10. Sigur Rós - Ágætis byrjun
Score: 1582.7 pts
Year of Release: 1999 (#1 in year poll)
AM 1990s albums rank: 43 (224 all-time)
AMF 2017 All-time poll 1990s rank: 17
AMF 2012 1990s poll rank: 10

Fans: BangJan(6), bonnielaurel(14), ChrisK(8), CupOfDreams(8), DaveC(9), Listyguy(15), rumpdoll(12)
Lowest rank: RockyRaccoon(85)

RockyRaccoon: I like my music to have some structure, so if it's built more on atmosphere, then it has to be pretty damn good and hold my attention as something more than just background music. This album does that about half the time. 7/10.

9. Nirvana - In Utero
Score: 1585.7 pts
Year of Release: 1993 (#2 in year poll)
AM 1990s albums rank: 15 (102 all-time)
AMF 2017 All-time poll 1990s rank: 10
AMF 2012 1990s poll rank: 14

Fans: carlos74(6), Craig(6), FrankLotion(8), Jirin(4), Listyguy(1), maverick470(7), RockyRaccoon(6)
Lowest rank: JamieW(107)

RockyRaccoon: "Teenage angst has paid off well / Now I'm bored and old." What a perfect way to start the followup to Nevermind. Distancing themselves somewhat from that success, they went with a harsher sound, but even that couldn't obscure Cobain's brilliant songwriting with the everpresent strain of pop melody running through it. And in the end we have the quieter classics like "Dumb" and "All Aplogies" to balance things out. Why or why? 10/10.

8. U2 - Achtung Baby
Score: 1594.7 pts
Year of Release: 1991 (#5 in year poll)
AM 1990s albums rank: 12 (80 all-time)
AMF 2017 All-time poll 1990s rank: 15
AMF 2012 1990s poll rank: 17

Fans: Akhenaten(5), carlos74(13), ChrisK(5), Craig(2), Henry(12), KingofTonga(10), Listyguy(12), LiveinPhoenix(4), maverick470(5), RockyRaccoon(5)
Not Fans: rumpdoll(137)

RockyRaccoon: As a huge U2 fan, I was waiting for the Joshue Tree 2 when this came out. Thankfully, that's not what I got. Reinventing themselves with a more euro-industrial sound, U2 recorded another masterpiece. It was still definitely recognizable as them, Bono's voice and the Edge's guitar the hallmarks of their identity, but it also sounded like nothing else they'd done before. That's the sign of a great band, the ability to evolve, and evolve they did, with one brilliant track after another. 10/10.

7. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Score: 1635.4 pts
Year of Release: 1991 (#2 in year poll)
AM 1990s albums rank: 7 (58 all-time)
AMF 2017 All-time poll 1990s rank: 7
AMF 2012 1990s poll rank: 6

Fans: BangJan(4), BleuPanda(15), Brad(2), carlos74(3), CupOfDreams(2), phil(6), rumpdoll(8), sonofsamiam(6), spiritualized(7)
Not Fans: Craig(122/122), Nassim(141)

Nassim: Even when I don't enjoy them, I usually get what's the appeal of the most acclaimed albums, but with Loveless is never clicked. That's kind of a frustration as it's an album loved by a lot of people I share lots of musical tastes with, but it just doesn't work, and relistening to it just helped it move from 5th to last to 10th to last.

RockyRaccoon: It's a swirling mass of sound, something that's not ordinarily my sort of thing, but when it's so expertly crafted that the melodies are still distinguishable, who am I to argue? I love the soaring guitars and how they're pushed to the forefront in these songs. In that way it reminds me of Psychocandy. That's paying it a compliment. 8/10.

The dominance of Radiohead for the folks in this 1990's album poll is increasingly revealed as we move to the top 6 - even compared to Nirvana.

Slightly edgy opinion: MBV is like a cheap copy of Loveless.

More edgy opinion: MBV is better than Loveless. :)

Right now I've got m b v as my #64 of all time and Loveless as only #370.

Is that more or less heretical than placing Third (#193) higher than Dummy (#304)?

If placing m b v above Loveless is heresy, then placing Third above Dummy is apostasy.

RockyRaccoon: I think it's overrated but still really good. It's hard to argue with the sonic marvels of "High and Dry," "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Just." 8/10.

5. Pearl Jam - Ten

Lowest rank: rumpdoll(123)

RockyRaccoon: This was the soundtrack to my 1992 European vacation, I practically wore out the tape listening to it on my walkman during long train rides. Partly it was the sound of home, but mostly it was just kick-ass songs with Vedder's distinct rock vocal performance. 8/10.

Fans: Akhenaten(6), BleuPanda(11), DaveC(3), Gillingham(7), KingofTonga(13), Nassim(4), rumpdoll(6)
Lowest rank: ChrisK(74)

RockyRaccoon: The soundtrack for an as-yet-released young, noir, James Bonds movie/film. 8/10.

....and a large points gap before the top 3

I just don’t even like My Bloody Valentine very much.

3. R.E.M. - Automatic for the People
Score: 1961.7 pts
Year of Release: 1992 (#1 in year poll)
AM 1990s albums rank: 4 (42 all-time)
AMF 2017 All-time poll 1990s rank: 5
AMF 2012 1990s poll rank: 2

Fans: BleuPanda(1), Brad(8), carlos74(2), ChrisK(2), Craig(5), CupOfDreams(15), DaveC(7), FrankLotion(6), Henry(14), KingofTonga(3), Listyguy(3), maverick470(9), nicolas(9), RockyRaccoon(4), spiritualized(2)
Lowest rank: rumpdoll(96)

RockyRaccoon: Starting with the somber yet somehow catchy "Drive" and going through turns of lively pop "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight" "Man in the Moon," protest rock "Ignoreland" and elegant balladry "Everybody Hurts," R.E.M.'s most life-affirming album is also their most beautiful. 10/10.

[imgsize 400x400]https://www.thornburyrecords.com/783-la ... ermind.jpg[/imgsize]

2. Nirvana - Nevermind
Score: 2003.8 pts
Year of Release: 1991 (#1 in year poll)
AM 1990s albums rank: 1 (3 all-time)
AMF 2017 All-time poll 1990s rank: 2
AMF 2012 1990s poll rank: 3

Fans: andyd1010(5), BleuPanda(2), bonnielaurel(6), Bruno(4), ChrisK(4), Craig(3), FrankLotion(3), Henry(11), Listyguy(7), LiveinPhoenix(1), maverick470(1), nicolas(11), RockyRaccoon(1), spiritualized(11)
Lowest rank: BangJan(82)

RockyRaccoon: Radio, and even MTV, used to be important last century. When "Smells Like Teen Spirit" broke through the alternative barrier on both of those mediums, it was an exciting time to be alive and experience music. It was especially exciting for me, a young college student living in the Seattle area. Seeing some of the biggest names in the Seattle music scene just around town was cool: Running into Eddie Veder in Magnolia while working for an environmental group, working at the video store Ben Shepard often rented from, and sharing a flight from Sea-Tac to Heathrow with Nirvana. I even saw Spoonman on the Seattle-Bainbridge ferry a couple of times. Anyway, just like other tidal changes in the music world, what came afterward wouldn't have been the same without it. 10/10.

[imgsize 400x400]http://cdn.albumoftheyear.org/album/ok-computer.jpg[/imgsize]

1. Radiohead - OK Computer
Score: 2227.7 pts
Year of Release: 1997 (#1 in year poll)
AM 1990s albums rank: 2 (8 all-time)
AMF 2017 All-time poll 1990s rank: 1
AMF 2012 1990s poll rank: 1

Fans: andyd1010(1), BleuPanda(4), bonnielaurel(9), Brad(4), Bruno(6), carlos74(1), ChrisK(1), Craig(1), CupOfDreams(13), DaveC(1), FrankLotion(1), Gillingham(4), JamieW(3), Listyguy(6), maverick470(4), Nassim(8), phil(5), RockyRaccoon(3), sonofsamiam(4)
Lowest rank: KingofTonga(71/133)

LiveinPhoenix: It's very good unto itself, although Radiohead has taken their sonics (and I'd say even their vulnerability) farther ever since, to the point this seems a little dated instead of the ultimate album or ultimate Radiohead album. (My pick for the latter would be Kid A.)

RockyRaccoon: The poll winner is No. 3 on my ballot. Not much I can add to what has already been said about this album. It is great. 10/10.

OK Computer has been in my all time top 5 but lately fallen a bit. Not sure what it is, maybe some of its eccentrities are starting to feel gaudy or “Weird for weird’s sake”. Still a great album though and worthy #1.
