MCCh 2019 (05) March 31

Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2019 (update March 31)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 34 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: Clash (new); DIY; Drowned In Sound; God Is In The Tv (new); Load And Quiet (new); NME: The 405; The Guardian; Music OMH (out) ; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club (out); Consequence Of Sound; Earbuddy; Exclaim!; Nothern Transmissions (new); Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Spectrum Culture (new); Under The Radar

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, Entertainment Weekly, etc…

Wow! Ain’t it strange how actual the 17 year old looks younger than the woman who ranks one notch above her?

I'm glad to see Billie Eilish getting a little love. I had no idea how the critics would respond, but the first time I heard her I thought she might've created a new genre: Gothic teeny-bopper. (Maybe only because my 11 year old daughter loves her.)

Hey Otis, appreciate all you do here but I am curious as to what's different in your aggregating calculations that's allowing Deerhunter to still hold down the #2 spot here when it's dropped out of the top 30 on Metacritic in its 7 review min aggregate list, and just barely cling to top-30 status with a 10 review minimum on Album Of The Year.

It's number 2 placement here is confusing given how good-not-great most of the reviews have been (not to mention how good-not-great the album actually is). Is it tracking way better in Europe in periodicals/websites AOTY/Metacritic typical ignore?

New update time:

This update I mourn the fall of Beirut. That one has grown on me.

I don't think I ever saw as big a difference between this list and RYM as with Billie Eilish. Here she ranks top 10, while the community of Rate Your Music in general seems to deeply hate her. I haven't gotten around her yet, so I still have to decide who is right.

Isn't that the normal thing, people looking younger than people who are older then them? Or do I miss the point of what you are saying?

Hello, Illiniq.

Certainly, the same question you can ask Metacritic and AOTY: How is it possible that Deerhunter is so low on the list of the year if McChart places him at number 2?

Well, there are several explanations. McChart does not take into account the ratings of websites that have given few points to the album (Sputnik, TinyMixTapes, Crack ...). These media do not have the features to enter our chart.

On the other hand, the album has received good reviews in Europe (Gafffa-sw, Mondosonoro, Musikexpress, Nojesguiden ...)

Sorry for the mistakes. I do not know how to write in English.

I hope you understand what I meant.
