Looking back, this did make my top 100 in the 1981 poll. A weakness of how I make my lists for those is that I put in everything, so a lot can be forgotten, like this track. I might rank it lower now. It's got a lot I like, but it is indeed too long and slow.

Hard agree. I haven't been able to get into any of their softer stuff at all, no idea why. This is better than the other two Kinks in the game so far though, kind of reminds me of the Eagles in parts.

Matchbox Twenty – Hand Me Down: 7

There are a lot of these songs around, especially from that time period. Ballads where the singer basically tries to comfort someone with a song that is both quiet yet has some musical power behind it. Although this is not a particularly unique effort I do think it is above average, because everyone basically delivers beyond the basic requirements. The singer manages to sound sincere in a way that is not grating (and therefor actually sincere) and the band plays some tight music that is moving and uplifting without ever drifting into schmaltz. I've heard too much of this stuff that is just unbearably cloying, so I have to applaud this group on a job well done.

The Kinks - Misfits - 3

I am not a huge Kinks fan after the 60s as I feel they became one of the most bland and accessible bands of the 70s and 80s that was able to appeal to aging 60s listeners. In a way they grew older and settled down along with the fans from the 60s. This song isn't interesting and is very generic. It is nothing compared to their 60s material in my opinion.

I might be a sucker for 90s - early 2000s music but this one is like an average song from that era. Considering to me a 6 is just above average, I like the song but it isn't that special. It reminds me of the Collective Soul one earlier but that one is great.

This band holding up for me as an adult is one of the bigger surprises of listening back to stuff that was big when I was growing up. Probably one of the first music videos I remember watching is Unwell from the same album.

She was quite a character in those days (1978) , emigrating from East Germany, singing with that opera voice about the sleaziness of Bahnhof Zoo, feminism, tv addiction, consumerism, religion,...but in a lighthearted way.
This track is a little long, but very funny if you understand German.

I don't know whats going on here. I can't tell if she wants to be punk, disco, or more classic rock. Either way, I don't mind Nina Hagen but don't feel like this song is that focused or pieced together very well. I didn't really like it but it was listenable.

This song is so incredibly 1960's that Quentin Tarantino is probably dying of shame because he forgot to include it on the soundtrack of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Despite being very much of it's time it stands out due to it's layered soundscape and deep atmosphere. Very good.

Matchbox Twenty- Hand Me Down 3 I didn't like it on its own merits while listening. That was before it dawned on me how desperate it seems for some crossover country coin at the same time as it follows the angsty top-40 rock ballad mould of the era set by Lifehouse and The Calling. While I like a genre fusion as much as anyone, this just feels cynical.

Nina Hagen Band- Auf'm Bahnhof Zoo 7 Hagen, on the other hand, seems to march to her own off-kilter beat and that fact plays a large part in her score in contrast to M20's. I particularly liked the disco bits of the song. Despite knowing some German, I wasn't aware of the context of the song; even after finding out the background (Berlin's Zoo train station was known to be seedy at the time apparently), I still found it amusingly bizarre than outright funny.

Rotary Connection- I am the Blackgold of the Sun 9 I'm stunned this didn't get another vote, it's a psychedelic soul classic! Simultaneously rousing and chilled out.

I feel like this was featured in Looney Tunes or Tom and Jerry at some point. It has a nostalgic feeling to it, and I quite like it now too.

For me, I'm happy to vote for classical, since I don't think I'd be able to notice any difference between two performances that would change the ranking that much.

Thanks, I added that version to the playlist. In this case - and with an eye to SafetyCat's comment - I feel that the difference in version is very clear. The earlier one from The Berlin musicians felt much heavier. It's obviously a light piece at heart and you get that from both version, but this Bratislava one really feels like it's flying away on a spring breeze. Very nice! I tend to prefer my classical music more moody, but somehow Strauss tends to push the right buttons for me to also work in the opposite way.

Just in case, to make it clear, my comment was about my own classical ear rather than a generalisation.

Listening to this version, it's clear there are some differences from the one I listened to (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C54NdnmtNFI, which has a faster pace). I definitely think that if a specific performance can be attributed then all the better, but in this case, my score is not changed.

This is a really odd record. It's a remake of this 5 Keys classic, which will also come up here eventually. Only Roy sings "Big fat daddy" rather than "big fat mama."

I mainly ask as the vocal was a lot cleaner than I expected for what the band are trying to make into this rowdy, raucous tune. 50s RnB is to me what soul, a genre I do love and understand on an emotional level (not a technical level though), probably is to a lot of people. Sometimes, only fans of both genres can really tell what makes two similar songs sound distinct and when there's no distinction, the fan will prefer the track with more passion. This is my long-winded way of giving Hard Rockin' Daddy a 5. I think I'll give myself and everyone else a break before I rate Strauss & Sebebu...

What do you give the 5 Keys version that I posted the video for? That's truly 50s R&B. The Roy Nixon is 50s rock and roll. White guys taking an R&B song and converting it to their style, the way the Bill Haley did with several of his hits.

One of the more interesting classical pieces I have seen. I like the different cultural influences throughout the song as well. The composition isn't the craziest but it is nice and different from what I am used too. I like it.

Aster Aweke - My Excuse - 2

I have made this point before, there is a right way to shape a non western language to western music and this unfortunatly isn't one of them. I love when there is a non western language song that manages to shape it's way around western music. This song sounds like a mess in both vocals and instruments.

Roy Nixon and the Down Beats – Hard-Rockin’ Daddy - 6

This song is far from original and sound's like he was hopping on trends. That being said it is still a solid song with a nice sax solo and nice boogie woogie pianos. I have always had a soft spot for 50s music.

The lead vocals on the 5 Keys track are a massive improvement, evocative as they are of a smoky club, and there's some tight close harmonies. I don't feel it really gets going with any urgency until the 'Ride, Jimmy' part though. I'll give the 5K original a 6 and if there were any way to dub their vocals over the Down Beats' instrumental, I'd give that my first 6.5- I can't say fairer than that!
