay All Your Love on Me

and then move everything from my original #9 (REO Speedwagon) down one slot? This will push Missing Persons into HONORABLE MENTION.

I won't do any further editing unless I make a discovery on someone else's list or there are any other ineligibilities/omissions.

Thanks!

The Oak Ridge Boys were still a Southern Gospel act until 1977 so the 1973 date seems suspect. The album it was part of (TOGETHER) is 1980 according to Discogs:
https://www.discogs.com/The-Oak-Ridge-B ... ter/568965

AND Rate Your Music:
https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album ... /together/

I think Discogs has a bad date on the Master Release for the single. There are four issues showing with the same MCA catalogue number MCA 41217, 3 U.S. and 1 Canada but only one of them claims the 1973 date.

According to Wikipedia, the band didn't join that label until 1977:
"In 1977 the Oak Ridge Boys fully switched from gospel to country with the release of their first ABC Records (later absorbed by MCA) album, Y'all Come Back Saloon."

I think the song should be considered 1980.

Moonbeam, how on earth do you find the time to check release years for every song listened by anyone?

Mostly, it's a bit of spreadsheet magic! I generally have to check less than 10 songs per list myself.

Oh yes! I'll share the Google Sheet into which I'm entering the results, so you can see the full 1000+ list.

I'll probably post the top 300 or so as a post, too.

I see this as being from 1981 according to discogs and RYM.
27 | U2 | Out Of Control
27 | Tom Waits | Jersey Girl
Do you want "Out of Control" one place higher than "Jersey Girl", or is this a tie?

Should be one place higher. (Last minute addition). So bump Jersey Girl and everything below down one spot.

Thanks!

It was listed as 1980 on RYM, but I'll go back and edit.

**Fixed**
Thanks! It can be a bit tricky working out release dates. As a general rule, I'll go with AM first, and then check discogs and RYM.
This one is an example of where what is considered the “primary release” on RYM is later than the earliest release. So on the artist page and main album page it shows 1980, but if you click into issues, you will see on RYM that there were a few issues released as 1979.

I second this! (My list is heavy on pop from my youth. Would love to listen to some great lesser known/more experimental albums like you provided in the 90's poll.)

Also, welcome back, babydoll!
