Yeah, love this (almost) instrumental ditty, B-side of the Stones second single. It has the atmosphere of a dark and smoky blues club and nice harmonica and piano parts (from Brian Jones and Ian Stewart). Almost makes you feel actually "stoned."

I managed a top 30:

1. Sympathy for the Devil
2. Angie
3. You Can’t Get What You Want
4. Brown Sugar
5. Gimme Shelter
6. Slave
7. (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
8. Paint It Black
9. Street Fighting Man
10. As Tears Go By
11. 18th Nervous Breakdown
12. Miss You
13. Jumpin’ Jack Flash
14. Let’s Spend the Night Together
15. Rocks Off
16. Ruby Tuesday
17. Get Off Of My Cloud
18. Tumbling Dice
19. Start Me Up
20. Undercover of the Night
21. Sister Morphine
22. Memory Motel
23. The Last Time
24. Emotional Rescue
25. Fool to Cry
26. Under My Thumb
27. Waiting On a Friend
28. She’s a Rainbow
29. Wild Horses
30. Going Home

The Rolling Stones take a weird spot in my music listening. They have always been around and almost always they had at least one song in rotation, but there has never been a specific moment that I listened to them a lot. There is also no single band that I'm more familiar with through compilations (and frequent radio play - many of the above still appear, among others, on Dutch radio) instead of albums. I took the time this week to listen to several albums of them and it's a pleasure to take the deep dive in this band, finally.

I have to say, I miss these month-long artist polls we did a while back. We only did a few, but they allowed for real deep dives. In a short time like with polls of these it is hard to let things sink in and it is more for people who have already taken the plunge. Nothing wrong with that, but since discovery is the main point for me with polls I do prefer other formats.

Sorry to the guys with the late lists, but it was a lot of work to tally everything up and get the stats on the songs, along with some regular life problems (my hot water heater went today), so I don't have time to go back and add the late lists into the results.

Okay guys, the ballots are in and they have been tabulated. We got a great response to this one, with 57 ballots, not counting a few more that were submitted too late. There were 224 different songs mentioned in the poll, with 175 of them getting the required 2 or more listings that were needed to be part of the official results. I am going to count down every song that accumulated 125 or more points in the voting. There are 111 of them.

In case anybody does not know the legendary story of how the Rolling Stones came about:

It was in October 1961, at Dartford railway station on the outskirts of London, when Mick Jagger met Keith Richards for the very first time. They were both 18 and on their way to their places of higher education. Jagger was at the prestigious London School of Economics while Richards would be attending the Sidcup Art College.

They were both born in the same hospital in the same year, 1943, and they lived only a street apart until the Richards’ family moved when Keith was 11. Like many British teenagers Keith was only going to the state-subsidided art school while he improved his skills on guitar. He was surprised to see that his childhood playmate was clutching long playing albums by Chuck Berry, Little Walter and Muddy Waters.

As they got into conversation, Jagger not only confirmed that he shared Richards’ passion for rhythm and blues but revealed he sang with an amateur RnB group called Little Boy Blue and The Blues Boys – which Richards promptly joined. They couldn’t have known at the time that joining up would ultimately allow them to form the song-writing axis of one of the most celebrated and successful rock ensembles of all time, The Rolling Stones.

The following year Brian Jones, with a passion for jazz and blues, was trying to form a band of his own and recruited Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Shortly after Bill Wyman was drafted in, reportedly because he had his own amplifier. Jazz aficionado Charlie Watts was recruited from the blues band Alexis Korner and by late 1962 The Rolling Stones line-up was complete.

Of course the Muddy Waters song "Rolling Stone" from 1950 was where the band got their name.

And in a nice coincidence, the first song on our countdown is the Stones' version of one of Muddy's classic hits. The band started by doing versions of blues, rock and roll, and R&B standards, mainly from the 1950s, so it's a nice way to start the countdown.

Here is song # 111, from 1964:

I'm a bit confused. The story tells that the met for the very first time in 1961, but also that they were childhood playmates?

On another note: That's a damn good opener for the top 111. Looking forward to the rest of the lot.

I think that they had no memory of each other as kids.

Song #111 in the countdown was "I Just want To Make Love To You" from 1964. It was included on the band's first album "The Rolling Stones" in the UK and "England's Newest Hit Makers" in the USA. It also was on the flip side of "Tell Me" on the American single.

Like most British versions of blues, the Stones sped the tempo of the song way up. Here's Muddy's original version, from 1954:

At #110 was "Little T & A" from the "Tattoo You" album in 1981. It also was the flip side of "Waiting On A Friend" on a single. The song is sung by guitarist Keith Richards.

Credited to usual Stones scribes Mick Jagger and Richards, "Little T & A" was largely a Richards composition. He originally began writing the song in the early months of 1979 with the intention of having the song featured on 1980s Emotional Rescue. Left off that album it re-emerged for Tattoo You two years later. The band began reworking the track in mid-1981.

The song is a straightforward rocker, although Richards claims to have been influenced by rockabilly in his guitar performance. The song opens with a trademark riff from Richards, who plays bass and electric guitar along with Ronnie Wood. Ian Stewart performs on piano for the song and Jagger provides backing vocals along with Richards and Wood. Charlie Watts plays drums.

The lyrics of "Little T&A" were described by Richards at the time as being about, "...every good time I've had with somebody I'd met for a night or two and never seen again. And also about the shit that sometimes goes down when you just sort of bump into people unknowingly, and not knowing the scene you're walking in on, you know? You pick up a chick and end up spending the night in the tank, you know?" The lyrics see Richards bemoan that lifestyle:

“ The heat's raiding, the tracks is fading/Joint's rocking, could be anytime at all/But the bitch keep bitching, the snitcher keeps snitching/Dropping names and telephone numbers and all, well. ”

"Little T&A" was performed throughout the American Tour 1981, and was included on the concert film Let's Spend the Night Together. Richards reinstated the sing to the band's setlist during the 2006 leg of the Stones' A Bigger Bang Tour, when it was played frequently. A live performance captured for the documentary Shine a Light was included on the soundtrack of the same name. As evident on many bootleg recordings, the song was played frequently on Richards's 1988 and 1992 tours with the X-Pensive Winos in support of Talk Is Cheap and Main Offender records.

The song played on the soundtrack of the 2012 movie Argo which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2013. The inclusion of the track was anachronistic in that the movie was set in 1979-1980, which predates the recording of this track.

Song #107 was "I Don't Know Why" from the "Metamorphosis" album in 1975. The son was written and originally done by Stevie Wonder. It was the flip side of "My Cherie Amour" and was a hit in its own right. The Stones recorded this in 1969, when the Stevie Wonder record was a current hit, but it did not get released until 1975. Here is Stevie's version:

Song #106 was "Country Honk" from the "Let It Bleed" album in 1969. God only knows why they decided not to put "Honky Tonk Women" on the album and to instead include this. Supposedly this was how the song was originally conceived. Nanette Workman sings background vocals on the track, and Byron Berline played the fiddle.

Song #105 was "Yesterday's Papers" from the "Between The Buttons" album in 1967. This is the first song that Mick wrote for the band all by himself. In the song, recorded in late 1966, Brian Jones's vibraphone and Jack Nitzsche's harpsichord are prominent: Keith Richards plays a distorted guitar with Charlie Watts on drums and Bill Wyman on bass. The song is supposedly directed at Jagger's ex-girlfriend Chrissie Shrimpton, whose relationship with Jagger at the time turned sour. It is noted for suggesting a negative treatment of women, comparing "yesterday's girl" to "yesterday's papers", as something that can be just thrown out. This is exacerbated by the fact that Shrimpton tried to commit suicide over the breakup. Below is a picture of Chrissie Shrimpton from that time:

Song #104 was "Come On," a Chuck Berry song that became the band's first chart hit. It reached #21 on the UK charts in a 14 week run that started in July 1963. Here's Chuck's version from 1961. Notice that Chuck says "some stupid jerk" and the Stones say "some stupid guy." They had to change the word jerk, other wise the strict BBC censors might have banned the record for promoting masturbation or something.

During the 6 June 2013 concert in Toronto, Canada, as part of the "50 & Counting Tour", Mick Jagger sang a few bars (with Charlie Watts drumming the beat) after mentioning the single being released exactly 50 years ago that day. It was the first time the song was heard in any capacity during a Rolling Stones concert since 1965.

Song #102 was "Heaven" from the "Tattoo You" album in 1981. Along with "Neighbors," this was one of two songs on Tattoo You recorded specifically for the album. The other tracks started as outtakes for other albums. Tattoo You was the last time The Rolling Stones scored a #1 on the US albums chart, after a full decade of albums that reached the summit.

Keith Richards doesn't play on this track; their bass player Bill Wyman played guitar and also synthesizer and bass. Mick Jagger also played guitar on the track, and the only other performer was Charlie Watts on drums. The vocals here peg this song as one of the most psychedelic the Stones ever did. The group had been gradually edging from pure blues to hard rock to psychedelic styles throughout the previous decade. Mick Jagger got quite creative with overdubbing and mixing on parts of the Tattoo You album.

The very concept of Heaven, an afterlife for humans presumed virtuous and pleasurable, seems built into the human psyche. It is a component of just about every major religion ever to take root in human history. However, this song seems to be talking only about sexual ecstasy.

Song #100 was "You Better Move On" from 1964. It was included on the "December's Children" album in 1965. It was first released in January 1964 on this British EP:

The song was done originally by Arthur Alexander in 1961. The lyrics were inspired by Alexander's real life situation, in which his girlfriend and future wife already had a boyfriend. Alexander said of the situation "When I met her out of high school he was still hanging in there. His family was pretty well off. I didn't have no money but I knew she liked me. It was a small town and people would be talking. That's where I got the idea for the song. I didn't talk to him personally. I said it in song."

I don't get it either. I like maybe 3 other songs on the album besides "Tumbling Dice" but I don't see why it's so highly regarded. My favorite album by them to listen to as a full album is "Some Girls."

Song #98 is "Citadel" from the "Their Satanic Majesties Request" album in 1967. The chorus of the song refers to actress Candy Darling and her friend Taffy, who the Rolling Stones had previously met at the Hotel Albert in New York City. According to Darling:

We met them in the Hotel Albert. We were on the floor above them and we dangled a bunch of grapes down on a string outside their window. You see, the Citadel is New York and the song is a message to us – Taffy and me.

This album was the band's venture into psychedelic music. I never liked it myself, but lots of people do.

Song #97 is "Prodigal Son" from the "Beggars Banquet" album in 1968. The original song was written by Rev. Robert Wilkins although it is listed as a Mick Jagger/ Keith Richards song on the album. The 72 year old Rev. Wilkins recorded it in 1964 on his Reverend Robert Wilkins Memphis Gospel Singer album. The confusion was eventually straightened out and Wilkins got the money that was due him for writing the song. The original song as written by Wilkins was titled “That’s No Way To Get Along” back in the written back in the 1930’s before Wilkins gave up being a blues musician to join the church after witnessing a murder. It wasn’t by the way The Rolling Stones trying to screw someone over- a record company mistake. This was the first time since 1965 that The Rolling Stones had recorded a song written by someone else. Here's the Rev. Wilkins version:

Song #96 on the countdown is "Hang Fire" from 1981. The single got to #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982. This song is a swipe at The Stones' home country of England. They imply that the people are lazy and the politicians incompetent. The Stones rarely performed in England because of the huge taxes that were levied on entertainers; it was much more profitable for them to live and work elsewhere.

A "hang fire" is a delay from when a trigger is pulled and the gun actually fires. The metaphor could apply to the lazy people who won't take action. It's also a great phrase to sing, which Mick Jagger does a few different ways throughout the song, sometimes stretching out "fire," and other times keeping it contained.

The Stones first recorded the track in 1978 at the Some Girls sessions. Lyrics were added and it was repackaged for Tattoo You. The original title was "Lazy Bitch," probably referring to British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.
