The Verlaines - Angela: 6
The abrupt stop-start rhythm initially made me think my earphones were glitching. Needed a few listens to really get a sense of the song, but it is growing on me.

190. Magazine – You Never Knew Me - 9
I could totally see this becoming a 10 in some time. I love new wave, and especially the kind of 'low energy', very progressive stuff. If we did the 1980 poll again, it'd probably end at #4 (which honestly still seems low, but 1980 was a very good year).
I'd honestly never given much thought to Magazine, besides the highly acclaimed 'Shot by Both Sides', which is a bit too punky for me, but I'll surely give their albums a spin.

Magazine – You Never Knew Me: 6
It's a good tune for sure.
It's a good tune for sure.
Re: Biggest Fan - July 2019
Otis Redding- Rock Me Baby 5 This feels nearly sacrilegious to say but Steve Cropper's solo reminds me too much of the late night talkshow-style of blues rock for comfort, in spite of Otis' typical full-throated vocals.
James Brown– I Don’t Want Nobody to Give Me Nothing (Open Up the Door, I’ll Get It Myself) 7 Strong message, restless groove, the breaks make it but loses a point for not completely justifying its 9-minute runtime.
The Verlaines- Angela 6 The transitions in the song aren't slick but that's almost certainly not the point. Could've done with an indie equivalent of Captain Beefheart to sing through the chaos.
Magazine- You Never Knew Me 6 Howard Devoto's vocals can grate on me (Shot by Both Sides is enough of a cast-iron tune to overlook that), the rhythm section are doing their best to keep the song slinky and unpredictable.

191. Thelonious Monk – In Walked Bud
Year: 1947*
Released as a single
Biggest Fan: fasbjd (#746)
*Thelonious Monk actually recorded this song several times in his career. The first dates from 1947 and this version was included in the famous compilation Genius of Modern Music Vol. 1. That is the one on the playlist. If fasbjd prefers another of Monk’s takes, please let me know.

Great Jazz from a great composer. For me it really hits the speed 'sweet spot', whereas I find the 40s bebop is generally a bit too 'rushed' for my taste.
I also want to add that I'm really digging the music 'choices' these last few weeks Rob, keep up the good work!

Thanks, but I can't take any credit on the 'choices', as as you know they are random. Also, some people give particularly low votes these weeks, so not everyone shares the sentiment that we get mostly good selections of course.BobPatience wrote: I also want to add that I'm really digging the music 'choices' these last few weeks Rob, keep up the good work!

The version I prefer is from the 1958 album Misterioso. It has one of the all-time great sax solos by Johnny Griffin. At one point he hits the wrong note and Monk cracks up - classic Monk.

I've replaced the version in the playlist with the one from Misterioso, though I don't ask anyone to change their vote (unless they want to). Do you want to rate it?fasbjd wrote:BobPatience wrote:191. Thelonious Monk – In Walked Bud - 8

The two versions are close in sound, with the older one oddly sounding more crisp, but the Misterioso version feels a little more loose and I can see why you'd prefer it. I think I do to, though both are very good.

They sound the same, because they are the same, the 'crispness' might be due to the other version being a remaster.Rob wrote: The two versions are close in sound, with the older one oddly sounding more crisp.
The version currently on the playlist is from a 2002 compilation album of (mainly blue note) recordings from before 1952.
The original Misterioso live album is this one: https://open.spotify.com/album/6BRZLnJX ... aSvnijvzlQ , featuring the 11:22 'In Walked Bud' with the renowned trumpet solo by Johnny Griffin.
FWIW I rate both versions an 8. I listened to the 11:22 track back-to-back now. But the original one is also a great pleasure.

Yes, this is the version I prefer. Griffin is actually on a tenor sax and I think steals the show.
Personally, I hate rating my selections because I love them all..but if I were to give a number I would say a solid 9.

I see, thanks. Good to know that there are two Misterioso albums by Monk, even if one is a posthumous compilation. It is also interesting how a remaster can give a song a different feel.BobPatience wrote:They sound the same, because they are the same, the 'crispness' might be due to the other version being a remaster.Rob wrote: The two versions are close in sound, with the older one oddly sounding more crisp.

I now added the 11 minute version you linked to the playlist. I'll see at a later moment if it changes my mind. Don't have the time today to focus on it.

Two fasbjd’s choices in a row. This time he shares an AM bubbler with us:
192. Lightnin’ Hopkins – Mojo Hand
Year: 1962
Album: Mojo Hand
Biggest Fan: fasbjd (#771)

Today I leave for a holiday to Ireland, from which I return July 21st. I thought about supplying you with a list of daily songs for the time, but I decided that these days will serve as a short break. People can catch up with their listening to this list in the meantime; which might come in handy, as we approach #200, which means I’ll update the main list again. If you were meaning to vote some more, but didn’t have the time, this is your chance!

8Lightnin’ Hopkins – Mojo Hand
The highest rating I have ever given to someone else's item in this project.
Re: Biggest Fan - July 2019
Oh, fasbjd does it again...another solid 9!
Re: Biggest Fan - July 2019
Thelonious Monk- In Walked Bud 5 Somehow I get this less than the experimental Milton Babbit piece on June's Biggest Fan list. I feel no closer to understanding jazz in spite of listening to more modern strains of it by bands like Sons of Kemet/The Comet Is Coming and Ezra Collective.
Lightnin' Hopkins- Mojo Hand 7 Don't yet have a strong feeling for the contents of the song. His playing and technique are impressive though, they keep you riveted.

You are correct. I saw him live at the Lone Star Cafe in NYC in the late 1970s. I was directly in front of him only about 6 feet away. It was mesmerizing watching him play the guitar.mileswide wrote:Lightnin' Hopkins- Mojo Hand 7 Don't yet have a strong feeling for the contents of the song. Not the first song from my home country that appears here (yes, Golden Earring are from the Netherlands), but the first one song in Dutch. It’s famous here, but I guess unfamiliar for most here:
193. Boudewijn de Groot – Als de rook om je hoofd is verdwenen
Year: 1968
Released as a single (b-side to Waterdrager)
Biggest Fan: antonius (#406)

Pretty decent as far as Boudewijn de Groot goes, especially compared to his work after the 60's. Much more memorable than it's A-side.
The biggest thing I miss are some more backing vocals in the chorus, although the bass is doing a good job there. Also, for as far as I know his music, I'd never expected to hear some space rock in his music.

Indeed, the song was actually more popular than the A-side, which made them decide to make Als de rook om je hoofd is verdwenen it's own single in 1970, which truly made it become a hit.BobPatience wrote:193. Boudewijn de Groot – Als de rook om je hoofd is verdwenen - 8

It is indeed a very good song. Boudewijn de Groot is a strange case in the singer-songwriter genre as he clearly sounds typical of it's style but he isn't, actually, the writer of the lyrics. Lennaert Nijgh wrote most of his famous songs, including this one. I like them. They are very poetic, not just in writing style, but in how they evoke a lot emotions without ever seeming to be about something clear. My favorite line translates as: "You carve your name in the bark of a tree/ And nobody ever knows who you are". The music is traditional, but indeed a bit spacey, but well performed. I give it a 8.

They Might Be Giants – Man, It’s So Loud in Here: 4
Don't know the band that well, but it seem they didn't grow old gracefully. Here they are grumpy old man complaining about today's music, although the descriptions seem to fit the eighties more than the zeroes. I thought of them as more lighthearted than this. Ironically, the production sounds dated, although maybe it just isn't my taste.

They Might Be Giants- Man, It's So Loud in Here 3 Not effective for me as a parody or as a piece of music but damn can I not dislodge it from my brain, so maybe it is effective!
Boudewijn de Groot– Als de rook om je hoofd is verdwenen 8 Melody strong enough to break the language barrier, lightly psychedelic pop without holding itself hostage to Swinging London, seems not far away from what Jacques Dutronc was cooking up at the same time in France. Would be up for hearing more in the same vein

Most of his stuff is more folky and less spacey than this song, but it's certainly not bad.
I'd say try these two:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuzURu2pAIk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT1oOQuT8rg
And if you still want more of his from the same era:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1fT0ylPZWI (his only Dutch #1)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kTgg3tQajE (Great B-side of the #1 record)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rb-B5jLAB00 (An early anti-Vietnam war song)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7N7L-XlJO4
And as a bonus:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXyGvM03SWA (A 'The Times They Are a-Changin' cover, but in Dutch)

Some of the links sadly aren't available in my country but that's really kind of you to recommend all these, cheers man! Meester Prikkebeen's the pick of these for me, got that swirling, kaleidescopic sound, the woman's voice nicely complements his as well.
These tracks and the Pornopolka choice earlier this month reinforce my hope to get into more songs in languages I have zero understanding of, I'll make light work of it though if I can find stuff of the same standard as De Groot!
PS Is anyone else getting PHP Warnings at the end of their posts? They've just appeared for me now and I hope it's not permanent/a bug

No need to answer the PS, I've just seen the posts on the Bands poll with everyone having the same problem
