R.I.P. Dr. John

Post by Harold »

And news has broken of the death, at 77, of another great figure: New Orleans legend Mac Rebennack, a.k.a. Dr. John, "The Night Tripper." The good doctor's extraordinary 1968 album Gris-Gris belongs in everyone's collection, but everything he ever recorded or played on is worth hearing and imbued with his indelible (not inimitable, though - it's quite easy to imitate Dr. John) personality.

Cool figure. I played his Gris-Gris album quite a few times. His voodoo blues remains something unique, but he is a good blues rocker in general. I noticed him first in the concert film The Last Waltz, were he waas one of many special guests of The Band. He was one of the guests I never heard of before that, but he stood out, indeed because of that personality.
