Alice Coltrane – Blue Nile: 9
Pure magic. I don't think I heard the harp in a jazz song before, certainly not as the main instrument. Feels like a journey through another world. One of the best discoveries yet and a good reason to check out more Alice Coltrane.

Ultramagnetic MC’s - Travelling at the Speed of Thought (Hip House Club Mix) 5 Drowned out by Lyn Collins' "Yeah! WOO" (the Wilhelm Scream of samples), not used particularly imaginatively here.

High on Fire - Hung, Drawn & Quartered 6 Production-wise, it sounds like their budget was just a notch up from a rubber band and a lunchbox but the group build tension well and complement the singer, who comes off like Lemmy with a hangover but in a good way.

The Velvet Underground - New Age 5 To chime with other comments above, Doug Yule's voice may not be the most expressive. That works to his advantage elsewhere on Loaded, however, for the sullen Who Loves the Sun
and more so for Oh! Sweet Nuthin', which gets its numbness in regaling its bleak subject matter from Yule's weary tones. It doesn't suit New Age, relying as it does on someone with a vocal range or at least charisma to carry the song through the change in dynamics.

Daniel Caesar feat. Kali Uchis - Get You 6 Doesn't suffer from the same technical difficulties as any of the three above tracks but maybe a little too slick. And it doesn't have that same knowing nod of, say, Childish Gambino's Redbone to the idea that this loverman schtick might just be slightly ridiculous outside the bedroom.

Alice Coltrane - Blue Nile 8 Sped up a touch and you've got yourself the theme for a car chase in a Blaxploitation film, which earns a decent score from me on its own. The harp notes, draped all over the drumbeats in the lushest way, seal its quality.
All I got inside is vacancy!

All of the youtube versions that show up when I google have terrible audio... use this version if you don't Spotify https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwgXZGq3TSU

I give it an 8. Maybe not the most interesting song of it's genre but one of the first I heard and it stuck with me.

It's easy to like, but like Take Me Down a few weeks ago it is too unoriginal to stand out the grand scheme of music.

Anita Baker – You Bring Me Joy: 3
When we came across Sarah McLaghlan's Adia in August I asked whether a song could be too classy for its own good. The question came to back to me when You Bring Me Joy started. It's just a little too clean for me, whereas the title suggested something more giddy or - you know - joyful. And then the second part hit and we suddenly went straight into the belting/ yelling match that Céline Dion would eventually built a complete career around and which I'll never be able to stomach. Not my cup of tea at all, this song.

I'm with you for a change. Mellow lifeless arrangements with way over the top vocal histrionics. I think that shit started with Patti Labelle in the 70s.

Santana is a master and I tend to like his instrumentals. This is not his best, but certainly very good.

Richard O’Brien – Science Fiction/Double Feature: 6
Kind of fun, but I think a better singer could have made more of it. Curiously, I still have never seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

252. Ultramagnetic MC’s – Travelling at the Speed of Thought (Hip House Club Mix)
Year: 1989
3-Besides this version, there was another on Spotify simply labeled as "Remix" that was a more spare, skeletal mix. It felt funkier than this one with James Brown shouts and turntablism dripping on top. Sometimes less is more...
253. High on Fire – Hung, Drawn & Quartered
Year: 2002
Album: Surrounded by Thieves
1-Make...it....stop
254. The Velvet Underground – New Age
Year: 1970
Album: Loaded
5-Could grow on me with more plays maybe. Added to my 1970 sampling playlist.
255. Daniel Ceasar, featuring Kali Uchis – Get You
Year: 2017
6-Nice smooth R&B. I think the bits with Uchis are where the song picks up steam. Added to my 2017 sampling playlist.
256. Alice Coltrane – Blue Nile
Year: 1970
3-A lot of what keeps me from being more into jazz is this type of mellow meandering where it's all about "mood" and "texture" but never gets to a solid melody that punctures my eardrum and won't let go.
257. Fur Patrol - Andrew
Year: 2000
5-Kind of like it, could be a grower, added to my 2000 sampling playlist.

Nightwish – Cadence of Her Last Breath - 6

Difficult to rate, like a lot of symphonic metal. There is something that appeals me in this genre, especially when women take on the vocals (and symphonic metal is the only kind of metal were women seem to be more readily accepted). The singer here delivers, the "Run away!" vocal part works well, the overall song is memorable, but somehow it never soars as much as I wanted. The reason why a lot of these songs after some initial appeal fail to really win me over is that they can seem a bit facile after a few plays, as if there isn't all that much to return to. Within Temptation does this kind of thing better than Nightwish anyway.

253. High on Fire – Hung, Drawn & Quartered
3
254. The Velvet Underground – New Age
6

6

4
259. Anita Baker – You Bring Me Joy
7
260. Santana – Waves Within
5
261. Richard O’Brien – Science Fiction/Double Feature
9 - A very subdued opening considering the movie, but it works to get your head in the right space, with all of the grand lyrics about famous horror films. One of the songs I can return to most easily from the film. The reprise at the end of the film is also excellent.
262. Prince - Shhh
4
263. Nightwish – Cadence of Her Last Breath
7 - I like Nightwish but their music does get very samey. I feel like I could give half of their songs this score because they all do the same thing for me.

Fur Patrol - Andrew 7 Parts of it sound like they forgot to add a backing track, leaving the singer to carry the song and it's solely to her credit that it ends up being catchy.

Count to Infinity - Nightfall 5 Passing any further comment on this one.

Anita Baker - You Bring Me Joy 2 Baker drops the title in the intro over the default setting of a session musician's Casio, giving herself a challenge to create drama. She takes that challenge by reaching notes I never could, nor would want to. Rapture and Sweet Love were palpably the sounds of a woman falling in love even if I didn't like either tune. What I heard in YBMJ sounded closer to terror than joy.

Santana - Waves Within 9 Stunned me, particularly the spacey filter at the start. It's the aural equivalent of the album's cover, a trip through the desert with an ever-growing sun. Bring on more Santana if this is what to expect!

Richard O’Brien – Science Fiction/Double Feature 4 Gave promises it couldn't keep of a camper Life on Mars? at the beginning, not helped by the adenoidal vocals. But I'll keep it at this score as it's intentionally tongue-in-cheek.

Prince - Shh 3 Someone really should've told Prince that those crashing drums and cheap keyboard sounds do nothing to keep the seductive mood he was going for.

Nightwish - Cadence of Her Breath 6 Guiltily dig the instrumentation here, which strike my untutored ears as a heavier Evanescence playing Hysteria by Muse, but I wish the singer would ditch her own plummy cadence and put in a raw vocal to push the song into epic territory.
All I got inside is vacancy!

250. John Parr – St. Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion)
Too much cheezy. 3.5/10

251. The Nits - Nescio
A little lack a variety in this song 5/10

252. Ultramagnetic MC’s – Travelling at the Speed of Thought (Hip House Club Mix)
I think I prefer this old rap to recent productions... but it's still not a thing for me 4.5/10

253. High on Fire – Hung, Drawn & Quartered
I still have a lot of trouble judging this kind of music 4/10

254. The Velvet Underground – New Age
I love it! I love it! I didn't remember that song at all. 8/10

255. Daniel Ceasar, featuring Kali Uchis – Get You
Rather sympathetic, with a soft languor 6.5/10

256. Alice Coltrane – Blue Nile
difficult to say bad things... a unique mood. 7/10

257. Fur Patrol - Andrew
I don't know if I like it or not, it deserves a 5. 5/10

258. Count to Infinity - Nightfall
6/10

259. Anita Baker – You Bring Me Joy
It's too dripping for me. 3.5/10

260. Santana – Waves Within
A forgotten classic, the Santana of that time is always pleasant. 6.5/10

261. Richard O’Brien – Science Fiction/Double Feature
Hey, that's really nice. I had clearly never heard it before. The voice is the most important thing here. The "Whouhouhouhouuu" are even painful. 7/10

262. Prince - Shhh
Prince's ballads are clearly not my favorite songs, and this one from an album I don't really like. 5.5/10

263. Nightwish – Cadence of Her Last Breath
I still can't do it. 4/10
