Big Star - You Can't Have Me
7
Not a regular contributor to this but had to rate a track from my favorite album of all time - one of my least favorite out of the core fifteen or so songs on Third but still better than most bands could put out

Big Star - You Can't Have Me: 6
I never understood what makes this band so special to many people and this is no exception. Still, I like the drums on this one a lot, which helps.

The Pretty Reckless – Take Me Down: 6
A bit like Garbage (the band, not the trash). It builds up to something great, but the chorus is too derivative of thousands of other songs to really make a deep impression.

Me either. The Box Tops are EASILY the best band that Alex Chilton was in.

238. Chuck Person – A3: 4 - I have no idea what vapourwave is about. but this is rather below average.
239. King Tuff – Loser’s Wall: 5
240. Big Star – You Can’t Have Me: 5
241. The Pretty Reckless – Take Me Down: 6
242. Belle and Sebastian – I Want the World to Stop - excellent song, I always had my reservations about Stuart Murdoch's voice, but in this mix, it's rather set back and I love the song for it. 8/10

Belle and Sebastian – I Want the World to Stop: 7

Never listened to this one before, or anything so back in the career of these guys, but this is a very appealing song. I feel that the band is less wordy here than they were before, which is a shame as I think some poetry is lost. That along with the hooky melody makes this a very poppy song, but at least it is a good one.

I think it’s been a long time since we had a song with over 100.000.000 streams on Spotify, but here is one. The second Disney song in this poll:

243. Phil Collins – You’ll Be In My Heart
Year: 1999
Album: Tarzan (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Biggest Fan: kaue (#263)

236. Happy Mondays – Hallelujah (Paul Oakenfold - Club Mix)
Not my thing at all. 3/10

237. Laura Nyro – Gibsom Street
The voice sounds very aggressive to my ears but I still like the whole thing. A ballad at the piano is always welcome. 5,5/10

238. Chuck Person – A3
Uhuuuuuuu... are you sure this is the right song in the playlist? 2/10

239. King Tuff – Loser’s Wall
An all time favourite, don't ask why, I don't know. 10/10

240. Big Star – You Can’t Have Me
I've always been perplexed about BigStar. I like their songs and albums, but I don't understand their status as a cult band. 7/10

241. The Pretty Reckless – Take Me Down
The voice is great. The little Hammond organ make the job. Maybe a little too "American teenager" for me. 5,5/10

242. Belle and Sebastian – I Want the World to Stop
This group knows how to create superb ballads... here is more proof. 8/10

243. Phil Collins – You’ll Be In My Heart
It's so cheezy that I don't even know how to rate it! Pffff... 3,5/10

235. George Thorogood and the Destroyers – Bad to the Bone - 8
236. Happy Mondays – Hallelujah - 10 (I love the groove of the whole thing, the Manchester swagger, and the monks!)
237. Laura Nyro – Gibsom Street - 5.5
238. Chuck Person – A3 - 2.5 ( The 8 second phrase is quite okay, but repeated constantly... no. Then halfway through a new (not so good) phrase is used, and, oh...)

240. Big Star – You Can’t Have Me - 4
241. The Pretty Reckless – Take Me Down - 8 (Never heard of this or them, but it's fab)

243. Phil Collins – You’ll Be In My Heart - 2 (I normally try and defend Phil Collins when people slag him off, but this really doesn't help his case!)

Phil Collins – You’ll Be In My Heart: 5
I'm probably somewhat milder than I normally would be for something like this, because I have the origin of the song vivid in mind. This song was written for the movie Tarzan and belongs to a song in which grieving mother dotes on her newfound song. It fits, but on it's own it is a lot harder too swallow, because there his hardly a schmaltzier song in the Disney canon.

Billie Holiday – Don’t Explain: 8
Very powerful. I think the violins are tasteful and not even that prominent in the 'mix'. They support Holiday very well and make it another strong showcase for her. Maybe singing-wise the best I have heard of her yet.

What a great week!

239. King Tuff – Loser’s Wall - 6
Good but never does anything interesting for me

240. Big Star – You Can’t Have Me - 7
A good band and a good song

241. The Pretty Reckless – Take Me Down - 7
Looked up the band and turns out the lead singer was the little girl in that terrible Grinch movie... good career move switching to music.

242. Belle and Sebastian – I Want the World to Stop - 8
Ok I really need to do a dive into this band, this is superb.

243. Phil Collins – You’ll Be In My Heart - 5
I know that this movie is mostly remembered for the Phil Collins soundtrack... but I assume it's for Two Worlds and Son of Man, which are both solid tracks. This is fine but not on the same level.

244. Billie Holiday – Don’t Explain - 7
Just stunning.

The Guess Who – No Time: 7

I only knew American Woman by them, but even then I probably wouldn't be able to name the band behind it. But this is a very solid classic rock song, with a great second half.

Chuck Pearson - A3 2 One of a kind (hopefully), gains an extra point for the 2nd half improving on Ian Van Dahl's original by default!

King Tuff - Loser's Wall 4 Should have taken notes from Bohemian Like You, a fellow Jumping Jack Flash rip-off, by adding pace and not having a singer who sounds like he's being strangled.

Big Star - You Can't Have Me 8 More experimental than I expected from Big Star, the free-jazz sax and synth bassline come across like visitors from another song but make it all the livelier for not fully fitting in with the other aspects of the tracks.

The Pretty Reckless - Take Me Down 6 The singer and her hickory-smoked vocals deserve a song, be it rock or country, where you can't predict every rhyme on first listen. Not even her passion can make the lyrics or the dynamics of the track interesting. My six points are genuinely all for her voice.

Belle and Sebastian - I Want the World to Stop 5 Over 20 years in the game has added welcome grit to Stuart Murdoch's usually cloying voice. The Motown leanings of the rhythm section on this tune don't do enough to inject some oomph, however.

Phil Collins - You'll Be in My Heart 2 A very listenable start driven by drama-anticipating synth strings and subtle splashes of 'tribal' drums is scotched by the most artificial-sounding crescendo of acoustic guitars you'll hear; the song then gets progressively worse long before it limps to its rote chorus.

Billie Holiday - Don't Explain 6 Clearly a work of quality but just doesn't affect me deeply.

The Guess Who - No Time 7 The opening riff makes you swear you're listening to some forgotten British Invasion classic and the ending is an appealing psych-out, the main bulk of the song is begging me to give it more perseverance to get the most out of it, though.

I think my #1358 is still a 9. Either that or a high 8.
I'm a bit more constrained with my 8-10 ratings:

My 10's only go down to my 128th favorite.
My 9's end at my 350th favorite.
My 8's end at my 660th favorite.

Bruce Springsteen - Where the Bands Are 6 It staggers out the gate from the outset with Springsteen sounding like he's trying to recontextualise his voice in an era of Boss-fans Joe Strummer and Elvis Costello, then hurtles along in a pleasingly ramshackle way until the chorus where it becomes clear that the song could still do with some work. It never really recovers for me after that and, while it could've been a contender with some tweaking, the track in its completed guise justifies its outtake status unfortunately.

I was going to say the same thing. The Boss is one of those artists that can pretty much do no wrong for me, but after indeed a strong start it just doesn't develop quite into something essential. Just another Springsteen song. The River already has songs like this and this one as is wouldn't have added anything to what is already a double album. He covered this ground better on other songs.

I was coming to it from the opposite direction- never being into Springsteen myself, the track was surpassing my expectations but having it all build up to such a one-note chorus made the whole thing fall flat. Oh well, his best example of him reclaiming his own voice from Costello remains his version of Santa Claus Is Coming to Town for me!

Didn't mean to suggest SCICTT was his best song! Just the one where he most clearly seems to highlight his vocal influence on Elvis Costello. No one I've mentioned it to agrees they sound at all alike though.

I'd say his best is either Atlantic City or The River itself, both really acutely observed portrayals of working-class desperation; the latter probably clinches it with the pained "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true or is it something worse?"

I have to disagree too, Springsteen and Costello don't sound alike to me at all. If for no other reason that Costello seems to thrive on a deadpan, sarcastic delivery - two elements foreign to Springsteen, who sounds loud and larger than life to me - two elements foreign to Costello.

246. Bruce Springsteen – Where the Bands Are - 7
It may be standard fare for Bruce, but it's still pretty good. Agreed on the weak chorus though.

247. Cold Chisel – Forever Now - 9
My debut!
One thing I like in a song is when they have a solo guitar rift with maybe some tasteful drums behind it, like they do here, and in many other Aussie/Kiwi pub rock songs. Here it's paired with Jimmy Barnes's rough, earnest vocals and a boppin chorus. Just some great stuff.

Cold Chisel – Forever Now: 7
Very eighties, but the schmaltz that is just waiting around the corner is held at bay by a tasteful restraint in the instrumentals and by a vocalist who equally knows how to keep things from going too far.

Emmy the Great - MIA: 7

Here is a line I don't use much to review a song, but it is inevitable here: "This song is damn cute." Cuteness tend to put me off more than not, but here it feels just right. Not an amazing song from an objective point of view, but this voice gives me butterflies in my stomach and the melody is appealing.
