I've spent the last six years campaigning for Nic Jones' album Penguin Eggs, and I don't intend to stop now!

You can count on my vote for Penguin Eggs - it will likely be in my top 3, maybe #1.

Other off-the-beaten-track albums I expect to be voting for:
- Vainica Doble | El eslabón perdido
- Bobb Trimble | Iron Curtain Innocence
- The John Renbourn Group | The Enchanted Garden

I think "Israel" is the best Siouxsie and the Banshees song. It's not on a proper album, but it's still a keeper!

As far as albums go, the debut album by italo disco act Kano is one of the very best the genre has to offer. It includes club classics "I'm Ready" and "It's a War", but the whole thing is incredible.

Another that might interest some voters: Steve Reich: Octet / Music for a Large Ensemble / Violin Phase.

1980 had a great song released in New Zealand: Tears, by The Crocodiles. I have no idea how well it would go over for new listeners but it was a pretty big hit here back in the day.

Hazel O'Connor

Hazel O'Connor being completely absent from AM is puzzling for me. And I haven't seen her on any forumer's lists either.

I thought she was fairly well known, and that her music would be quite critically acclaimed - but obviously not. Maybe she is only known in the UK.

Anyway, I think she's fab, and 1980 was her year. She released two albums in 1980, including the Breaking Glass soundtrack (the film in which she starred), for which she wrote and performed every song. It was produced by Tony Visconti.

Her stand-out tracks (all from 1980) are:
- Eighth Day
- Will You
- D-Days
- Writing On The Wall
- Give Me An Inch

I'd be interested to know whether people don't know her, or whether they just don't particularly like her songs.
But I was caught, like a fleeting thought,
Stuck inside Leonard Cohen's mind

I know its appeared on a few lists and places on the AM main site but i would really recommend that everyone who doesn't know it gives Underwater Moonlight by the Soft Boys a listen. It's pretty underrated given how much it did to shape the sound of alternative/college music in the rest of the 80s/ early 90s.

I heard this for the first time recently, and I've been listening to it a lot since! It's great!

My taste is completely different from the critics in 1980. Three albums in my top 4 are unacclaimed: ABBA, The Alan Parsons Project and Randy Crawford - not exactly obscure but nowhere in the album lists. Rock magazines were so much focused on post-punk and new wave that they overlooked a lot of good music in other genres.

For non-English music in the eighties I would recommend France Gall (Il jouait du piano debout, Ella elle l'a) and Paolo Conte (Via con Me, Come Di).

My recommandation is surprisingly already in relative good position to make it to the final round thanks to a couple high votes (before mine arrives).
It's from the Laurie who loved science and experimented with computers ! No, not that one, the other one.
I really love the opening track, Patchwork, with its overlapping synths which I would compare, for lack of better comparison, to a voiceless space Kraftwerk teaming with Steve Reich.
The next tracks are much more ambient and might appeal to fewer people but are really worth it if you love the genre.

Fun tidbit : Laurie Spiegel might be the first artist alien civilizations will hear ! The opening track from "the Sounds of Earth" on the golden record placed aboard the Voyager spacecraft opens with her adaptation of Johannes Kepler's work on harmonies and dissonances.

I've been meaning to explore France Gall. Although "Il jouait du piano debout" appears to be from 1980, I see "Ella elle l'a" listed as a 1987 song. Do you have some source that says it was released in 1980? I know you said "in the eighties" but I just wanted to double check.

And yes, I agree on the misalignment with critics. Of my top 10 albums from 1980, only 3 are ranked, and 3 more are bubblers, leaving 4 completely unacclaimed.

Agreed - this is a great song and also kicked off Henny Morris's career.

It turns out i am the only one to have voted for Blue Boy by Orange Juice - I definitely reccommend giving it a listen if you like jangly/indie 80s music.
