People don't seem to like my picks much.
Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand - Sir Duke (1976)

BTW, I haven't been participating; but, if I had, I would've given your song "Handlebars" a 9. At the time, I thought it was a clever jab at how a kid bragging about how he can "ride a bike with no handlebars" can eventually turn into an adult narcissist who rises to power and eventually brings about world destruction. I can't put my finger on just why, but somehow this message has seemed relevant in the past couple of years or so ...

70. Iron Maiden – Paschendale - 8
Iron Maiden is probably the 'loudest' band I like to listen to, and this song does not disappoint. It's got a great symphonic metal sound, despite it's length it's never boring and a nice, fitting and not too abrupt end. 10/10 would listen again.

I like me some Iron Maiden too. They are a metal band from before grunting became the standard and to me that makes a lot of difference. This band knows how to make a song sound like an awesome blockbuster movie; a cheesy blockbuster that you can't help to resist.

Today another very short song, but also one by a very obscure group. They existed for only a year and released one album with only 14 ratings on RYM.
71. Inglebirds - Intro
Year: 2014
Album: Big Bad Birds
Biggest Fan: Krurze (#830)

Perfect length for the amount of energy that the lyrics contain. Furthermore I did enjoy the vocals, for as far as I like rap. The string backing is just a cherry on top.
A full album is quite the accomplishment for only existing one year, many recent bands seem to do singles and/or EPs for the first few years.

Inglebirds - Intro: 7
It keeps word, as this really feels like an intro, but whereas that mostly means a music only track, or in rap a skit, this is also a real song. Above all, it feels like it could be an intro showtune to a tv-series too, as if the heroes of the show are being announced. The flow of the rap is pretty good here, but it is mostly the goofy-yet-epic string/song part near the end that sold me on this one. A pretty wacky entry to this poll by any means.

I don't understand so much about what the rappers are saying that it took me ten seconds to understand that they weren't singing in English:-)
I thought it was nicer than most of what I usually hear on rap! 5/10
72. Os Paralamas Do Sucesso – Lanterna dos Afogados
the production seems to me very, very, very dated... a little "soap opera introduction". Sorry. 3/10

While I don't think that it's a bad song, the music does seem to be a bit on the light side and neither the horns nor the guitar solo could entice me to rate this any higher than just decent.

Os Paralamas Do Sucesso – Lanterna dos Afogados: 3
I can somewhat get the soap opera introduction that Romain hears in this. It tries too hard to sound melodramatic, but without the musical skill to actually pull it of. The instrumentals seem underdeveloped, while the singing is overdone. That guitar solo sounds both loud and weak. I read a translation of the lyrics, which at least are not bad. I notice it has quite an amount of listens on Spotify and it seems they were popular in Brazil and neighbouring countries, but I can't hear what makes them special.

I don't think that it's actually a bad song, but it's just really not for me. Jazz is already not really 'my jazz', and getting 26 minutes of it is a bit too much. I wouldn't have minded some more variation either. It also loses a point for the drummer whose pay seems to be based on the amount of cymbal hits.

The “5” Royales – Crazy, Crazy, Crazy
Great group. In the late 50s they would more prominently feature Lowman Pauling's guitar and he would lay down some of the most blistering guitar of that time - check out my personal favorite The Slummer The Slum for an example. Chuck Berry had nothing on him! As for this song, it's some nice bluesy R&B with a great sax solo and really nice smooth vocals. 8
Circle Jerks – Red Tape
Sometimes I am amazed with how much hardcore bands can fit into a sub 1 minute song. Wham bam thank you ma'am! 7
Iron Maiden – Paschendale
Always have a soft spot for Maiden. Lost track of them when Bruce initially left but then Book of Souls happened which again peaked my interest, leading me to search out their early 2000's work which includes a fair amount of good stuff (though clearly paling to their 90s peak). This album had me worried though - quite possibly one of the worst album covers in history for a band that is known for their iconic artwork. But like their other stuff in that period there was some good stuff on there including this one. At first I dismissed this song - have heard them do this kind of song better many times before. But it grew on me - not in small part due to the lyrics which does a good job of detailing the death of a WWI soldier. 7
Inglebirds - Intro
Speaking of WWI - this song made me feel like I had to duck for cover from the incoming Maschinengewehr fire. Didn't bother looking for a translation for the lyrics because ultimately I couldn't get past the sensation that this guys were just butchering T.I.'s What You Know. 2
Archie Shepp - Hipnosis
So much potential here. They settle into a nice groove and Shepp lays on some tasty improv that doesn't stray too far out of the stratosphere. Unfortunately, it overstays it's welcome by half without enough to warrant its 26 minute running time - definitely living up to its name. This could be edited down to a great 7 minute song. 6

I seem to be in the minority here, but I think this is 26 minutes well spend. I only think it is monotonous for a little while and with good reason (see the title), but the second half is actually very varied, with among other things a great piano showcase and a martial drum bit. There is a lot of tension and release in this track, while never quite letting you fully go. A lot of atmosphere and feeling. As per usual I listened to this three times before voting, but it was far from a chore to go through this thrice. It was my pleasure.

Feels a bit too generic James Brown to impress. Also, the instrumentals seem a little too subdues. It never hits as hard as I should like.

Most of my stuff is not strange enough to have people giving them ones and twos, but not appealing enough to more modern tastes to get nines and tens from most folks around here.Zombeels wrote:69. Circle Jerks – Red Tape 1

Simple fun from the eighties.

Re: Biggest Fan - March 2019
Bit behind, I'll probably do each group of 10 as a block.
61. Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry – When It’s Love Time - 8
70. Iron Maiden – Paschendale - 8
63. The Replacements – Hold My Life - 7
66. Sweet – The Six Teens - 6
67. Flobots - Handlebars - 6
I can try to sing in monotone, in monotone, in monotone... I'll fully admit this one is only above 5 for me through nostalgia.
65. The “5” Royales – Crazy, Crazy, Crazy - 6
62. Albin de La Simone – Le grand amour - 5
68. The Format – She Doesn’t Get It - 3
Pretty standard 2007 indie. Band name's a little on the nose.
64. Mall Grab – B.F.O.D.A.A.S. - 3
69. Circle Jerks – Red Tape - 1
The machine-gun vocal style is not my jam. Probably would like it more in the context of the album.

Very psyched-out sounding dub. Not something I can see myself putting on a lot, but there still is something to it.

The title is well chosen, the regular and inexorable rhythm should allow you to enter a trance after ten minutes. I was afraid of the previous comments, but I rather liked the whole thing. 6/10
74. James Brown & His Furious Flames – Tell Me What I Did Wrong
As usual. 5/10
75. Les Rita Mitsouko, featuring Sparks – Singing in the Shower
An all-time favourite without a doubt. One of the songs I never remove from my mp3 player 10/10
76. Lee “Scratch” Perry & The Upsetters – Dread Lion
I like it a lot, the effects around the melody add all the salt of the song and the melody itself is great. 7/10
77. Adam & the Ants – Stand and Deliver
I never refuse a good 80's song with a memorable chorus. This one is not my favorite, far from it, but it is very nice anyway. 5.5/10 Is it reall a Sonofsamiam choice?, I'm a little bit surprised).

I never refuse a good 80's song with a memorable chorus. This one is not my favorite, far from it, but it is very nice anyway. 5.5/10 Is it reall a Sonofsamiam choice?, I'm a little bit surprised).

No, it is a nomination by Brad. My mistake. I fixed it. Curiously, I got the ranking right.Romain wrote: 77. Adam & the Ants – Stand and Deliver

Adam & the Ants - Stand and Deliver: 7
A very busy song, but it has spirit and is good, goofy fun.

70. Iron Maiden – Paschendale (6/10)
71. Inglebirds - Intro (4/10)
72. Os Paralamas Do Sucesso – Lanterna dos Afogados (4/10).
73. Archie Shepp - Hipnosis (7/10) : a very good jazz track, I like the neverending high tempo
74. James Brown & His Furious Flames – Tell Me What I Did Wrong (7/10) Another one of these artists that cannot do wrong, in spite of what he sings...
75. Les Rita Mitsouko, featuring Sparks – Singing in the Shower (10/10) I agree with Romain, les Rita never fail. This collaboration with Sparks is a pure hit, reaches my top 500.
76. Lee “Scratch” Perry & The Upsetters – Dread Lion (7/10) - always partial to a good rub-a-dub !
77. Adam & the Ants – Stand and Deliver (6/10) - very busy song indeed, but it has something.
