1. Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Even though I have always liked Digital Ash In A Digital Urn more, IWAIM is Bright Eyes more iconic album and the band in general deserves much more attention than they are given. IWAIM is no doubt one of the best acoustic albums of the 2000s and Conor's songwriting really shines through here.

2. Blink 182 - Enema Of The State

I am not a big Blink 182 fan. My favorite type/movement of punk was the skate punk and pre-pop punk from around 1988-1997 with bands like Green Day, The Offspring, Bad Religion, Rancid, Operation IVY, etc... and I have always felt that Blink 182 was one of the main bands that killed that subgenre by popularizing the pop punk and emo of the 2000s. All of that being said, if any album deserves credit from Blink, it is Enema Of The State and as much as I hate to admit it (for personal reasons) Enema Of The State almost singlehandedly flipped the switch and kicked open the door for pop punk and emo bands in the 2000s and also singlehandedly ended the relevance of many 90s punk bands that I hold close to my heart.

All of that being said I still perfer them to The Velvet Underground. I never understood the hype around VU.

3 & 4

I havent listened to the others.

Sharon Van Etten vs. Bright Eyes

Tough. I'm Wide Awake has been a top 10 for me since its release but Are We There is a revelation, one of the many discoveries I've made already on this godsend of a site, it's got that woozy after-hours feel that's hit me on first listen.

In one way, music is the winner when the competition is this good. In a more conclusive way, I'm Wide Awake It's Morning is the winner over Are We There.

My results for the other albums to follow soon, not necessarily as detailed as above...

VU is better than it has any right to be, I Can't Stand It particularly is up there with Heroin & Rock and Roll.

Enema of the State is just as I expected! Bright major key melodies but, as Edre says, there have been many punk bands before and since more worthy of success.

To paraphrase Lou Reed, VU's outtakes are worth more than Enema of the State's diamonds.

More to follow...

Buckingham Nicks has Rumours' DNA throughout (Lola was even apparently one of the three songs spliced to make The Chain), albeit without the same immediacy, not necessarily a bad thing, definitely not with the vocal interplay of Don't Let Me Down Again.

While I'm not fond of Buffy Saint Marie's voice, her original of Cod'Ine on this album is hypnotic, far superior to Gram Parsons' cover, which I'm more familiar with.

Buckingham Nicks just pips it at the expense of It's My Way!

This week was odd - none of the albums are likely to make my all-time list, but I also think they're all good in their own ways. It's My Way was a stand-out this week, I was surprised by how enjoyable I found it on a re-listen.

7. Are We There < 3. I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
8. Enema of the State < 1. VU
5. Buckingham Nicks < 2. It's My Way
6. Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet < 4. Kyoiku

Even Tom Waits can't make Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet enjoyable and he can breathe new life into the likes of Waltzing Matilda or Auld Lang Syne! Interesting more as an experiment for me.

Once you get used to the singer's voice, Kyōiku is an entertainingly arty noise. Don't know if it was my complete unfamiliarity with Japanese but the songs went in directions I couldn't predict, particularly like the clashes between plaintive piano and raucous guitar in Ekimae and Omatsuri Sawagi.

Kyōiku schools Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet.

Wow, Sheena Ringo's voice is exactly what sold me immediately to her work (and this album). Unusual for Japanese music I've heard she seems to be influenced by rock girl from particularly America, at least on the vocal front.

I wasn't throwing shade, honestly! Ringo's voice did start to grow on me and I came to see it as a good fit for the music, apart from on the last track where it felt too exposed for me. On balance, though, it is an album I'll take a lot of enjoyment from listening to again :-)
