Song #95 is "Love Is Strong" from the "Voodoo Lounge" album in 1994. This was the first Stones single bass player Bill Wyman did not play on. Darryl Jones, who had played with Miles Davis and Sting, took over on bass when Wyman retired. R&B producer Teddy Riley cut four mixes of this song for a CD sampler.

This was the first single from Voodoo Lounge. The album won the first ever Grammy for Best Rock Album. It was the first album The Stones recorded without Bill Wyman, a founding member of the band. It was also the Stones' first release on Virgin Records.

Song #94 is "Confessin' The Blues" from 1964. It was included on the "12 X 5" album, which did not come out in the UK, but was released in Canada and the USA, and a few other places. It was first released in the UK on the EP shown below:

This song was a big hit in the black community in 1941, by Jay McShann, with Walter Brown on the vocal:

It's doubtful that the Stones were even aware of the McShann record when they recorded their version. They were channeling the 1958 version by Little Walter:

We had a triple play of 3 consecutive songs from the "Exile On Main Street" album in 1872. #93 was "Stop Breaking Down." Then #92 was "All Down The Line," and finally #91 was "Sweet Black Angel." "All Down The Line" was on the flip side of "Happy" as a single, and "Sweet Black Angel" was the flip side of "Tumbling Dice."

"Stop Breaking Down" or "Stop Breakin' Down Blues" is a Delta blues song recorded by Robert Johnson in 1937. Described as an "upbeat boogie with a strong chorus line", the song became popular largely through later interpretations by other artists. The Rolling Stones recorded "Stop Breaking Down" for their 1972 Exile on Main St. album. They interpreted the song somewhat differently from the earlier versions, with prominent slide guitar work by Mick Taylor and Mick Jagger providing the harmonica and guitar.

Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "All Down the Line" is a straight-ahead electric rock song which opens side four of Exile on Main St.. Featured on the recording are Jagger on lead vocals and backing vocals with Richards and Kathi McDonald. Bill Wyman performs electric bass while Bill Plummer performs acoustic standup bass. Mick Taylor performs the electric slide guitar while Richards performs electric rhythm guitar. With Charlie Watts on drums, producer Jimmy Miller performs maracas. Bobby Keys and Jim Price lend support on saxophone, and trumpet and trombone, respectively. Nicky Hopkins performs on piano.

The Rolling Stones famously gave a Los Angeles radio station a demo of "All Down the Line" to play while they drove around and listened to it on the radio, but "All Down the Line"'s biggest claim to fame may be its near constant appearance on the Rolling Stones' tours since the release of Exile on Main St..

Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, “Sweet Black Angel” is one of the few outright political songs written by the Rolling Stones. A country-blues ballad, it is about civil rights activist Angela Davis, who was facing murder charges at the time. Steve Kurutz writes in his review:

Having never heard of Angela Davis, a listener could easily overlook the political lyrics and get lost in the circular acoustic plucking or the washboard rhythm that propels the song so well. Yet, by knowing the case history one realizes how deft and clever Mick's lyrics could be, even if he hides behind his best backwoods diction and garbled annunciation [sic] obscure the point.

Davis is not mentioned by name in the lyrics:

Well de gal in danger, de gal in chains, but she keep on pushin', would you do the same?
She countin' up de minutes, she countin' up de days.
She's a sweet black angel, not a gun toting teacher, not a Red lovin' school marm;
Ain't someone gonna free her, free de sweet black slave, free de sweet black slave

Song #90 is "Winter" from the "Goats Head Soup" album in 1973. The song bears many similarities to "Moonlight Mile" from their 1971 album Sticky Fingers. Credited to singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards, "Winter" is actually the work of Jagger and the Stones' lead guitarist at the time, Mick Taylor. It was the first song recorded for the album and does not feature Richards.

About the song, Bill Janovitz says in his review, "Here they were in sunny Jamaica, and the Stones were writing and recording an entirely convincing and evocative picture of a Northern Hemisphere winter. Perhaps they were so happy to be escaping the season they felt that starting the sessions with "Winter" could transition them out of the old and into the new climate. Though it bemoans many of the negatives of the season [in the] lyrics ... [it] seems to simultaneously celebrate the season as something inherently beautiful, with other evocations of holiday scenes and wanting to wrap a coat and keep a lover warm."

“ It's sure been a hard, hard winter; My feet, they're draggin' 'cross the ground; And I hope it's gonna be a long, hot summer; And the light o' love will be burnin' bright ”
“ And I wish I'd been out in California, When the lights on all the Christmas trees went out; But I been burnin' my bell, book and candle, And the restoration plays have all gone 'round ”

Recording began at Kingston's Dynamic Sound Studios in November and continued into December 1972. Jagger opens the song with the rhythm guitar piece and is accompanied by Taylor's "country-like licks" on lead. Taylor also plays slide guitar. Nicky Hopkins performs the song's accompanying piano while Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts perform bass and drums, respectively. The strings were arranged by Nicky Harrison.

Despite his considerable contribution to the song, Taylor never received official credit from Jagger or Richards.

Song #89 was "Goin' Home" from the "Aftermath" album in 1966. On the American version of the album it was "Going Home." Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "Goin' Home" is a long blues-inspired track that is notable as one of the first songs by a rock and roll band to break the ten-minute mark and the longest recorded song on any Stones album. While many bands had experimented with length in live performances, and Bob Dylan had written many songs by this point which reached the five/six-minute mark, "Goin' Home" was the first "jam" recorded expressly for an album. In an interview with the magazine Rolling Stone, Richards said:

It was the first long rock and roll cut. It broke that two-minute barrier. We tried to make singles as long as we could do then because we just liked to let things roll on. Dylan was used to building a song for 20 minutes because of the folk thing he came from.

That was another thing. No one sat down to make an 11-minute track. I mean 'Goin' Home', the song was written just the first 2 and a half minutes. We just happened to keep the tape rolling, me on guitar, Brian [Jones] on harp, Bill [Wyman, on bass] and Charlie [Watts, on drums] and Mick. If there's a piano, it's Stew [Ian Stewart].

Jack Nitzsche, a regular Stones contributor throughout the 1960s, here performs percussion.

The song, while lengthy, is built around a common theme, as opposed to later Stones songs of great length like "Midnight Rambler" or "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" which are divided into distinct sections punctuated by differing instrumentations. "Goin' Home" plays as a long jam, eventually deconstructing Richards' guitar piece, Jagger's lyrics, and Watts' drum lines which build in power as the song progresses. Jagger's lyrics are called "a basic expression of [his] pining for his girl and determining to go home and get him some. It's the bumpety-bump, ascending chorus of announcing his intentions to go home that's the most 'pop' element of the song."

Song #88 is "Undercover of the Night" from the "Undercover" album in 1983. The song was largely a Mick Jagger composition, with guitarist Keith Richards going as far as saying, "Mick had this one all mapped out, I just played on it". Jagger later said that the song "was heavily influenced by William Burroughs’ ‘Cities of the Red Night,’ a free-wheeling novel about political and sexual repression. It combines a number of different references to what was going down in Argentina and Chile." The song was likely written in Paris in late 1982, where recording began on the album.

In 2003, guitarist Ronnie Wood described the fractious writing as "just me, Mick and Charlie [Watts]... [We] took it up into some wonderful adventures with all these different changes... There was a great percussive and acoustic version, which is the kind of song it should be. The final polished, glossed-up version may have been Mick's vision of the song..."

The lyrics see Jagger explore the then-ongoing political corruption in Central and South America:
“ All the young men, they've been rounded up;
And sent to camps back in the jungle;
And people whisper, people double-talk;
Once proud fathers act so humble. ”

"Undercover of the Night" is one of the few songs by the Rolling Stones which overtly explore political ideas. Recording began in early 1983 and was resumed later that summer at New York City's famed Hit Factory. There are two versions of this song, one featuring usual Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman and the other featuring guest Robbie Shakespeare. The song features Sly Dunbar, Martin Ditcham, Moustapha Cisse and Brahms Coundoul, on various instruments ranging from bongos to timpani. Organ on the piece is performed by Chuck Leavell, who later became the Rolling Stones' regular pianist.

Song #87 is "Doom And Gloom" from the "Grrrh" album in 2012. The song's opening riff is played by Jagger. Richards commented on Jagger being the driving force behind the song and Jagger playing the opening riff: "I don't give a damn. He'd never have learned how to play that without me teaching him how to do it."

Song #86 is "Ventilator Blues" from "Exile On Main Street" in 1972. “Ventilator Blues” marks the only time guitarist Mick Taylor was given credit alongside regular Stones scribes Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, even though the exact amount of Taylor’s input remains unknown. The song features Keith Richards on electric slide guitar, electric and acoustic guitar, Taylor on lead guitar during the outro, Mick Jagger on vocals, Bill Wyman on bass, Charlie Watts on drums, Nicky Hopkins on piano, and Bobby Keys and Jim Price on saxophone and trumpet respectively.

The song itself is a low and lumbering blues number, with Bill Janovitz saying in his review, “the instrumental arrangement clearly aims for the Chess Studios approach.” Jagger double tracks the lead vocal, a studio technique rarely used in Rolling Stones recordings. Janovitz concludes, “Jagger takes the Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf inspiration of the song's origins and does his best to betray the fact that he is a skinny middle-class English kid, convincingly delivering the time-bomb lyric with appropriate swagger.”

When your spine is cracking and your hands they shake;
Heart is bursting and your butt's going to break;
Woman’s cussing, you can hear her scream;
Feel like murder in the first degree
Ain’t nobody slowing down no way;
Everybody’s stepping on their accelerator;
Don’t matter where you are;
Everybody’s going to need a ventilator

On pianist Nicky Hopkins notable contribution, Janovitz says, “[Hopkins plays] a rhythmically complex piano part on the verses, weaving in and out of the swooping guitar lick on the first verse and then building as the arrangement continues, playing nervous, jittery right-handed upper-register trills. The pianist creates scary tension on an already claustrophobic and malevolent-sounding song.” The song is noted for its rising and falling chord progression, punctuated by the saxophone of Bobby Keys and the trumpet and trombone of Jim Price. Keeping beat is Charlie Watts on drums and Bill Wyman on bass who, although frequently absent during the recording sessions for Exile, made it on this occasion. The Rolling Stones have performed “Ventilator Blues” live only once, at Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, Canada, on opening night of the 1972 North American Tour in support of Exile on Main Street.

Song #85 is "Carol" from 1964. It was featured on the Stones first album "The Rolling Stones" in the UK and "Englands Newest Hit Makers" in the USA. The band usually did good versions of Chuck Berry songs. In fact the earliest known recording of the band, a practice session from 1962 has them doing "Johnnie B. Goode." This is from when they were known as Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys. They sound terrible then, as you can hear on this video:

But they must have kept practicing every day, because about 8 months later they sound much better on this reading of "Roll Over Beethoven."

Song #84 is "I'm A King Bee" from 1964. It was included on the band's first album. The song was done originally by Slim Harpo in 1957. The Stones arrangement generally follows Slim Harpo's, but includes a slide-guitar break by Brian Jones. The personnel consisted of Jagger on vocals and harmonica, Jones on slide guitar, Keith Richards on acoustic guitar, Bill Wyman on bass guitar, and Charlie Watts on drums. Later, Mick Jagger commented "What's the point in listening to us doing 'I'm a King Bee' when you can hear Slim Harpo do it?"

Song #83 is "Mixed Emotions" from the "Steel Wheels" album in 1989. "Mixed Emotions" was the last top 10 hit that the Stones had in America, peaking at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was a heavy collaborative effort between Jagger and Richards. Richards brought his own music to the sessions along with most of the song's lyrics, the rest being filled in by Jagger in the studio.

The song is an upfront rocker, with Richards, Jagger and Ronnie Wood sharing guitar duties. Piano and organ were provided by Chuck Leavell, the Stones' touring keyboardist since the 1980s. Backing vocals are provided by Jagger, Richards, Sarah Dash, Lisa Fischer, and Bernard Fowler, the latter two longtime touring vocalists for the Stones. Brass was provided by the Kick Horns while Luis Jardim provided percussion. Charlie Watts handled drums while Bill Wyman played bass.

Song #82 is "I Got The Blues" from the "Sticky Fingers" album in 1971. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "I Got the Blues" is a slow-paced, bluesy song in 6/8 time. It features languid guitars with heavy influence of both blues and soul feel. Recorded during the months of March through May 1970, the song features Mick Jagger on lead vocals, Keith Richards on harmony vocals, Mick Taylor and Richards on guitars, Bill Wyman on bass, Charlie Watts on drums, and Billy Preston on Hammond organ. Stones' recording veterans Bobby Keys and Jim Price performed on the saxophone and trumpet, respectively.

Song #81 is "The Spider And The Fly" from the US version of the "Out of Our Heads" album in 1965. In the UK is was the flip side of the "Satisfaction" single. The song was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. The lyrics speak about what the band, especially the leader, will do after their gig is over:

Sittin' thinkin' sinkin' drinkin'
Wondering what I'll do when I'm through tonight

Smokin', mopin', maybe just hopin'
Some little girl will pass on by

Jagger explained in a 1995 interview with Rolling Stone, "I wasn't really that mad about it, but when you listen to it on record, it still holds up quite interestingly as a blues song. It's a Jimmy Reed blues with British pop-group words, which is an interesting combination: a song somewhat stuck in a time warp." It features early use of the Rolling Stones' "ancient form of weaving" by guitarists Richards and Brian Jones. Jagger performs harmonica on the recording while Jack Nitzsche provides percussion and keyboards.

Song #80 is "Parachute Woman" from the "Beggars Banquet" album in 1968. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "Parachute Woman" is a blues song and is one of the famous Beggars Banquet songs recorded on a cassette player and double-tracked for effect. Bill Janovitz comments in his review of the song:

The result is a raw and murky but atmosphere-filled blues track that spotlights Mick Jagger's mumbled sexual boasts and intense harmonica playing. With barely veiled innuendo – just enough to make it comical – Jagger makes like a modern-day Muddy Waters: "Parachute woman will you blow me out?/My heavy throbber's itching just to lay a solid rhythm down."

Mick Jagger is on lead vocals and Keith Richards is on electric lead guitar, and Brian Jones plays acoustic rhythm guitar. It is disputed whether the harmonica is played by Jagger and/or Brian Jones. Some sources give it as either Jones or Jagger but some have stated that it may have been by the both of them on separate harmonicas. Charlie Watts provides drums and Bill Wyman plays the bass.

"Parachute Woman" was only ever performed live by the Rolling Stones two times. The first performance was during the 1968 Rock and Roll Circus and appears on the subsequent album. It would also be performed once during the 2002 Licks Tour, more than 30 years after its initial live debut.

Song #79 is "Rip This Joint" from "Exile On Main Street" in 1972. Jagger's breakneck delivery of the song's lines spells out a rambling tale set across America from the perspective of a foreigner. Richards notes the tempo of the song: "It's one of the fastest ones of the lot and it really keeps you on your toes".

In his review of the song, Bill Janovitz comments:

The result is a frenetic pace that approaches the tempos played by hardcore punk bands roughly ten years later, certainly recognizing the raw excitement of early roots rock & roll years before ... Though the band most likely did not sit down and preconceive it as such, the record seems to set out to cover nothing less than the wide-open spaces of America itself via the nation's music – from urban soul to down-home country to New Orleans jazz. 'Rip This Joint' sets the tone for this journey, as a modern-day "Route 66" travelogue from Birmingham to San Diego.

Recording began in late 1971 at Richards' rented home in France, Villa Nellcôte, using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. With Jagger on lead vocals, Richards sings back-up and plays all electric guitars, and Charlie Watts plays drums. Bill Plummer provides upright bass for the recording while Nicky Hopkins performs Johnnie Johnson-like piano. Bobby Keys plays two saxophone solos, Jim Price performs trumpet and trombone.

Song #78 is "Far Away Eyes" from the "Some Girls" album in 1978. It was issued on a single as the flip side of "Miss You." Mick Jagger and Keith Richards collaborated extensively on writing and composing the song, which was recorded in late 1977. A bootleg version with Richards singing exists. The Stones, longtime country music fans, incorporated many aspects of Bakersfield-style country music into this song. These included in particular Ronnie Wood's use of a pedal steel guitar for a solo and highlights, an instrument used on other songs from the album such as "Shattered" and "When the Whip Comes Down." Also of note is the plodding rhythm of Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman. Richards performed acoustic and electric guitars as well as sharing piano duties with Jagger.

In a 1978 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Jagger said, "You know, when you drive through Bakersfield on a Sunday morning or Sunday evening - I did that about six months ago - all the country music radio stations start broadcasting black gospel services live from L.A. And that's what the song refers to. But the song's really about driving alone, listening to the radio." On influences, Jagger stated "I wouldn't say this song was influenced specifically by Gram (Parsons). That idea of country music played slightly tongue-in-cheek - Gram had that in 'Drugstore Truck Drivin' Man', and we have that sardonic quality, too." Asked by the interviewer if the girl in the song was a real one, Jagger replied, "Yeah, she's real, she's a real girl we used to know, we miss her."

Song #77 is "Connection" from the "Between The Buttons" album in 1967. It was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (but mostly Richards), features vocals by both of them and is said to be about the long hours the band spent in airports. The lyrics contain much rhyming based on the word connection. The lyrics also reflect very heavily the pressures the band was under by 1967:

My bags they get a very close inspection, I wonder why it is that they suspect 'em, They're dying to add me to their collection, And I don't know, If they'll let me go

The song was written before Jagger, Richards and fellow Rolling Stone Brian Jones were arrested by the police for drugs.

Although it was never released as a single, it is a popular live song. The song itself is built on a very simple chord progression featuring a repetitive drum pattern, Chuck Berry-like lead guitar from Richards, the piano of Jack Nitzsche, tambourine and organ pedals by multi-instrumentalist Jones, and bass by Wyman. Jagger, Jones, and Wyman later overdubbed handclaps. Jagger said in 1967, "That's me beating my hands on the bass drum."

Song #76 is "Love In Vain" from the "Let It Bleed" album in 1969. This is the second remake of a Robert Johnson song to come up on the countdown already. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards recalled:

For a time we thought the songs that were on that first album [King of the Delta Blues] were the only recordings (Robert Johnson had) made, and then suddenly around '67 or '68 up comes this second (bootleg) collection that included Love in Vain. Love in Vain was such a beautiful song. Mick and I both loved it, and at the time I was working and playing around with Gram Parsons, and I started searching around for a different way to present it, because if we were going to record it there was no point in trying to copy the Robert Johnson style or ways and styles. We took it a little bit more country, a little bit more formalized, and Mick felt comfortable with that.

In a 1995 interview with Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone magazine, Mick Jagger commented on the song's arrangement:

We changed the arrangement quite a lot from Robert Johnson's. We put in extra chords that aren't there on the Robert Johnson version. Made it more country. And that's another strange song, because it's very poignant. Robert Johnson was a wonderful lyric writer, and his songs are quite often about love, but they're desolate.

Song #75 is "Off The Hook" from 1964. It was included on the American album "Rolling Stones, Now" and on the UK album "Rolling Stones No. 2." It was released on a single in the UK and in several other countries, the flip side of "Little Red Rooster."

Song #74 is "Harlem Shuffle" from the "Dirty Work" album in 1986. It's a remake of the 1963 hit by Bob and Earl. The original was a hit in America, but flopped in the UK in 1963. In 1969 it came back and made the top 10 in the UK. The record was co-arranged by a young Barry White.

The Stones version (with Bobbby Womack on backing vocals) went to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and #13 in the UK. Keith Richards had been looking for songs to possibly include on the album and had been working up songs with Ronnie Wood and Womack while waiting for Jagger to return to the studio in Paris after doing promo work on his solo album. To Richards' surprise, Jagger liked the feel and cut the vocals quickly. It became the first non-original song the Stones had released as an opening single off a new studio album since 1965.

Song #73 is "She's So Cold" from the "Emotional Rescue" album in 1980. It was also issued as the second single from the album, with "Send It to Me" as the B-side. Due to the song's lyric "she's so goddamned cold", the promotional copy sent to radio stations had a "cleaned up version" on one side, with the "God damn version" on the other. The single peaked at number 33 in the UK Singles Chart and number 26 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in November 1980.

Song #71 is "Anybody Seen My Baby?" from the "Bridges To Babylon" album in 1997. It peaked at number 22 on the UK Singles Chart to become the band's 38th top-forty hit in their home country. The song was more successful abroad, topping the RPM Top Singles chart in Canada and the LP3 chart in Poland while reaching the top 20 in several European countries, including Hungary and Spain. In the United States the song reached number three on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the song also carries writing credits for k.d. lang and Ben Mink. The song is known for its chorus, which sounds strikingly similar to lang's 1992 hit song "Constant Craving". Jagger and Richards claimed to have never heard the song before, only having discovered the similarity prior to the Stones' release. As Richards reported in his autobiography Life, "My daughter Angela and a friend were at Redlands and I was playing the record and they start singing this totally different song over it. They were listening to k.d. lang's 'Constant Craving.' It was Angela and her friend that recognized it." The two gave Lang credit, along with her co-writer Mink. Lang said she was "completely honored and flattered" by receiving the songwriting credit.

"Anybody Seen My Baby?" features wide-ranging inspirations, including sampling of hip-hop artist Biz Markie, making it the only song by The Rolling Stones to include sampling. Bass and keyboards on the songare performed by Jamie Muhoberac. Waddy Wachtel plays acoustic guitar and Jagger, Richards, and Wachtel play electric guitars. The song has a distinctive R&B feel, driven by Muhoberac's bass.

Song #70 is "Torn And Frayed," another track from "Exile On Main Street" in 1972. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "Torn and Frayed" is called "a twangy, three-chord honky tonk, but not typically country ... the progression of the chords brings gospel music to mind", by Bill Janovitz in his review of the song.

The song is included on side two of Exile, the side known for its acoustic folk and country tunes. Janovitz continues, "The music comes as close to definitive country-rock or Stax-like country-soul as anything from the era, barring Gram Parsons – an immediate influence on the Stones." Gram Parsons was present for the recording sessions of Exile at Nellcôte, and "Torn and Frayed" is perhaps the most overtly Parsons-influenced cut the Stones ever recorded, with a country-soul flavour reminiscent of the Parsons-fronted Flying Burrito Brothers' 1969 debut album The Gilded Palace of Sin.

In fact, Al Perkins, a good friend and collaborator of Parsons', appears on the track and performs the song's pedal steel guitar. Jagger performs lead vocals and is accompanied by Richards on backing. Richards provides the song's base of acoustic guitar and electric Telecaster. Mick Taylor bass and Charlie Watts performs drums. Organ is performed by Jim Price and piano is played by Nicky Hopkins. Recording took place at Los Angeles' Sunset Sound Studios between the months of December 1971 and March 1972.

Janovitz says of the lyrics, "'Torn and Frayed' follows a vagabond-like guitar player whose 'coat is torn and frayed'":

Song #69 is "Stupid Girl" from the "Aftermath" album in 1966. It was also issued as a single on the flip side of "Paint It, Black." Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "Stupid Girl" is noted for its apparently degrading lyrics towards women, a claim also made about other Stones songs like "Under My Thumb." On the song's lyrics, Richards said in a 1971 interview with Rolling Stone,

"It was all a spin-off from our environment... hotels, and too many dumb chicks. Not all dumb, not by any means, but that's how one got. When you're canned up - half the time it's impossible to go out - it was to go through a whole sort of football match."

When asked about the song and its influences, Jagger said in a 1995 interview with the same magazine,

"Yeah, it's much nastier than 'Under My Thumb'... Obviously, I was having a bit of trouble. I wasn't in a good relationship. Or I was in too many bad relationships. I had so many girlfriends at that point. None of them seemed to care they weren't pleasing me very much. I was obviously in with the wrong group."

Re: Best Rolling Stones Songs - RESULTS

Post by Hymie »

Song #68 is "We Love You" from the "Their Satanic Majesties Request" album in 1967. It strikes me as the closest the Stones ever came to making what sounds like a Beatles record. Of course the backing vocals by Lennon and McCartney may have something to do with that.

The song was written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It was first released as a single on 18 August 1967, with "Dandelion" as the B-side. The song peaked at number 8 in Britain and number 50 in America, where "Dandelion" was promoted as the A-side and peaked at number 14. The recording features a Mellotron part played by Brian Jones and backing vocals by John Lennon and Paul McCartney of the Beatles.

Written in the aftermath of the drugs arrests faced by Jagger and Keith Richards at the Redlands country home of the latter in Sussex that year, "We Love You" opens with the sounds of entry into jail, and a cell door clanging shut. The draconian nature of the sentences handed down to the two Stones relative to the charges prompted a stern editorial in The Times on 1 July 1967, titled "Who breaks a butterfly upon a wheel?", in protest. The song's lyrics appear to be "a spoof" of the Lennon–McCartney song "All You Need Is Love", which the Beatles performed on the Our World satellite broadcast on 25 June. Alternatively, as Lennon insisted was the case, in his famous 1970 Rolling Stone interview, the lyrics can be seen as echoing the message of the Beatles song, on which Jagger and Richards were among the many chorus singers. On close examination, "We Love You" espouses a strong anti-establishment stance, proclaiming "we don't care if you hound we and lock the doors around we" and "you will never win we, your uniforms don't fit we."

Song #66 is "Memory Motel" from the "Black And Blue" album in 1976. There will be one other song from that album. The song is credited to singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards. It is one of the few which feature both members sharing lead vocals. The song itself is over seven minutes long, one of the longest songs by the Rolling Stones. Memory Motel in Montauk that was said to be the inspiration for the song.

Jagger began writing the song before beginning the Stones' Tour of the Americas '75 while staying with Richards at Andy Warhol's house in Montauk, New York and finished it while on tour. This is reflected in the song's lyrics where Jagger describes having to leave for Baton Rouge, where the Stones played two warm up shows at Louisiana State University, and where he describes subsequent experiences on the road.

The title comes from an actual motel in Montauk, on Long Island. The lyrics to the song have long drawn speculation as to who the "Hannah baby" in the lyrics refer to. Carly Simon is often a name considered, due to Jagger's descriptions of the woman throughout the song; 'Hannah' was in reference to Annie Leibovitz, who was the Rolling Stones 1975 Tour of the Americas photographer. She spent time with the band during their rehearsals at Andy Warhol's complex near Montauk. Jagger describes her thus:

Hannah honey was a peachy kind of girl; Her eyes were hazel, And her nose was slightly curved....

Her eyes were hazel, And her teeth were slightly curved; She took my guitar and she began to play, She sang a song to me, Stuck right in my brain... When I asked her where she headed for, "Back up to Boston, I’m singing in a bar."

The lyrics talk of the fading love brought on by a one-night stand at said motel. The song describes the female subject as a strong, independent woman, comparable in many ways to the female subject of "Ruby Tuesday", with Richards repeated refrain:

She got a mind of her own, And she use it well...

Richards did not play guitar on this piece; Black and Blue has long been known as the album used to find a replacement for Mick Taylor, who left right before work was to begin on it. Harvey Mandel plays electric guitar while Wayne Perkins performs acoustic. Jagger, Richards, and Billy Preston play acoustic piano, electric piano, and string synthesizer on the song, respectively. Preston also contributes backing vocals along with Ron Wood, who would eventually become the Stones' lead guitarist. The song was recorded in Munich, Germany at Musicland Studios in March and April 1975. Overdubs and re-recordings were performed later in the year.

"Memory Motel" has long been a fan favourite from the Stones' canon of work. It is often overlooked, possibly due to its length and downbeat feel, much like the album it comes from. It was one of the highlights of the Stones' 1998 live album No Security, where Dave Matthews took up lead vocals with Jagger and Richards. The song has been played live on every tour since the 1994 Voodoo Lounge Tour.

Song #65 is "Back Street Girl" from 1967. It was on the UK version of the "Between The Buttons" album and on "Flowers" in the USA. Mick Jagger in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in 1968 was asked how he felt about the album Between the Buttons. He said this of "Between the Buttons": "I don't know, it just isn't any good. "Back Street Girl" is about the only [song] I like."

Song #64 is "Dandelion" which was a single that was not on any album until one of the greatest hits packages. It was written by Mick and Keith and first released as a B-side to "We Love You" in August 1967. With lyrical references to British counting or nursery rhymes, it reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart and number 14 on the US Billboard 100 singles chart. The first demo version of “Dandelion” was recorded in November 1966. Originally titled “Sometimes Happy, Sometimes Blue,” it had different lyrics and was sung and played by Keith Richards. On the released version, Mick Jagger sings the lead vocal. The Rolling Stones have never performed "Dandelion" live.

Song #63 is "Route 66" from 1964. It was included on the band's first album. The song is best known by Nat King Cole, whose version was a hit in 1946. It was written by Bobby Troup. The song uses a twelve-bar blues arrangement and the lyrics follow the path of U.S. Route 66 (US 66), which traversed the western two-thirds of the U.S. from Chicago, Illinois, to Los Angeles, California.

Bobby Troup got the idea for the song on a cross-country drive from Pennsylvania to California. Troup wanted to try his hand as a Hollywood songwriter, so he and his wife, Cynthia, packed up their 1941 Buick and headed west. The trip began on US 40 and continued along US 66 to the California coast. Troup initially considered writing a tune about US 40, but Cynthia suggested the title "Get Your Kicks on Route 66". The song was composed on the ten-day journey, and completed by referencing maps when the couple arrived in Los Angeles.

The lyrics read as a mini-travelogue about the major stops along the route, listing several cities and towns through which Route 66 passes, viz. St Louis; Joplin, Missouri; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Amarillo, Texas; Gallup, New Mexico; Flagstaff, Arizona; Winona, Arizona; Kingman, Arizona; Barstow, California; and San Bernardino, California. Winona is the only town out of sequence: it was a very small settlement east of Flagstaff, and might indeed have been forgotten if not for the lyric "Don't forget Winona", written to rhyme with "Flagstaff, Arizona". Many artists who have covered the tune over the years have changed the initial lyrics, usually to "It goes to St. Louis, down through Missouri..." then continuing on with Oklahoma City and so on. Of the eight states through which the actual route passes, only Kansas and its cities—US 66 spends just eleven miles (18 km) inside the state’s southeast corner—are not mentioned by the song. Chuck Berry famously mispronounces Barstow to rhyme with "cow" instead of correctly pronouncing it to rhyme with "go".

Song #62 is "Let It Loose" from "Exile On Main Street" in 1972. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, “Let It Loose” is an emotional gospel blues ballad with a fervent religious feeling, the song being one of the band’s prominent forays into soul and gospel during the Exile era after Jagger had attended the services of the Reverend James Cleveland and remained deeply impressed by the singing of the gospel choir.

A portion of the lyrics were lifted from the song "Man of Constant Sorrow". In an interview with Uncut magazine in April 2010, Jagger was asked about this song’s lyrical content; he replied: “I think Keith wrote that, actually. That’s a very weird, difficult song. I had a whole other set of lyrics to it, but they got lost by the wayside. I don't think that song has any semblance of meaning. It’s one of those rambling songs. I didn’t really understand what it was about, after the event.” However, in the same article Richards says “I would never take Mick’s recollection of anything seriously.”

Recording began in December 1971 and continued through March 1972, with some recording taking place at Nellcôte using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. With Jagger on lead vocals, backing vocals are provided by Tami Lynn, Dr. John, Clydie King, Venetta Fields, Shirley Goodman and Joe Greene. Electric guitars were performed by Richards and Mick Taylor, and played through a Leslie speaker. Bass is performed by Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts on drums, Nicky Hopkins on piano, Bobby Keys on tenor saxophone, and Jim Price plays both trombone and trumpet.

Song #61 is "Time Waits For No One" from 1974. It's from the "It's Only Rock And Roll" album. Credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "Time Waits for No One" is a slower, smoother song than the ones for which the Stones are best known. The track features a distinctive groove that has been compared to the later song "Waiting on a Friend" (recording of which in fact started in late 1972). It is also noted for its distinct Latin influences.

The song opens with a riff by Richards which echoes throughout the rest of the song. Drummer Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman keep affected jazz beats. Song contributor Ray Cooper provides the song's distinctive driving percussions, including tambourine, maracas and a knocking beat that carries through the entire song like the sound of a ticking clock. Wyman also contributes an early use of synthesizer on a Stones track. Stones recording veteran Nicky Hopkins provides the song's swirling piano runs.

The song's most noteworthy elements, however, are Mick Taylor's extended guitar solo and Jagger's lyrics. Taylor credits inspiration for the solo to a visit to Brazil following the Stones' European Tour 1973. Taylor's solo guitar piece carries the song to its conclusion. The song, though well regarded among the Stones' canon of work, has never been performed live.

Song #60 is "Sway" from the "Sticky Fingers" album in 1971. It was also issued as a single on the flip side of "Wild Horses." This single was released in the US only. Initial pressings of the single contain an alternate take; later pressings include the album version instead. Credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "Sway" is a slower blues song and was the first song recorded by the band at Stargroves.

The song features a bottleneck slide guitar solo during the bridge and a dramatic, virtuoso outro solo (both performed by Mick Taylor). Rhythm guitar performed by Jagger was his first electric guitar performance on an album. The strings on the piece were arranged by Paul Buckmaster, who also worked on other songs from Sticky Fingers. Richards added his backing vocals but provided no guitar to the track. Pete Townshend, Billy Nichols and Ronnie Lane are believed to contribute backing vocals as well.

Song #59 is "Loving Cup" from "Exile On Main Street" in 1972. I still don't get what people see in the tracks from this album. They are all very muddy sounding and very nondescript to my ears. Oh well. Mick Jagger performs lead and backing vocals with Keith Richards. Richards also performs the song's guitars. Bass and drums are provided by Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts, respectively. Piano is provided by Stones' recording veteran Nicky Hopkins. Saxophone is by Bobby Keys and both trumpet and trombone are by Jim Price. The album's producer, Jimmy Miller, provides the maracas. It is not known who plays the steel drum. The band Phish frequently does "Loving Cup" during live performances.

Just got this from one 71 year old friend:

Agreed. I never understood why people were so crazy about ‘Exile’. I didn’t think it was very good then & still don’t today. There was not one song from that LP that made my list & I would put 13 different Stones’ LPs in front of it.

My girlfriend who is also 71 said virtually the same thing on the phone yesterday. The only track she likes is "Stop Breaking Down."

Although I love Exile, I gotta agree with Hymie because I don't see why the majority sees it as the Stones' best album. Let It Bleed will always be their masterpiece ;)

I agree about Exile. I just removed it from my all-time list, thanks to this discussion and the memory of listening to it. I don't know, I may have to go back and listen to it again, but I don't wanna do that cos of bad memories. A dilemma. I'm currently rating it as solid 3.5 stars. No memorable songs for me.

To me, Exile is the perfect synthesis of the band’s various influences, from rock to blues to country to gospel. It’s astounding that a British band holed up in a recording studio in France could sound so American.

Plus, how can you deny songs like “Rocks Off” and “Happy” and “Tumbling Dice”?

I have no problem that you add personal feelings about the songs. But since I felt that Exile is actually underappreciated in this poll, I thought that some props were in place.

I have made the same journey as many others. It was a bit difficult to get into at first, but really rewarding when it clicked with me. It’s such a marvellous blend of rock, blues, country and gospel. The gospel feel of some of the tracks are the highlights for me, but it’s also an album where I wouldn’t want to change anything, the album flow is something special.

Only two songs were in my top 20, but another 10 songs made the 21-50 section.

I find Exile a bit of a slog to get through but Happy and Tumbling Dice are two fantastic songs - easily up there with any of the other classics - especially when played live.

They are the only two songs from the album that made my personal top 50.

My favorite Stones album, as an album, is SOME GIRLS. I like every song on that album, and it's really the only one that I ever played much as a full album. There are no incredibly great songs, but every song is at least good to excellent.

Maybe that's the key. It takes many listens before it clicks.

I find it hard to even consider any of their stuff as gospel. Maybe because I have no interest in lyrics, and I listen to plenty of black gospel from the 40s, 50s and 60s, which the Stones sound nothing like to me. I listen mainly to Gospel vocal groups, like the Swan Silvertones, Soul Stirrers, Five Blind Boys, etc....

Not that you could even tell what the lyrics are with Mush Mouth Jagger singing. The way he slurs the words on most songs, I have no idea what he's saying.

Maybe it's this. All of my friends are (pre-1960s) blues, country, R&B, soul and gospel fans first, even before rock. Perhaps since we all listen to Wolf, Muddy, Sonny Boy, Little Walter, Country and gospel all the time that hearing the Stones try to do those styles does not impress as as much as it would listeners who don't listen a lot to those genres?

The Stones do some of the better blues records from among British rock groups, but as Mick says "Why would anyone want to listen to us do "I'm A King Bee" when they can listen to it by Slim Harpo?"

"Shake Your Hips" is pretty good by the Stones, but it's nowhere hear as good as Slim Harpo's version IMO.

Song #58 is "I'm Free" from 1965. It was the flip side of "Get Off Of My Cloud" in America. It was also on the UK version of "Out of Our Heads." "I'm Free" was listed on 16 ballots, the most of any song to come up so far. Rolling Stone magazine ranked "I'm Free" as the 78th greatest Rolling Stones song, saying: "A tambourine-spangled folk rocker with chime-y, Byrds-like guitar, this offhandedly libertarian tune wasn't a big hit, but it's one of the Sixties' most pliant anthems." The Guardian identified the song as an example of the improving songwriting of Jagger and Richards at the time, describing the song as "gleefully hymning the arrogance of youth." The song uses a line from The Beatles' 1964 song "Eight Days a Week": "Hold me, love me, hold me, love me."

Re: Best Rolling Stones Songs - RESULTS

Post by CupOfDreams »

Exile is my 2nd favorite Stones album. It's one that did not immediately grab me like some of the others, but once I got it I loved it. It flows incredibly well. It doesn't sound like an album looking for hits, which is probably a drawback for some. It does contain my 2nd favorite Stones song "Let It Loose" which ended up 62 on this list.
