I gotta go back and check everyone else’s songs, but obviously mine are the easiest to come up with snap opinions on. This one is an 8.

201. Aloe Blacc – I Need a Dollar - 8

Imo one of the most underrated songs of the decade, it did well on some charts (#2 UK et al.) but it didn't even make it in the US or Canada and scored low on others e.g. it hit 53 on Dutchcharts Top 100 and didn't make the Dutch Top 40. Good to know that it's at least appreciated by the critics.

I was gonna 'complain' about it only having one vote, but tbh I don't think it'd have made my top 1k if I made one. Still a fantastic effort, I strongly prefer it over 'The Man.'

I considered this one for my top 1000, but it did eventually fell just a little short. A very good song though.

I remember hearing this a lot around back when it was released. I think I somehow convinced myself it was a much older song, and then also forgot about it. Very good to find it again.

Haha, it's great to see that at least someone appreciates them. It does come down to set and setting with these tracks, really. But I'm glad that even Hymie can (kind of) see the appeal. Vril - UV gets an 8/10 from me.

I don't think I have rated Ty Segall Band's I Bought My Eyes yet either, it gets an 8/10 too.

And since it feels strange just chiming in when my own tracks come up, I'm gonna rate some more:

The Magnetic Fields - I Don't Really Love You Any More: 7/10. Pleasing little pop song.

Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar: Wasn't a fan from the beginning anyway, but German radio really has been playing it do death. 4/10

202. The Colourfield - Take - 7

Great British New Wave, the intro sounds like it could've been in a 60s British Beat song in some form, the verses would've done well in Britpop. The percussion in the last third of the song is a nice touch.

You can include me in that, Vril- UV gets a 9 from me, just immense, goosebump-causing stuff. I've been looking at everyone's all-time song lists from last year and yours Krurze is definitely one I'll have to delve into further, especially if the smattering of DnB tracks I know is indication of similar goodness.

Have a Nice Life- Holy Fucking Shit: 40,000 6 Not as abrasive as I was fearing/hoping (must admit Bob's reference to dubstep caught my attention). Agree with Rob about its disjointedness and would've preferred the reverbed vocals to go with the distorted guitars but can't fault its ambition.

The Magnetic Fields- I Don't Really Love You Anymore 5 The echoey drums at the start promise so much, then it gets overbearingly kooky for my liking. Even from hearing the few Magnetic Fields songs on my radar, I know Merritt's done so much better elsewhere.

Stackridge- Humiliation 5 Twee in my view, the vocals don't help.

Neil Young- Peaceful Valley Boulevard 8 How can I vote so much for this ridiculously high voice after the last entry? At his best, Young has more grit in his voice for me or the songs at least provide the grit. When he doesn't, he loses me (I couldn't get past the Silver and Gold album's sentimentality for instance). Environmental catastrophe seems to be happening in the lyrics, while Young and the producer Lanois whip up a brooding hubbub of sound that doesn't reach a peak but such is the atmosphere generated, it doesn't need to.

Aloe Blacc- I Need a Dollar 6 Overfamiliar but nothing inherently wrong with it and he can clearly sing as Wake Me Up showed.

The Colourfield- Take 7 There seemed to be a sub-genre of 80s indie/new wave with sarcastic lyrics set to middle-of-the-road music (Housemartins, some of what Squeeze, Elvis Costello and the Style Council were doing) and I'm partial to much of this style but, as Safetycat says, it probably doesn't reveal all of itself within the first few listens. Terry Hall sounds as stroppy as he did in The Specials but with more soul, maybe finding his voice in a band where he did most of the songwriting.

I kind of announced it already, but let's make it official: I now rate Hedningarna - Pornopolska with a 10. I really don't know how many times I heard it since it first appeared here. Might just end up on Spotify as my most played track of the year!

The funny thing is hearing how many Europeans are calling I Need a Dollar a huge, inescapable hit when I just heard it by chance a few years ago and it never really dented the charts here. Aloe Blacc is much more well-known in the States for his feature on Avicii’s Wake Me Up and, to a degree, The Man. I Need a Dollar was never a hit here, but I wish it was.

Neil Young – Peaceful Valley Boulevard

EDIT: Changed from a 4 to a 7. Original review below.

From one of his "sort-of albums," as I derisively call his 2010s work, the kind of stuff musicians apparently do when their legend is secure and they don't have to try that hard anymore, or even connect with their audience. (Another example is the album he recorded entirely in an ancient Voice-o-Graph booth.) I had once been on a trajectory of listening to all the Neil Young albums -- hell, maybe I'll still do it, if he doesn't live to be 110. Anyway, this song just seems like something that's all been done before, just not on solo electric guitar. I wouldn't recommend any Neil Young from 1995-onward that's not in a loud band setting.

I don't know. You still don't really seem to appreciate the song. That one is a 10. At least.

Seriously, as long as the change is made clear I'll happily update anything.

You're right, such divine perfection is wasted on false acolytes as I. Teach me your ways on how best to praise the true Gods of Sami folk, oh Prophet Rob! Is it too late to repent and score it an 11? Honestly though, I'm grateful for bonnielaurel for choosing this and you for running BF, your reviews are a large part of the appeal :D
