Great Rock Discography Survey

Post by Moonbeam »

I'm surprised we haven't done this on the forum! I learned about the Great Rock Discography Survey on RYM many years ago, and it was a fun challenge to complete. I thought I would revise my list this year as a way of honing my artist list, but I thought others might be interested in the fun as well.

The Great Rock Discography Survey is a way of representing your musical taste by coming up with a list of 200 songs as follows:

10 songs each by artists ranked 1-10
5 songs each by artists ranked 11-20
3 songs each by artists ranked 21-30
20 songs by 20 different artists not in your top 30

Anybody up for this? I'm going to think about mine and post it here soon.

Although I don't really rate artists (and what I listen to changes a lot), it does sound like something fun to try.

I've come up with a formula that helps me rank artists. It's not perfect but it comes pretty close!

Question: is there any particular criteria for picking the songs per artist (i.e. our all-time favorite songs or just basic recommendations for people to listen to)?

This is going off my top 50 artist list from last time. I doubt it's going to look much different this year, other than shuffling the order around. It's not that easy to infiltrate the list, especially since we're talking about evaluating discographies instead of an album or song. (I added a song by a new candidate at the end.) My top 1,000 song list basically took care of everything from there.

1. The Beatles

In My Life
Hey Jude
Ticket to Ride
Revolution
Let It Be
Help!
A Hard Day's Night
Nowhere Man
Strawberry Fields Forever
Penny Lane

2. Nirvana

Smells Like Teen Spirit
Come As You Are
Lithium
In Bloom
The Man Who Sold the World
All Apologies
Heart-Shaped Box
Jesus Don't Want Me for a Sunbeam
Dive
About a Girl

3. Bruce Springsteen

Tunnel of Love
Dancing in the Dark
Born to Run
Backstreets
Glory Days
My Hometown
I'm on Fire
Cover Me
Hungry Heart
The Promised Land

4. Neil Young

Great project! One thing's for sure, it exposes the problems with the "points system" I used in my all-time artists list. Primarily, I need to bridge the gap between favorites with smaller discographies vs. those that have been around forever and have released tons of material. For example, using my system, Eminem was #9 (way too high) and Sarah McLachlan was #21. Even though there are only 4 albums from Sarah that I really like, there are at least ten songs of hers I'd rate higher than anything Eminem's ever done. But using the Great Rock Discography, I'd only list 3 songs by her and 10 by Eminem. I look forward to using my annual top 200 songs & top 50 albums as my source the next time our artist poll rolls around. I think this will give the artists with more songs I love an edge over the artists who just have tons of songs I like, which is the way it probably should be.

I mostly see people who complete this list their favorites.

I did a bit of digging for context, and found this here:

Background:
On the last few pages of the 1995 edition of Martin C. Strong's "Great Rock Discography," the author asks, "Which are the greatest artists & songs?' He then establishes criteria for answering the question, shares his selections, and encourages readers to take his challenge: Compile their own list and mail it in. In subsequent printings and updated versions of the book, nothing came of it -- perhaps no one bothered replying. But the concept is both enlightening and frustrating.

The Guidelines:
Simple to understand - arduous to complete. Select:
► 10 Best Tracks From Your Favorite 10 Artists #1-10
► 5 Best Tracks From Your Next 10 Fave Artists #11-20
► 3 Best Tracks From Your Next 10 Fave Artists #21-30
► 20 Bonus Tracks From Other Artists
Grand total: 200 tracks.

Do you have a ranked all-time list of your favorite songs and albums? If so, you could use a point system from those polls to give greater weight to higher placements.

I don't have one for albums yet, but I do have an all-time list for songs (though not as "deep" as I'd like it to be). Still, this would've been a great way to boost those artists I'm thinking about (Joy Division, Love, Sarah McLachlan, Bourgeois Tagg, The Fixx, Chromatics). Unfortunately, I probably won't have time to go back and do it now, but it's sure something to remember for next time!

I have completed the task, and it does not necessarily represent my all-time songs list. I wanted to make this so that someone reviewing my list could get a sense of my musical taste (what I look for in music). It would be a cool project to do the inverse of this - give a list of music that represents what you feel is musically offensive, the opposite of what you look for in music.

I don't want to reveal my top 30 artists as of yet (largely because I haven't really worked on it). I pretty much went off my 2016 list, and listed in alphabetical order in each segment.

ABBA: Dancing Queen, Eagle, Move On, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Waterloo, Soldiers, Thank You for the Music, Angeleyes, Happy New Year, The Name of the Game
The Beatles: Let It Be, Strawberry Fields Forever, Yesterday, Octopus's Garden, I Want to Hold Your Hand, Come Together, Something, Ticket to Ride, She Loves You, I'm Only Sleeping
Green Day: Going to Pasalacqua, Are We the Waiting, Macy's Day Parade, Homecoming, Stuck With Me, Pulling Teeth, Redundant, Longview, Brain Stew, Jesus of Suburbia
Joe Hisaishi: The Legend of Ashitaka, Sanpo, Ashitaka and San, The Demon God, One Summer's Day, The Village in May, Path of the Wind, Princess Mononoke Theme, Kodamas, My Neighbor Totoro Theme
Kanye West: Power, Through the Wire, Devil in the New Dress, We Don't Care, The New Workout Plan, All of the Lights, Flashing Lights, Can't Tell Me Nothing, Slow Jamz, Freeee
Kate Bush: Running Up That Hill, And Dream of Sheep, Moving, Hounds of Love, Cloudbusting, Them Heavy People, The Kick Inside, Jig of Life, Snowed in at Wheeler Street, Wuthering Heights

This looks fun, but it wouldn’t make sense to me to focus on so few artists for a ”rock discography”. I don’t think any artist has more than 2 songs in my all time top 200.

It does seem a bit vertical for you, but for me, it’s pretty horizontal! Prince has nearly 40 songs in my top 100!

Preface: I made this mainly for myself. It seemed like a fun way to make a snapshot of the artists I currently enjoy listening to, to look back on in a few years. I do not keep a running list of (ranked) music (as of yet). My listening of music is currently really horizontal, and while I generally do like album tracks, I haven't gotten to most of them, which is why the list mainly features singles. Even though this list is subject to (a lot of) change, it's also really solid so I though I'd post it anyway, in case someone is in for a venture into this beautiful mess.
