The last few years I’ve agreed with the #1. In 2016 and 2018 I agreed, in 2017 I had same 1 and 2 but reversed, and in 2015 I didn’t agree at the time but do now.

Interesting to see how these choices have aged. Only 2006, 2007, and 2017 differ from the #1 album on AM. And only The Life Pursuit is far down the list (1441 overall).

2008 too, as Portishead’s “Third” is the AM AOTY, although I think the AOTY at the time was the Fleet Foxes album.

Regardless, the AMF AOTY is always the critics’ number 1 or number 2 AOTY, with the extremely notable exception of 2006. “The Life Pursuit” is the 24th most acclaimed album of that year.

It'd be interesting to delve into the statistical reasons we keep coming up with the same choice as the critics. Is it because people whose taste is similar to critics are generally the most drawn to this site? Is it because critic ratings affect our exposure to music? Could our reaction to music be affected by the priming we get from the critic ratings? Or is there something statistically intrinsic to these albums that a group of people who all listen to large amounts of music will converge on?

I wish I could love Dirty Computer more. I did on first listen, but by after the third time I had to stop before I started to dislike it. Musically it is pretty great, but these lyrics are on the nose in almost a next-level kind of way. It really is someone beating you on the head with a message over and over, without ever deepening or varying it. Of course, that was the point for Monáe and she is allowed to follow her muse. At least I agree with the message, or else it would have been insufferable. For me lyrics can't help but play a part and I like them with a bit of edge or mystery and Dirty Computer has none of either. Also, I have noticed something in me that rejects completely self-confident music after a while. Fun for one or two songs, but being on top of the world for a complete album apparently makes me wary. I guess I relate more to humble people or the broken souls of the world. And it is not the time for that first group of people in music, as mainstream music reminds me every day.
So Dirty Computer is not bad and I can see why people love it, but in the end it is not really for me.
I think the empowerment of Dirty Computer is a very important and needed message. For someone who is a queer black woman to put out an album of such strength, unapologetic frankness and joy surely is an inspiration to those who struggle in their daily lives due to prejudice and bigotry. Celebrating what makes someone a "dirty computer" is a very empowering thing - and while I'm not part of any of those groups, the realisation that I am likely autistic and feeling empowered to celebrate it by an album like this inspires me! "Love me baby, love me for who I am" is what everyone should be able to say, but many, many people still could only muster "Love me DESPITE who I am" if they even feel worthy of love at all.
I agree with everything you say. This is album is very much needed and very timely. I don't begrudge this album it's success and acclaim. I just state why it just lacks some personal impact.

I liked the album, but I'm going to agree with the critics on this one. It's a good album for sure, but not really AOTY worthy.

Here's how I'd rank our 14 AOTYs...

1. Sound of Silver
2. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
3. Channel Orange
4. Modern Vampires of the City
5. Illinois
6. Blackstar
7. To Pimp a Butterfly
8. Merriweather Post Pavilion
9. Fleet Foxes
10. Let England Shake
11. Lost in the Dream
12. Dirty Computer
13. American Dream
14. The Life Pursuit

That being said, all these albums except American Dream and The Life Pursuit are in my top 500 of all time. And even those two albums are really good.

I’d rank the Life Pursuit as my number 1. Of ‘06 number 3 behind the Long Blondes and Camera Obscura. Probably my favorite year ever in music. The rest could fight amongst themselves. Maybe PJ at 2.

Since we're doing this ranking thing:

1. Frank Ocean | Channel Orange
2. Vampire Weekend | Modern Vampires of the City
3. Janelle Monáe | Dirty Computer
4. Kendrick Lamar | To Pimp a Butterfly
5. PJ Harvey | Let England Shake
6. Kanye West | My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
7. Sufjan Stevens | Illinois
8. Belle & Sebastian | The Life Pursuit
9. Fleet Foxes | Fleet Foxes
10. David Bowie | ★
11. LCD Soundsystem | Sound of Silver
12. Animal Collective | Merriweather Post Pavilion
-------------------------------------------------
Didn't rank these albums in my top 20 at the end of the year
13. LCD Soundsystem | American Dream
14. The War on Drugs | Lost in the Dream

It looks like I prefer this decade to last, but that's not true. It's just that I prefer the forum's choices this decade more than last.

My rank for the year in parenthesis:

2005 | Sufjan Stevens | Illinois (1)
2016 | David Bowie | ★ (1)
2006 | Belle & Sebastian | The Life Pursuit (2)
2011 | PJ Harvey | Let England Shake (2)
2007 | LCD Soundsystem | Sound of Silver (3)

2015 | Kendrick Lamar | To Pimp a Butterfly (3)
2010 | Kanye West | My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (7)
2008 | Fleet Foxes | Fleet Foxes (10)
2018 | Janelle Monáe | Dirty Computer (21)
2017 | LCD Soundsystem | American Dream (25)

2012 | Frank Ocean | Channel Orange (40)
2014 | The War on Drugs | Lost in the Dream (NA)
2009 | Animal Collective | Merriweather Post Pavilion (NA)
2013 | Vampire Weekend | Modern Vampires of the City (NA)

It's weird that roughly half of the albums were among my favorite 1-3 for their respective years and the other half weren't factors at all in my year-end list. I would love for more surprise picks like The Life Pursuit in the future, but the forum was a much different place back then, which allowed for some more under-the-radar choices in consensus lists.
