(Unofficial) Favorite Artists of the 2010s

Posted: Sun Aug 11, 2019 6:05 am
by Edre Depeche Head
THIS WILL BE UNOFFICIAL SINCE THE DECADE AINT OVER

Because I got some criticism for my "Favorite Albums of the 2010s" list since the decade is not over, I figured Artists would make more sense. With the decade 96% complete, I think it is fair to start looking at the best/favorite artists of the decade. The List can include any artist even if they are an old artist as long as they released material in the 2010s. It was a packed decade for sure and it is sad to see it come to a close.

If anyone wants to help me get the averages and stuff PM me.

Lets get this started. There is no deadline yet.

I wouldn't say it was criticism, I know some people were ready to submit their albums of the 2010s. I just felt daunted by thinking of a definitive decade list when I'm still in the mode of compiling my albums and songs choices for this year alone!

You're right though, it's unlikely that many artists will emerge in the last four months of the decade to make us revise our selections. Here's my draft list:

1. Kate Tempest
2. First Aid Kit
3. Laura Marling
4. Foals
5. Little Simz
6. Parquet Courts
7. Interpol
8. Shy FX
9. Dave
10. Pusha T
11. Tracey Thorn
12. Anderson.Paak
13. Kanye West
14. Mbongwana Star
15. Lizzo
16. High Contrast
17. Kendrick Lamar
18. Tame Impala
19. J.Cole
20. Gogol Bordello

Maybe, but because many people are now going to focus on all these releases they haven't heard yet they are very likely to uncover artists they haven't paid attention to before. I think people's artists lists can still easily change.

Don't take it the wrong way, but I'm not particularly fond of the rather quick and random way these major polls are started. To me and I'm sure many others here the decade polls are something special they look out to. I bet a lot of us have ideas about what it should look like and what it should include. That's why there are always discussion topics before starting a bigger poll. Personally, I feel this should be handled in a big way: perhaps a top 1000 songs, top 500 albums and top 100 (or 250) of artists, with a lot of preparation time and maybe some little polls or topics completely dedicated to recommendations of overlooked works. And personally, I don't feel any of this should start before January 1 2020, if for no other reason that keeping up with 2019 is hard enough as it is.

I guess you start out of enthusiasm and there is nothing wrong with that, but I don't see why you are in a rush. A more worked-out poll plan would work best here.

I agree 100% with Rob. For instance, I just discovered Billie Eilish this week. She'll make my list, but it's tough to pinpoint her placement so soon, especially since I haven't heard her earlier work yet.

I think it's fairly likely that an artist I've never heard of now will end up making my list. And it's 100% certain that releases in the last few months of the year will affect placements of artists already on my list. I was wondering which artists would be likely to place the most albums when I do my top 200 albums. The front runners would be (presumably, results may vary when I do the sort)

5 Albums:
Mitski
Kanye West (if we're counting his collaborations on WTT and KSG)
Julia Holter
Sharon Van Etten (if her 2015 EP winds up making it)

4 Albums:
Lady Lamb
Death Grips
Angel Olsen (presuming that I'll adore All Mirrors later this year)

3 Albums:
Julianna Barwick
Kacey Musgraves
Phoebe Bridgers (across all her collaborations)
Grouper
Tyler, the Creator
Kendrick Lamar
Leonard Cohen
Norah Jones
Waxahatchee
Courtney Barnett
St. Vincent
Big Thief
Laura Marling
Taylor Swift

“Wristband” is amazing, not sure why people slept on his last album so much!

Am I the only one who didn’t see these lists as a poll?

It’s too early for a poll but it’s never too early to just ask for people’s favorites so far. Not every topic has to be part of some official forum poll.

That’s certainly how I interpreted this thread and the other thread too. Just as a place for suggestions. I don’t even think the OP even mentioned a poll.

I dunno, even if he’s dead he still put out albums this decade. If Bowie died two days before Blackstar instead of two days after would we have to disqualify that album from these sorts of discussions?

I think it does make a difference if the album release was already planned when alive and perhaps more importantly, that is was recorded in or relatively close to the decade we are talking about. Johnny Cash died in 2003, not two days before the 2010's.

The List can include any artist even if they are an old artist as long as they released material in the 2010s.
The music released in his name in the 2010s was some of.my favourites of the decade. And if archival material is not eligible in its year of release, how would we determine what year it WOULD be eligible?

I may be the only Forumer listing Cash thus decade but I feel fairly certain others will name posthumous/archival material from Prince and Bowie to name a few.

I will abide by the general consensus if It's a "No" though.

I have to say, I agree with your interpretation, Father2theMan, and I think AM itself is in agreement. Sam Cooke died in 1964, but he’s listed as one of the top artists of the 1980s on the strength of a single live album that came out in 1985. If it’s good enough for AM, it’s good enough for me.

Personally, I see this as a decision that should lie with the voter themselves. To take another Johnny Cash album, American V would be in my best of 2006 albums and would make Cash one of my artists of that year, despite his death 3 years before.

On the other hand, when I submit my all-time songs list, I'll class Gram Parsons' November Nights and Wheel of Fortune as 1966, even though they didn't see a release until 2000, partly because they clearly precede his work with The Byrds and The Burritos, they are a stage before development-wise.

I don't know why I'd opt for release date in one case and recording date in the other but I suspect chronology has something to do with it...

I have no problem with archival releases in these top lists. These are the years they are released in, so that's fair. I'll probably add some archival releases to my lists. The Smile Sessions will be high, but I'll never rank The Beach Boys among my favorite artists of the 2010's for something they did 50 years earlier. Something about that just seems silly to me. Kudos for Jimi Hendrix who died in 1970 and in the almost 50 years since he can be artist of the year every time, because of his endless archival releases. And no, I don't think Sam Cooke should be a top artist of the eighties just because someone else than him decided to release something without his knowing over 20 years later.

Of course, everyone can just make up their own mind; I just don't agree.

I'm of the stance of just letting people include whichever artists they please - the fact that so many people don't consider Cash or the Beach Boys 2010s artists means that in the overall calculations, they won't take spots away from true 2010s artists.

Well it is definitely a grey area but look at it this way. I am not comparing him to Lil Peep but I will use him as an example. Lil Peep's Come Over When Your Sober, Pt. 2 was released practically a whole year after he died and his label is still releasing material even though he is dead. Despite this, this material still counts as it was clearly written and recorded at some point in the 2010s.

On the other hand, Johnny Cash's material wouldn't count (even though it is good) because he has been dead since 2003. Therefore, any material that has surfaced and released in the 2010s would have to be written before 2003 and Cash's parts would have had to be recorded before 2003 and personally I think that is unfair and shouldn't qualify for a best of the 2010s list. When you open the door to that you may as well open it up to centuries dead classical composers and blues musicians whose material may have surfaced this decade.

I am not saying Cash's material isn't good but it really should not qualify.

You can't compare Cash and classical composers. Classical composers didn't record material.

And the way AM is laid out right now is that records and songs are under the year they were released in.

Woody Guthrie is #63 of the 1950s, on the merit of a piece written in 1940 and recorded in the mid 1940s. And there also are the tracks with both post-humous and new contributions like 'Free as a Bird' or 'Louder Than Words'.

With the current dating system I think that we should just accept that artists can surface in decades in which they were either less active or dead.

I don't mean that we should suddenly make Nick Drake's 'River Man' a 2004 release just because it was released as a single then.
But Johnny Cash recorded an album in 2003 and it was release in February 2010, I don't think that it's unreasonable to consider that a proper release. If it was released just 2 months earlier, would it count for a 2000s poll because it was written and recorded in the 2000s? And where should his 2014 album be counted? In the 1980s, when it was recorded?

And on the 'unfair' point, how and to whom is it unfair?

If the person wants to put Johnny Cash on his artists list, then why not? It's not unfair to anyone at all, except for the person voting.

I think of King of the Delta Blues as a 30s album even though it was released in the 60s and Smile as a 60s album even though it was released in the 00s. And Hitchhiker as a 70s album, etc.

To me it’s about the intent of the recording, not about the date that some label decided they could profit from it.

I don't know. If our collective artist list would have a top three consisting of Johnny Cash, The Beach Boys and Jimi Hendrix it would sour things for me. Now this isn't likely to happen, but I think it warrants a discussion.

I don't know. If our collective artist list would have a top three consisting of Johnny Cash, The Beach Boys and Jimi Hendrix it would sour things for me. Now this isn't likely to happen, but I think it warrants a discussion.
Honestly, i'd consider that more representative of the person's taste. While it may not be representative towards the music of the 2010s, if that person chose to list those artists as their top three, i'd say let them. It's not right to place restrictions on someone's musical preferences.

In what way is anything I say restricting anyone's musical preferences? Even if somehow the consensus would be that Johnny Cash should not be on this artist list it doesn't restrict anyone to like him (and I like Cash a lot, including some of his archival output from this decade).

I didn't say you were. I didn't say that no one was restricting the person to like that artist either. I'm saying that by not letting the user put Cash on his list, it's a restrictment of that person's taste by not letting that person put the artist he likes on there. Which I will stand by.

And I certainly can see the concern although I think it unlikely to occur.

I think the big problem with placing archival material any year OTHER than year of release is that artistic intent can be difficult to nail down.

To steal the example of SMiLe, according to various statements from the Beach Boys over the years, it was "supposed" to be released in 1967, in the 70s around the time "Surf's Up" was released, in the 80s and I think it came up in the 90s too.

Also, if the archival material is a compilation of material recorded over several years do we pick according to the year of recording for the largest amount of tracks? Rule it completely ineligible as an album but eligible track by track in the year each tune was recorded? I just think it would make it super complex.

For the record - and I said this already - my concern is just with artists, not their work. Archival releases are difficult to place otherwise. Artists not so much.

It’s not a restriction of the person’s taste, any more than it is to stop them from putting Kendrick Lamar on a “Best 70s artists” list.

Poll eligibility questions are unrelated to validity of a person’s taste.

I will try and come up with someone else to replace Cash. I do understand the argument against him for 2010s.

Ultimately, Edre is running this poll so I will go by the guidelines Edre sets. Honestly, anyone near the bottom is weaker support on my part anyway.

Only the Top 20 are really strongly backed by me mostly because I haven't had THAT much plays of the others' material vs. the plays for someone with the bulk of their output from, say, the 90s or before.
