Your boys have started well on the 1987 poll! Some love especially for Never Let Me Down Again, their best 80s song imo.

Good balance of classic rock and poppier stuff in the top 10 even so. I can't dispute that the first verse is the standout section of Life on Mars? though.
Wezzo wrote: Mon Sep 02, 2019 7:58 am "Enjoy the Silence" is certainly one I've been spending a bit of time with. I checked it out once after the top 1000 last year but I'm getting into it more this go-round. "Wolf Like Me" I hadn't really got into before either, but I'm digging it now.
That's what these polls should be all about, Wolf Like Me's also the best song for me out of the songs in the top 50 that I don't know obsessively

Firstly, I bring the top 70 (with a joint position at #70) artists of the top 200, including those who only got 1 chorus in the main body of the results. Why 70? Because that covers every artist who was represented by 2 choruses apart from two lower-scoring and possibly controversial choices:

a) Pharrell Williams, who is only the list as part of 2 features, 1 of which (Alright by Kendrick Lamar) he is uncredited on most formats, even though his voice is indisputably on the chorus.
b) Janis Joplin/Big Brother and the Holding Company are counted as 1 artist on AM, a viewpoint that doesn't meet with unanimous consensus.

I've also grouped artists with entries for multiple bands and/or their solo careers in square parentheses just for fun, I hope it doesn't make the list too cumbersome (I'll take them out if it does).

Rank. Artist - Number of choruses (Highest ranked chorus): Points

Re: Best Ever Choruses Poll 2019- RESULTS

Post by mileswide »

Now, we can see that Oasis rule the chorus roost for points and overall popularity (though spare a thought for Bowie and the Beatles who had more songs in the top 200 with 5 and 6 respectively but had to make do with 4th and 5th place on both above charts).

But, to test acroamor's original hypothesis, are they the act that most outperforms their respective AM rank? Let's find out in the comparison of the initial top 70 artists for choruses, including only those that see an improvement of over 400 upon their AM standing:

1. Kacey Musgraves +2311 (AM rank 2365)
2. 4 Non Blondes +1998 (AM rank 2051)
3. Jimmy Eat World +1672 (AM rank 1683)
4. CeeLo Green +1342 (AM rank 1345)
5. Pusha T +894 (AM rank 957)
6. Toto +851 (AM rank 929)
7. Bobby Womack +888 (AM rank 937)
8. Mitski +811 (AM rank 826)
9. No Doubt +760 (AM rank 817)
10. The Offspring +559 (AM rank 620)
11. Carly Rae Jepsen +555 (AM rank 582)
12. Alicia Keys +555 (AM rank 591)
13. Britney Spears +527 (AM rank 574)
14. Meat Loaf +477 (AM rank 500)
15. The Monkees +468 (AM rank 526)
16. Tears for Fears +445 (AM rank 459)
17. System of a Down +426 (AM rank 454)
18. Gnarls Barkley +419 (AM rank 448)
19. Feist +408 (AM rank 442)
20. The Mamas and the Papas +422 (AM rank 465)

To be noted is that Carly Rae Jepsen is the highest act with multiple songs in the top 200 included in this 'unacclaimed' chart. Some of these increases are skewed by the status of the site update, which is yet to include the simultaneously most recent and most acclaimed releases of Jepsen but also of Mitski and Pusha T (respectively the albums Dedicated, Be The Cowby and Daytona, not to mention Push's non-album single The Story of Adidon).

With those anomalies accounted for, it is perhaps not astounding that 4 Non Blondes have seen the biggest jump in contrast to their AM rank, given that What's Up has a truly catchy chorus but marks the band as one-hit wonders and not especially critically feted ones at that. CeeLo Green may start directing his biggest solo single at AM, though, since he appears above on his own and as part of Gnarls Barkley, probably as a consequence as having both careers overshadowed by his two songs included in the top 200.

What happens if we include only the multiple-entry 'improvers'?

1. Carly Rae Jepsen +555 (AM rank 582)
2. The Monkees +468 (AM rank 526)
3. The Killers +342 (AM rank 344)
4. Lorde +198 (AM rank 268)
5. ABBA +194 (AM rank 201)
6. Weezer +93 (AM rank 158)
7. Pulp +91 (AM rank 109)
8. Oasis +56 (AM rank 57)
9. OutKast +30 (AM rank 76)
10. The Smiths +21 (AM rank 24)
11. Arcade Fire +20 (AM rank 32)
12. Leonard Cohen +15 (AM rank 54)
13. Talking Heads +9 (AM rank 30)
14. Prince +6 (AM rank 10)
15. Nirvana +2 (AM rank 21)

I don't think anyone could have expected The Monkees to have overperformed in this way. That aside, Oasis attaining the 8th biggest increase on the AM placing is still impressive and, if we are to order the chorus poll artists by entries on the top 200 against their respective AM rank, only the Killers can better Oasis.

You could still make a case for Oasis though. I'm not sure what the raw point totals are on the AM artists list, but I would guess that if you scaled those points to equate to the points you assigned here and then calculated the difference between the two, Oasis would come out on top.

I'd bet that at least The Killers would be above them. Considering they're a good second to Oasis in this poll but have a much lower AM rank (57 vs. 344)

Oh yeah, you're right. Since they ranked one spot behind Oasis on that list and Outkast (76th) ranked one spot behind them on the other list, I had it in my head that The Killers were 76th. But if I thought about that for one second I would have known better. And it's still possible The Killers would have been ahead anyway. So congrats to The Killers! You win

This section covers the voters- firstly showing which voters shared the most and least entries on the top 200 both in real terms and as a percentage of their total ballot:

Voter (Number of choruses): Voter with most shared entries - Number of entries on top 200 (Percentage of total ballot)/Voter with least shared entries - Number of entries on top 200 (Percentage of total ballot)

StevieFan13 (200): Most shared andyd1010 - 37 (18.5%)/Least shared BobPatience - 4 (2%)
Nick (50): Most shared StevieFan13 - 25 (50%)/Least shared BobPatience - 1 (2%)
mileswide (150): Most shared StevieFan13 - 11 (7.3%)/Least shared BobPatience - 2 (1.3%)
BobPatience (51): Most shared acroamor - 5 (9.8%)/Least shared Edre Peraza - 0 (0%)
Edre Peraza (50): Most shared Emerald & StevieFan13 - 4 (8%)/Least shared BobPatience - 0 (0%)
andyd1010 (200): Most shared StevieFan13 - 37 (18.5%)/Least shared BobPatience & Edre Peraza - 3 (1.5%)
Honorio (100): Most shared Jackson - 18 (18%)/Least shared BobPatience & Edre Peraza - 3 (3%)
FrankLotion (200): Most shared StevieFan13 - 29 (14.5%)/Least shared Edre Peraza - 2 (1%)
acroamor (80): Most shared andyd1010 - 17 (21.2%)/Least shared Edre Peraza - 1 (1.3%)
Emerald (111): Most shared StevieFan13 - 20 (18.01%)/Least shared BobPatience - 2 (1.8%)
Wezzo (200): Most shared StevieFan13 - 19 (9.5%)/Least shared Edre Peraza & BobPatience - 1 (0.5%)
Jackson (200): Most shared StevieFan13 - 22 (11%)/Least shared Edre Peraza - 2 (1%)

Now we look at how many of each voters' choruses made the top 200 in real terms and as a percentage of their ballots:

Nick 43/50 (86%)
acroamor 49/80 (61.2%)
Honorio 50/100 (50%)
Emerald 55/111 (49.6%)
StevieFan13 94/200 (47%)
FrankLotion 70/200 (35%)
andyd1010 68/200 (34%)
Jackson 62/200 (31%)

I didn't really pay attention to which of my votes ended up in the list, but this honestly is a higher score than I

Also you missed a '13' in StevieFan13's name on the last line of the first list.

And not that it matters a lot, but wouldn't it make more sense to show the percentages as percentages of Top 200 entries, instead of total entries? Considering you are comparing just entries on the Top 200, and not all songs from the ballots. E.g. StevieFan13 shares 37/94 of their entries with andyd1010, and not 37/200. With the current way, the highest percentage that could be displayed would be the percentage of ballot entries that made the top 200 (basically the percentages in the second list).

Good point, well made there Bob (and I've sneakily added a 13 onto the last mention of StevieFan, so thanks for that as well). I'll submit the shared choruses as a percentage of each voters' top 200 total yield below.

As a side point, I've not seen you on Biggest Fan for a while, what gives? You posted some cogent opinions and top Dutch tunes on there!

Right, last chart for now- I'd have liked to have done a breakdown of the top 200 by year and decade but my internet's not reliable at the moment to allow me to check I've got the right year for each entry...

Voter (Number of choruses on top 200): Voter with most shared entries - Number of shared entries on top 200 (Percentage of total number of top 200 entries)/Voter with least shared entries - Number of shared entries on top 200 (Percentage of total number of top 200 entries)

StevieFan13 (94): Most shared andyd1010 - 37 (39.4%)/Least shared BobPatience - 4 (4.3%)

Nick (43): Most shared StevieFan13 - 25 (58.1%)/Least shared BobPatience - 1 (2.3%)

mileswide (33): Most shared StevieFan13 - 11 (33.3%)/Least shared BobPatience - 2 (6.1%)

BobPatience (14): Most shared acroamor - 5 (35.7%)/Least shared Edre Peraza - 0 (0%)

Edre Peraza (15): Most shared Emerald & StevieFan13 - 4 (26.7%)/Least shared BobPatience - 0 (0%)

andyd1010 (68): Most shared StevieFan13 - 37 (54.4%)/Least shared BobPatience & Edre Peraza - 3 (4.4%)

Honorio (50): Most shared Jackson - 18 (36%)/Least shared BobPatience & Edre Peraza - 3 (6%)

FrankLotion (70): Most shared StevieFan13 - 29 (41.4%)/Least shared Edre Peraza - 2 (2.9%)

acroamor (49): Most shared andyd1010 - 17 (34.7%)/Least shared Edre Peraza - 1 (2.04%)

Emerald (55): Most shared StevieFan13 - 20 (36.4%)/Least shared BobPatience - 2 (3.6%)

Wezzo (44): Most shared StevieFan13 - 19 (43.2%)/Least shared Edre Peraza & BobPatience - 1 (2.3%)

Jackson (62): Most shared StevieFan13 - 22 (35.5%)/Least shared Edre Peraza - 2 (3.2%)

I can always go back and interpret the data in another way on request, just not today... anyone is free to represent the data as they like as well! Otherwise, thank you everyone for taking part- this poll's drummed it into me to be more patient, less rushed and to listen to more Fiona Apple, Algiers, St. Vincent, Bet The Levels among many others!
